The specific heat of a substance is the amount of heat in BTU that it takes to change the temperature of one pound of that substance by one degree Fahrenheit. For example, the specific heat of water is 1.0 BTU/ lb. F. Therefore, to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1 degree F takes 1 BTU. Specific heats of other materials vary.
