Digging Deeper With Poetry

Name: ________________________ *Final Poetry Assignment* Due Date: ____________________________ For this assignment, you will analyze the sound, language, and theme of a poem of your choice. Step 1: Choose a poem! You may use a poem we have studied in class, or you can use another poem of your choosing. Its up to you! The poem should be at least 10 lines. Step 2: Annotate the poem. Mark up the poem to show rhyme scheme, sound devices, and figurative language. (Think about all the samples we have done in class.) Make a key to show what your markings mean. (e.g., underline = allusions, circle = imagery, IM = implied metaphor) Step 3: Write a poem analysis. You will write 3 paragraphs analyzing the poem. Paragraph 1: Rhyme scheme and sound o What is the rhyme scheme of the poem? o What sound techniques are in the poem? (e.g., alliteration, internal rhyme, onomatopoeia) o Prove it! If the rhyme scheme is ABAB, give a 4-line example to show this; if you say there is internal rhyme, use a quote from the poem to show this. Paragraph 2: Figurative language o What figurative language can you find in the poem? (e.g., simile, implied metaphor, imagery) o Prove it! Be sure to give examples. o What purpose does using such language have? How does it help you understand the topic or theme differently? Paragraph 3: Theme o What is the message of the poem? o Prove it! What words, phrases, or lines tell you that is the message? Extra Credit: You may sign up to perform your poem in front of the class. To receive credit, you must memorize your poem! **This assignment must be typed Times New Roman font, size 12.**
