Graph 5
The graph compares unemployment rates in the US and France between 1997 and 2003. The horizontal axis shows time over the six-year period. The vertical axis shows the percentage of unemployed workers. The solid line shows the unemployment rate in the US while the broken line shows that of France.

Graph 5
Generally speaking, there has been a downward trend in unemployment in the US while France has experienced an upward trend in unemployment. Between 1997 and 1998, the unemployment rate for the US decreased significantly, from 8% to 6%. During the same period, unemployment in France climbed steadily from 4% to 6%.

Graph 5
From the end of 1998, the unemployment rate for the US decreased further to 5% in mid 1999 and held steady for 2 years. During the same period, the unemployment rate in France increased further to reach a peak of 7.5% in the middle of 1999. Between 1999 and 2000, there was a downward trend as unemployment rate in France dipped to 6%.

Graph 5

In the US, however, the picture was rosier. Although there was a slight increase of 1% in unemployment between the middle of 2001 and 2002, the trend has been a downward one since mid 2002.

Graph 5
In short, unemployment rates in the US is decreasing steadily while that for France shows a steady increase. There has only been one point where the two rates meet, which was at the end of 1998 where the two lines intersected at 6%. The overall trends in unemployment in the US and France shows that the economy in the US is doing much better than in France.
