ABSTRACT
Television viewing has undergone huge developments and advancement since the days television sets were invented. The usual CRT television sets with big cathode ray tubes have been replaced by much portable and space saving devices. After LCD and Plasma televisions the latest in the line is the LED television sets. This report will explain the advancement in television technology from CRT television sets to LED TVs. As the technology migrates continuously at fast speeds, LED has penetrated into both small-sized LCD panel backlight and general lighting areas. The research for this report was concentrated in the field of LED technology being applied in television industry and so this application of LED technology will be explained in greater detail as compared to other areas of applicability. Also explained is how society is being affected by these applications and what future applications may be in store.

INTRODUCTION
This report is about the LED TVs and its applications. The history of television technology and how it works are important for understanding this report and so each has its own section within the report. How it compares to other television systems and its uses will be discussed as well. The goal of this report is to explain the potentials of LED TVs. This report is intended for anyone who: uses television in their home, uses tv for leisure activities, is curious about the applications, or is curious about how it works. Actually, this report is for everyone since television has become important part of our life. LED TV screens have come a long way from the standard box sets that first debuted in the 1920s. Since then, technological advancements have provided consumers with a variety of brighter, wider and clearer screen display choices available in Light Emitting Diodes (LED), Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and plasma. These screens differ in their longevity and color as well as their environmental effects. Plasmas, which have been the longest running product on the market, have been popular for resiliency and good contrast ratio, while LCDs have been well received for their energy efficiency. But the newest of the technology bunch, LED, is an improvement of LCDs; continual developments make these screens thinner, allowing for the greatest portability and a luminous look. Below is an explanation of LED technology and how it compares to other display types. The LED TV is a more advanced version of the LCD TV. While both types of TV rely on LCD technology and have flat-panel designs. "LED TVs are slimmer, brighter, and more detailed than your traditional LCD TV." LED TVs function by illuminating LCD panels with LED backlighting. However, not all LED TVs utilize the same type of LED backlighting. Liquid crystal display is a form of visual display technology that functions by sandwiching a layer of liquid crystals between two transparent electrodes -- or conductive surfaces. Liquid crystals are specialized molecules that flow like liquids but polarize light like solid, crystalline structures. An LED TV can alter the alignment of these liquid crystals by applying an electric current to small, specific areas of the liquid crystal layer. By altering the arrangement of the liquid crystals, an LED can control how the layer transmits the light that flows from the TV's backlighting. In this way, an LED TV can generate on-screen imagery. While a traditional LCD TV relies on the same technology, an LED TV utilizes a more advanced form of backlighting.

LITERATURE SURVEY
This literature review provides a discussion of areas related to the qualitative research undertaken by me. The majority of these areas have been selected primarily in line with a need to position LED Television within the wider context of historical, present and future considerations. Other areas were selected for discussion because of a need to highlight their importance and identify areas that require particular attention in order for LED Television developments to cater to the needs of particular audiences, an example of this in particular is the area of Childrens gaming. The idea to this project initially was gathered from Electronis For You Magazines December 2012 issue titled Next Generation Displays. Detailed study and references were taken from various sources including web articles and white papers. A white paper titled LED TV : Technology Overview and the DLP advantage by DJ Segler from Texas Instruments was thoroughly studied and referenced. Other web articles that were studied are provided in the refrences column at the end of this synopsis. The major website that was referenced was www.electronicsforu.com and its digital magazine website www.efymag.com .

MERITS AND DEMERITS

MERITS Picture Quality : This is an important advantage with LED TV over LCD televisions. You will be able to see a better picture quality if you use LED Television which is better than LCD TV. The black levels are improved a lot and you will see blackest colors. And since a LED TV uses LED ( light emitting diodes), the brightness is significantly improved over normal LCD televisions which use fluorescent bulbs.

Energy efficiency : Besides better picture quality, LED Televisions are also energy efficient. They consume very less energy compared to LCD televisions. There is almost 50% reduction in the power consumption for LED televisions.

The contrast is much better in LED TV compared to LCD television.

The life span of LED TV is better than LCD televisions.

Like LCD televisions, mercury is not used for lighting the display panel in LED television.

A LED TV is the most reliable compared to LCD television or a plasma TV.

DEMERITS Price : LED Televisions are quite expensive when compared to LCD TV or a plasma TV. It is almost twice the cost of a LCD television.

It is difficult to mount the LED TV on the wall as they have more dimensional depth.

Compared to plasma TVs, LED TV do not have better Contrast ratio.

APPLICATIONS
The following is a list of some areas where the LED technology is being applied: Automotive Applications Automotive lighting is used to keep drivers away from accidents when driving during night time. LED's are excellent lighting effects for auto mobiles. Industrial Applications There are far and wide benefits of LED lighting in the industrial sector. For one, it provides clear, concise illumination for traffic lights. Medical Applications Complex, surgical procedures in the field of medicine naturally requires light that is clear without giving extra heat. Residential If you decide to make home improvements, then now is also the best time to make transition of your lighting fixtures by changing traditional bulbs to LED replacement. Retail Display Applications Among advertising and marketing's strong point is by using attractive effects that will surely catch the attention of potential buyers.

CONCLUSION
As LED technology developments continue to improve brightness and reliability, LED illumination may become more of a mainstream light source for many future applications. Future developments will be able to take further advantage of the fast LED switching time to improve video performance, enhance contrast without opto-mechanical components, and create adjustable color gamuts that far exceed the possibilities of traditional illumination sources. New products will soon benefit from these fundamental capabilities providing new, unique designs that offer instant on, better colors, and overall better picture using. With the advantages of LED it is expected that HDTVs will provide even better performance with better reliability far exceeding any existing HDTV product.
