Portfolio Requirements
Welcome to the FIT Jewelry Design Portfolio. This portfolio submission consists of five parts: a Design Test, a Portfolio of Original Artwork, Written Essays, Additional Essays for One Year Full-Time AAS Degree Program Applicants only, and a Portfolio Cover Page. We want to understand your creative process in both written and visual components. We ask that you put thought into your process and work to create original creative art that reflects your unique self-expression and special quirks. We want to see who you are in your design process. The mission of the Jewelry Design program is to provide students with the history, skill sets, and vocabulary of the jewelry world in preparation for entry level positions in the jewelry industry including, but not limited to, assistant designers, bench workers, production and quality-control managers, sales executives, jewelry trend forecasters, gemstone and jewelry sources, and instructors.

PART ONE: Design Test

The Design Test is a very important part of the total ePortfolio evaluation. We request that you put thought and effort into the concept, design, and execution of these projects. You are to create new projects for this test. Do not submit work done for other purposes. Because this is a test, we are unable to provide you with any additional information on how to execute the projects beyond what you receive here. Carefully follow instructions for each project. PROJECT ONE: Sketching Test FOR THE SKETCHING TEST: Take a basic geometric form or any combination of forms (i.e. squares, triangles, circles, rectangles, etc.), and create a necklace, earring, and brooch to actual scale (1 = 1). NOTE: The sketches you draw must be the actual size of the item, should they ever be realized in 3 dimensions. MEDIA: Ink or Pencil. Submit 3 images. Note: For ePortfolio, take color copies of your three sketches. The images must be properly oriented (i.e. not upside down or sideways). The images should be saved as JPEGs and re-sized to approximately 12 inches in the longest direction at 72 dpi (or 900 pixels). See How To Submit Your ePortfolio: General Instructions. Name your files as follows: yourlastname_sketching_01.jpg, yourlastname_sketching_02.jpg, yourlastname_skeching_03.jpg. Your file name should use all lowercase extensions. Also, when uploading your image(s) in step 2, use the File Description text box on the image upload page to enter the description for each of these files as Sketching Test. Include media and size of piece. For Mail In review, send color copies/digital photos/printouts of your original work on paper reduced to 8 inches x 11 inches. Do not mail your original work or actual jewelry items they will not be returned. Label each piece Sketching Test, on the back of each page. Include media and size of piece. For In Person, bring the original drawings to the interview and be prepared to discuss what inspired you to compose these pieces. PROJECT TWO: Inspiration Test FOR THE INSPIRATION TEST: Choose an icon: it can be a living or historic person; a historical or contemporary event, or a movement or cause that is political or social. Design a piece of wearable jewelry that represents the person, place, or event. Please submit an image of your initial sketch for the design as well as a final rendition. Please note the name of your selected icon on your inspiration sketch.
