Nunca se falou tanto em comrcio exterior, transporte e logstica

internacional, dficit da balana comercial e outras reas afins como nos
ltimos anos. Por outro lado, incompreensvel, ou mesmo insano, querer
mudar uma situao com meros discursos. Para reverter este quadro e nos
firmarmos como pas exportador e no apenas de matrias-primas
precisamos ter uma legislao compatvel e uma formao profissional
condizente.
O mundo globalizado requer profissionais de primeira linha que
realmente conheam o que esto fazendo e o que devem fazer. Caso
contrrio, estaro em desvantagem com relao aos seus colegas
estrangeiros. Esta capacitao inclui o domnio de lnguas estrangeiras,
pois no se pode conceber um verdadeiro profissional envolvido nos
negcios internacionais que no saiba se comunicar ou reconhecer os
elementos teis dos documentos compreendendo por vezes somas vultosas
de dinheiro que ele precisa manusear ou preencher. E esta comunicao
est hoje basicamente fundamentada no ingls.

No entanto, sabemos que h uma enorme necessidade de formao

adequada dos profissionais de comrcio exterior e, ao mesmo tempo, uma
carncia gritante de material, obras, cursos etc. sobre o assunto.
Esta publicao vem suprir plenamente muitas dessas carncias,
entre as quais:
falta no mercado de material didtico e de aperfeioamento na rea

de transporte e logstica internacional;
grande demanda latente de atualizao e aperfeioamento por parte
dos profissionais de comrcio exterior da iniciativa privada e setores
pblicos;
vrios cursos de graduao, ps-graduao/especializao ou de curta
durao em comrcio exterior e afins que precisam de tal material; e
constante crescimento do nmero desses cursos.
O Ingls no Transporte e na Logstica , portanto, muito oportuno,

visto que quase no h obras de seu quilate em nosso mercado.

NTRODUCTION
Este livro destina-se aos estudantes de transporte e logstica, bem

como aos profissionais que desejam aperfeioar-se na lngua inglesa deste
universo particular.
Obra tanto de referncia quanto ferramenta de aprendizado, ela no
se limita apenas ao vocabulrio especfico ao qual alguns reduzem com
muita freqncia a linguagem tcnica. Apoiando-se em textos didticos,
acompanhados por documentos autnticos, o autor quis dar uma viso
mais completa deste esperanto moderno que se tornou o ingls no mundo
do transporte e da logstica.
A linguagem apresentada expe claramente o vocabulrio sem o qual
o operador profissional no saberia desempenhar de maneira correta sua
funo. Por outro lado, inclui outros termos e expresses idiomticas
menos especficos na sua significao, mas cuja elevada freqncia foi
percebida pelo autor nos documentos profissionais sobre os quais se
fundamenta o seu trabalho de pesquisa.
Esta pesquisa, alis, o conduziu a desenvolver uma anlise das
necessidades junto aos profissionais do transporte internacional: as concluses a que chegou permitiram-lhe elaborar uma viso da lngua do

transporte e da logstica mais ampla do que um simples apanhado terminolgico. Trata-se de uma lngua ativa, ancorada num ingls mais geral,
do qual o usurio deve conhecer os grandes princpios; uma lngua cuja
prtica corresponde a um saber que podemos reagrupar sob a etiqueta
transferncia de informao.
A ttulo de exemplo, o profissional dever saber extrair de um
documento escrito (fax, telex, dossi, ...) certas informaes especficas
que lhe sero necessrias para preencher formulrios e solicitaes de
informaes em lnguas s vezes diferentes (ingls/francs...). Conforme
as circunstncias, esta situao pode se apresentar de diferentes maneiras.
Para ser eficaz, o profissional dever dispor de certa competncia
lingstica desenvolvida conforme estas grandes linhas mestras:
reconhecer o domnio de aplicao do ou dos documentos que lhe

so confiados, graas ao reconhecimento de um conjunto de
termos-chave caractersticos;
ler seletivamente estes documentos de maneira a extrair as informaes que dizem respeito atividade ou s necessidades em curso;
saber evitar os contra-sensos ou os sentidos errneos aos quais um
conhecimento insuficiente da sintaxe poderia facilmente induzir;
ser capaz de redigir memorandos, cartas e outros fax que a situao
exigir.
O autor quis responder a estas necessidades autnticas colocadas em

evidncia por sua pesquisa. O livro divide-se, assim, em nove captulos
organizados em torno de um mesmo tema particular:
a mercadoria, centro de interesse privilegiado da atividade por ns

exercida,
os diferentes modos de transporte, destacando o transporte martimo por sua importncia no interior da cadeia do transporte e da
logstica,
a organizao e os que atuam nesta cadeia, e
a comunicao entre os diferentes participantes.
Um captulo essencialmente destinado aos aspectos mais amplos

da logstica, que abre os horizontes aos problemas da produo, da estocagem e da distribuio de mercadorias.

