March 2013

It looks like March will be coming in like a Wild Cat! We are all looking forward to our Winter Activity activities on the 4th (Grades 4-6) and the 6th (Grades 1-3). We are pleased that we were able to accommodate all students with their first choice! If you have an updated Criminal Reference Check and can help us out with supervision, please let your childs teacher know as soon as possible. Supervisors are required to wear a hockey helmet to be on the ice and the pool requires one adult in the water for every four children not passing the test of being able to swim the length of the pool. Thanks again to our awesome School Council who gave $800 towards the activities in order for us to keep the student cost to a minimum!

The grade 4-6 students are really enjoying the intramural basketball being played during some afternoon recesses. It looks like the Spurs are the team to beat! Our new school logo is a hit! Thanks goes out to Amanda Homeniuk from School Council, who along with Ms. Byers came up with the design. By the end of the month we should be seeing many students proudly wearing their purchased t-shirts! We are also looking forward to our monthly Spirit Day activity on March 22nd Pajama Day!

Have you noticed the basket of beautiful fresh fruit in the office? Every morning its filled up and by the end of almost every day its empty. Dozens of students enjoy this healthy snack each day. We are able to provide this food, thanks to funding from the non-profit organization, Food for Thought of Lanark County. As a means to raise funds, Food for Thought has produced a cookbook, full of recipes and ideas submitted by people from around Lanark County. The cookbooks cost $15 each, with $5 from each book going directly to Arklan School, and the remainder going to Food for Thought who in turn support our nutrition program. The books are available at the school office. Consider treating yourself to a great book, or perhaps purchasing one as a gift. We would like to take this opportunity to thank a dedicated parent, Karyne Ward, who shops weekly for our fruit and fills the basket to overflowing every single morning. A big thank you also goes to Steph Grabe, our parent volunteer, who compiles all the paperwork and submits the reports to Food for Thought, resulting in our financial grants.

Updates are posted by 6:15 AM. Also, theres no need to call the school if your child will be absent because their bus is cancelled. BUT, please do contact us if your child is not a bus student, and is staying home on a snow-day.
