Weekday Restrictions on First Avenue South begin Monday

SEATTLE – The Seattle Department of Transportation is completely reconstructing First Avenue South
between South Stacy Street and South Horton Street. Weekday traffic restrictions on First Avenue South
will go into effect on Monday March 2 and will remain in effect until September 2009. During this
period, daytime traffic (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) will be limited to two northbound lanes and one southbound
lane with no parking on either side of the street.

At night and on weekends beginning Friday, February 27, traffic will be limited to a single lane in each
direction. These nighttime closures will continue as needed for the duration of the project.

The contractor will first install a 24-inch water main. During this work, as much work as possible will be
done at night (6 p.m. to 7 a.m.) and weekends to minimize traffic disruptions. When work on the water
main is completed, crews will replace the east side of the street including the sidewalk, working both
days and nights.

Until the project is completed, no left hand turns will be allowed off of First Avenue South except at
South Lander Street, and left hand turns onto First Avenue South may be restricted at some intersections
in the construction zone.

Access from First Avenue will be maintained for local businesses at all times, including Sears, Home
Depot and Starbucks’ administrative offices. For trips to destinations outside this area, drivers are
advised to use alternate routes such as East Marginal Way S, Fourth Avenue S or Airport Way S.