Cada um destes captulos orienta-se em torno de dois grandes eixos:
Introducing Vocabulary: conjunto de documentos temticos cuja

funo apresentar conjuntamente um aspecto particular do transporte e da logstica, e o vocabulrio associado.
Reading texts: conjunto de documentos profissionais, com um
nvel idiomtico um pouco mais elevado que os textos introdutivos,
cuja funo apresentar, dentro de um contexto autntico, a terminologia que o leitor acaba de descobrir.
A cada um destes textos acrescentada uma bateria de exerccios,

permitindo ao leitor exercitar sua competncia no domnio particular.
Dentro de uma preocupao de progresso pedaggica, o autor organizou o conjunto de captulos no somente em funo dos assuntos
tratados (do mais simples ao mais complexo), mas tambm em funo dos
nveis de linguagem utilizados nos documentos apresentados (do bsico
ao avanado).
O Captulo Sete apresenta vrios testes de vocabulrio, cuja funo
permitir ao leitor avaliar seus prprios conhecimentos, englobando o
conjunto de temas apresentados no livro.
O domnio do transporte e da logstica diz respeito a um mundo
particular no qual preponderam a mercadoria e as atividades correlacionadas. Comunicar-se neste mundo, supe uma capacidade de administrar
meandros sintticos particulares que encontram nesse ingls especfico
uma freqncia maior do que no ingls mais geral. O Captulo Oito
apresenta uma lista e prope ao leitor a possibilidade de revisar a utilizao
e a construo desta gramtica do transporte e da logstica.
Enfim, para que este livro reflita o mais fielmente possvel a viso
da lngua do transporte e da logstica que definimos, o Captulo Nove
apresenta um conjunto de atividades autnticas, baseadas principalmente
nos problemas de transmisso de informaes, que colocam em ao os
diferentes aspectos do domnio lingstico que esta obra empenhou-se em
apresentar.
A verso brasileira apresenta um glossrio, ao final, para facilitar sua
utilizao pelo leitor.

Introducing vocabulary
Various types of goods
International exchanges involve the transport

of a large variety of goods whose nature varies
according to the economies of their countries
of origin. Roughly speaking, less developed
countries (L.D.C.s) mostly export their
produces and raw materials, while a large
part of industrialized countries exports is
made up of their products and manufactured goods or processed
goods.
Examples of the first categories of goods would be timber
(construction wood) and logs (tree trunks) from African ports (which can
even be carried to these ports from landlocked countries without any

coastline), ore, livestock (live animals, cattle), not to mention oil products
or petroleum products (mainly crude oil although refined oil
represents a significant part of the traffic), and perishable goods such
as bananas and tropical fruits.
Developed countries more readily export the output of their industries
and agricultures: grain and in a more general way foodstuff possibly
processed , chemicals (including NDCs Non Dangerous Chemicals),
valuables of all sorts
These goods are often classified in the shipping trade as general
cargo - or mixed cargo, break bulk cargo.
A large part is even carried as dry cargo or bulk cargo (not to
be mistaken with bulky or cumbersome cargo) when not packaged
into units.

Packaging
One of the requirements for the safe transport of

commodities is the packaging, which must be
adapted to the specific goods (some goods, for
example, require airtight or water-proof packaging
to avoid damage). Different commodities may
however be packed together if they are of the same
type.
To make handling operations (also called goods handling or
stevedoring) easier, goods tend to be more and more despatched in unit

loads, i.e. standardized parcels. Hence, the evolution has been towards
the packaging of smaller parcels into pallets and crates, of liquid
cargoes into drums, of such goods as cotton or flour into bales or
bags, which are all much more convenient to handle and stow in the
ships hold.
Some parcels must bear special signs indicating their contents or
warning stevedores against rough handling. These signs may be stencilled
directly on the parcel or displayed on a label. For example, D.G. Labels
(Dangerous Goods labels), to be kept dry, keep in cool place,
indicate these parcels should be placed in specific places aboard the ship.
Other labels are indications to handling operators: this side up/down,
handle with care, no hooks, etc
The development of containers seems to have been the most striking

feature of the evolution of packaging in recent years.
Easy handling and stowing explain their rapid growth, but so does
the range of possibilities they offer: standardised containers (20footers,
TEUs) are available for goods of all types and specific types can be
resorted to for special shipments.
A single shipper may need a complete container (FCL/Full Container
Load) or only part of it, in which case consolidation or groupage
will take place with several shipments (LCL/Less than Container
Load). Packing a consignment into a container is the stuffing operation,
carried out in the stuffing shed. The opposite operation is referred to as
stripping.
Labels placed on each container should indicate a number of
information: measurements or dimensions , payload, tare weight,
gross weight and net weight. Each box should also bear a date plate as
well as a CSC plate (Container Safety Certificate) to indicate it conforms
to approved standards of safety.
