The Indian readymade garment industry is mainly differentiated as: 1. EOU- Export Oriented Unit 2. Domestic Unit While export item manufacturing is guided by the written guidelines of buyer or importer in the form of Specification sheet, the domestic units has to carry out all functions like market research, design development etc. to production and marketing by themselves. The basic differences between export manufacturing and domestic manufacturing are: EXPORT MANUFACTURING Order placed in form of size, colour and quantity from importer DOMESTIC MANUFACTURING Order determined by demand forwarded by retail outlets or based on market research and demand of target customers All guidelines regarding design to manufacturing are prepared in house Marketing and sales are separate departments of the domestic unit to ensure distribution The work is not completed until goods are sold to customers
