CCGPS Coordinate Algebra Unit 1 Relationships Between Quantities

Dear Parents, Welcome to the new school year! We are eager to work with you and your students as we learn new mathematical concepts. The State of Georgia is introducing Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) that call for students to be actively engaged in doing math in order to learn math. 45 states will be implementing the same standards during the 2012-2014 school years. In the classroom, students will frequently work on tasks and activities to discover and apply mathematical thinking. Students will be expected to explain or justify their answers and to write clearly and properly. Over the next couple of years, assessments will change from solely multiple-choice to include constructed response and short answer items. Mathematical content will be organized into units. The current textbook adoption is not completely aligned to the CCGPS. This will result in the teacher having to provide supplementary resources for students. The next textbook adoption is slated for spring of 2013.

Reason quantitatively and use units to solve problems.

Common Core Standards for Unit 1

Interpret the structure of expressions (linear & exponential with integer exponents). Create, solve, & graph equations/inequalities that describe numbers or relationships.

Reasoning Vocabulary Terms

Coefficient: A number multiplied by a variable. Constraint: Domain: The set of x-coordinates of the set of points on a graph; the set of x-coordinates of a given set of ordered pairs. The value that is the input in a function or relation. Equation: A number sentence that contains an equals symbol. Expression: A mathematical phrase involving at least one variable and sometimes numbers and operation symbols. Factor: a number that can be simplified from each term in an expression Inequality: Any mathematical sentence that contains the symbols > (greater than), < (less than), < (less than or equal to), or > (greater than or equal to). Literal Equation: an equation in which known quantities are expressed either wholly or in part by means of letters Ordered Pair: A pair of numbers, (x, y), that indicate the position of a point on a Cartesian plane. Pythagorean Theorem: It is a theorem that states a relationship that exists in any right triangle. If the lengths of the legs in the right triangle are a and b and the length of the hypotenuse is c, we can write the theorem as the following equation: Range: The y-coordinates of the set of points on a graph. Also, the ycoordinates of a given set of ordered pairs. The range is the output in a function or a relation. Substitution: To replace one element of a mathematical equation or expression with another. Term: a number, variable, product, or quotient in an expression. It is not a sum or difference. Variable: A letter or symbol used to represent a number.
