Learning Experiences

A. Preparatory Activities 1. Mental Computation: Solving for Areas of Squares/ Triangles a. The leader will draw the name of contestants in the bowl. b. Give each group a set of number and label cards. 0 cm2 1 2 dm2 3 4 m2 5 6 7 8 9

c. Teacher reads a word problem on area, 1. What is the area of a glass top that will fit a square table whose edge is 30 cm? 2. A triangular cardboard has a base 20 cm and a height of 15 cm. How big is it? 3. A triangle that is 24 cm as its base and 18 cm high. Find the area. d. Each group forms the correct answer (with label) in front, using their number and label cards. e. The first group to form the correct answer gets 1 point.

f. The first group with the most number of points wins. 2. Review Identifying the Spatial Figure a. Teacher shows pictures of Pyramids of Egypt. b. Teacher asks what spatial figure was seen in the pictures, SQUARE PYRAMID c. The teacher calls on the pupils to describe the spatial figure. 3. Motivation a. Show a square pyramid (Pupils handle a square pyramid)

What is the shape of the base of the pyramid? How many lateral faces does it have? What is the shape of each face? What can you say about the lateral faces? Why did you say that they are a congruent? How do you find the area of the triangle? How about the square? B. Developmental Activities 1. Presentation Read and analyze the problem. A square pyramid has a base of 12 cm and a slant height of 15 cm. What is the surface area of the pyramid?

a. Let the pupils point to the class which is the base of the pyramid, the height and the side/edge of the square base.

b. Abstraction and Organization What kind of pyramid is mentioned in the problem? What is asked in the problem? How can we get the surface area of a pyramid?
2. Representing the problem into modeling

a. Show a square pyramid and its net Since we are asked to get the surface area we will get the area of its faces. How many faces that it have? What kind of plane figure has each face? What can you say about the faces of the pyramid? What is the shape of its base? How do we find the area of triangles/squares?

A
D

This is a net of a square pyramid Lets name each face as A, B, C, D and E.

Face A B C D E

Formula bxh 2 bxh 2 bxh 2 bxh 2 bxh 2

Finding Area 12 x 12 (12 x 15) + 2 (12 x 15) + 2 (12 x 15) + 2 (12 x 15) + 2

Area 144 cm2 90 cm2 90 cm2 90 cm2 90 cm2

How can you find the area of the square base? (sxs)

How about the area of each triangular face? (bxh) 2 Since the 4 lateral face are congruent, what will you do? 4(bxh) 2 What will you do with areas of each face to get the surface area of the pyramid? 504 cm2 So, what do you mean by surface area? Therefore, what is the formula to find the square area of a square pyramid? Surface Area of a Square Pyramid (SA) = sxs + 4 (bxh) 2 Solution: Surface Area of a Square Pyramid (SA) = Area of the base = sxs = 12x12 = 144cm2 Area of the lateral faces= 4 (bxh) 2 = 4(12x15) 2 = 4 (180) 2 = 4(90) = 360 cm2

SA = 144 cm2 + 360 cm2 = 504 cm2 3. Practice Solve for the answers. 1. Kim would like to make a model of a square pyramid whose base is 10 cm and 8 cm high. What is the least amount of cardboard needed for a model? 2. SA = ?, If b = 15 dm h = 9 dm 3. 18 cm

10 cm

4. Generalization What is surface area? Sum of the areas of all its surfaces.

How do we find the surface area of a square pyramid? Get the area of a square base (sxs) Get the area of its triangular face and multiply it by 4 ( 4 (bxh) ) 2 Then add the 2 areas

The formula to be used to get the: Surface Area of a Square Pyramid : (SA) = sxs + 4 (bxh) 2 5. Fixing Skills (Group Work) Do what you are told to do. Group I Find the surface area of a square pyramid model If: b = 25 cm h = 30 cm

Group II Measure the square pyramid and find its surface area. Group III- A square pyramid tent has a base of 4.5 m and 2 m high. How big is the tent? 6. Evaluation Solve the following answer. Label your answer. 1. How much wrapping paper is needed to wrap a square pyramid and has a 32 cm as its base and 15 cm as its height. 2. The Grade Six pupils made a model of square pyramid made of plywood. It is 6m high and has base of 8m. What is the surface area of a pyramid? 3. SA = ?

40 cm

20 cm 4. SA = ?

30.5 cm

12.5 cm

5. SA = ?

b = 18 cm

h = 24 cm

IV. Assignment Answer the following: 1. b = 40 cm h = 125 dm Find the surface area. 2. SA = ? b = 100 dm 3. SA = ? h = 125 dm
