A Message from the Commanding Officer

Spring Greetings Everyone! Hard to imagine that spring is going to be here in a matter of weeks. It seems just like yesterday that we were celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year. Even with the time off from the multiple holidays, everyone continues to make great strides towards process improvements, and I am immensely proud of our accomplishments. As you will have certainly noticed, there has been a modification to the amount of time off during a holiday weekends. As we align with what is being done in other parts of the Marine Corps, we should not view this as a negative, but rather as we are getting back to basics. So, when planning your family events during these long weekends, please the schedule on the length of the liberty hours. As we have all been following in the news, our Nation is facing fiscal uncertainty. This looming fiscal uncertainty will no doubt potentially affect us all. Being a good steward of our taxpayers funds is not

acceptable anymore. We all must be Ultra Excellent with the funds we are given to manage; to be able to deliver the worlds finest quality dental services to our Nations Warriors. I would hasten to say that we have been excelCOMMANDING OFFICER continued on page 12

This March marks one year as your Command Master Chief here with 2d Dental Battalion/Naval Dental Center. I look back at everything that has happen in the past year and wonder how it all went by so fast. Anita and I had just realized only last week that it had been a year. Your accomplishments have been remarkable. We have deployed many of our personnel on various deployments in support of multiple operations and will continue to do so over the next few months. With that written we have a lot more to do. March represents the start of the Permanent Change of Station (PCS) season. We will see Sailors who have been with

News You Can Use From Your FRO

Greetings Dental Battalion Family & Friends!
As families living in a military town there are certain things that happen like clockwork; one of them is the multitude of homes that go on the market to be sold or rented. It seems like ornamental yard figures, spruced up flower beds, trimmed trees and for sale/rent signs are the staples for spring yards. For some people, these signs (no pun intended) are huge stressors in their lives whether they are moving or not. For the family staying put these are the types of questions we generally ask ourselves: Who will the new neighbors be and will they have children? Will we like them and will they like us? Will they keep their yards nice and neat? I wonder if they are going to have loud parties and so on. While we shouldnt worry about things we cannot change, it is inevitable that we will still fret over losing that which we are comfortable with our current neighbors. If it is our turn to move and we own the home we are living in, the
Mission of the Family Readiness Officer includes conducting official communication to service and family members on behalf of the unit's commanding officer; providing information and referrals; assisting with readiness and deployment support; and managing the family readiness volunteers.

stressors are ramped up even higher. (Actually they are pretty intense regardless of whether you are a military family or not!) We are trying to sell or rent our home in a matter of months (usually 4-6 months), ensuring we getting the right price and then prepping for the next duty station is very common place. And if our military member is deployed, then we, as the spouse at home, accomplish these tasks alone. Luckily, there are tons of resources for these situations! Each Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) has a program called Relocation Assistance. They offer classes on home buying and selling, workshops on making a smooth move, tips for helping your kids adjust the area and much more. If you are new to the area and need to borrow household items such as an iron, dishes, baby high chairs, sweepers, coffee pots and etc, then you may take advantage of the

Loan Locker. They even have a sponsorship class specifically for your children (ages 6-18) entitled, Kids in touch with Kids and if you want to know more about your next duty station, they have resources for that too. Lastly and this is probably the best part all of these services are FREE!! If you would like more information on the Relocation Assistance Program or any of the other MCCS opportunities, you can contact me and Ill be happy to help guide you to the best resource for you. In the meantime, enjoy the blooming flowers and trees, longer days, warmer weather and the anticipation of summer! ~Kara

lent stewards of the tax payers dollars. Our contributions have assisted us in accomplishing this obligation. Examples of how the Command has been contributing toward being excellent stewards are: We are a highly productive command, providing superior dental services to our Nation's Warriors
Our primary mission of operational dental readiness has been greatly improved gaining a higher state of dental readiness throughout the MEF and Marine Corps Installations-East We have improved our clinical efficiencies and improved our access to care for the Warriors We have recaptured workload that was once leaking out to the dental network avoiding those expenditures Our TAD process has been GREATLY curtailed and CE TAD has undergone scrutiny I can go on and on about our Command and all of the good we have achieved. I would ask everyone to understand the current fiscal uncertainty facing our Nation, and its impacts. Each Service Member, GS/WG/Contract Employee is a VALUABLE Team Member of 2d Dental Battalion/Naval Dental Center and without our dedication to these services we deliver, we would likely not have been able to achieve the mission goals set by the Command and our Leaders. Lastly, there are a number of holidays on the horizon and I ask that you continue to be safe, vigilant and to take care of each other. Did you know this fact

FOULED ANCHOR- The foul anchor as a naval insignia got its start as the seal of the Lord Howard of Effingham. He was the Lord Admiral of England at the time of the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. During this period their personal seal of the great officer of state was adopted as the seal of his office. The fouled anchor still remains the official seal of the Lord High Admiral of Great Britain. When this office became part of the present Board of Admiralty, the seal was retained on buttons, official seals, and cap badges. The Navys adoption of this symbol and many other customs can be directly attributed to the influence of the British Naval tradition. The fouled anchor is among one of them. 12

the Battalion move on to bigger and greater challenges at new duty stations. Some will take on new roles and responsibilities all while progressing through their careers. Some will decide to stay here in the Camp Lejeune area and others will see the end of service from either completing their obligated service or retirement. In turn we will gain a new group of Sailors and staff to our command and at the very least we will be busy. With spring and summer just around the corner our minds will turn to leave, cookouts, and time with friends and family. Safety will again be emphasized as we transition into a very active time of year. As we continue doing our jobs here in the Battalion I need each of you to remember these three things: Leadership Development, Good Order and Discipline, and Controlling What We Own. With the uncertainty over our budget and the continued threats to the nation we protect we have to stay focused on the mission at hand. Just doing your job is not going to be enough. In addition to your responsibilities you have to remain firm to the Navys Core Values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. I trust that each of you will do just that. Trust is built upon two factors, character and competence. To have trust there has to be a balance between character and competence. Ethics theory states that character is Doing the Right Thing while competence is Getting the Right Things Done and stewardship is A Job with Trust A great book to read about trust and the impact it has is The Speed of Trust, by Stephen M.R. Covey. This book covers those principles that help build and sustain trust. Without trust we will fail. HMCM Christopher Dingler Command Master Chief

Chocolate Cherry Cake

Ingredients
1 1 1 1 1 1 box dark chocolate fudge cake mix bag frozen cherries bag chocolate chips container dark chocolate icing small container heavy whipping cream can cherries

This cake is pretty easy, and tastes amazing. First, mix the cake mix per box instructions. Add canned cherries (to taste) and add the juice (to taste) but save some for the whipped cream middle. When the cake is baked, set aside to cool. Use the heavy whipping cream and beat until you get stiff peaks of whipped cream. Slowly add in the rest of the cherry juice, but make sure it stays firm. You may need to refrigerate it to stiffen it. When the cake is completely cooled, spread the whip cream between the two layers and then ice the rest of the cake with the dark chocolate icing. Top the cake with the chocolate chips, and there you have a semi homemade, yummy cake!! Enjoy!
