GENERAL

DESCRIPTION Thissectionofthespecificationincludesthefurnishing,installation,connection andtestingofthemicroprocessorcontrolled,intelligentreportingfirealarm equipmentrequiredtoformacomplete,operative,coordinatedsystem.Itshall include,butnotbelimitedto,alarminitiatingdevices,alarmnotification appliances,FireAlarmControlPanel(FACP),auxiliarycontroldevices, annunciators,andwiringasshownonthedrawingsandspecifiedherein. ThefirealarmsystemshallcomplywithrequirementsofNFPAStandard72for ProtectedPremisesSignalingSystemsexceptasmodifiedandsupplementedby thisspecification.Thesystemshallbeelectricallysupervisedandmonitorthe integrityofallconductors. ThefirealarmsystemshallbemanufacturedbyanISO9001certifiedcompany andmeettherequirementsofBSEN9001:ANSI/ASQCQ90011994. TheFACPandperipheraldevicesshallbemanufactured100%byasingleU.S. manufacturer(ordivisionthereof). ThesystemanditscomponentsshallbeUnderwritersLaboratories,Inc.listed undertheappropriateULtestingstandardaslistedhereinforfirealarm applicationsandtheinstallationshallbeincompliancewiththeULlisting. TheinstallingcompanyshallemployNICET(minimumLevelIIFireAlarm Technology)techniciansonsitetoguidethefinalcheckoutandtoensurethe systemsintegrity. SCOPE Anewintelligentreporting,microprocessorcontrolledfiredetectionsystemshall beinstalledinaccordancetotheprojectspecificationsanddrawings. BasicPerformance:

Alarm,troubleandsupervisorysignalsfromallintelligentreportingdevices shallbeencodedonNFPAStyle4(ClassB)SignalingLineCircuits(SLC). InitiationDeviceCircuits(IDC)shallbewiredClassA(NFPAStyleD)as partofanaddressabledeviceconnectedbytheSLCCircuit. NotificationApplianceCircuits(NAC)shallbewiredClassA(NFPAStyleZ) aspartofanaddressabledeviceconnectedbytheSLCCircuit. OnStyle6or7(ClassA)configurationsasinglegroundfaultoropencircuit onthesystemSignalingLineCircuitshallnotcausesystemmalfunction, lossofoperatingpowerortheabilitytoreportanalarm. AlarmsignalsarrivingattheFACPshallnotbelostfollowingaprimary powerfailure(oroutage)untilthealarmsignalisprocessedandrecorded.

BASICSYSTEMFUNCTIONALOPERATION Whenafirealarmconditionisdetectedandreportedbyoneofthesystem initiatingdevices,thefollowingfunctionsshallimmediatelyoccur: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. AbacklitLCDdisplayshallindicateallinformationassociatedwiththefire alarmcondition,includingthetypeofalarmpointanditslocationwithinthe protectedpremises. Printingandhistorystorageequipmentshalllogtheinformationassociated eachnewfirealarmcontrolpanelcondition,alongwithtimeanddateof occurrence. Allsystemoutputprogramsassignedviacontrolbyeventinterlock programmingtobeactivatedbytheparticularpointinalarmshallbe executed,andtheassociatedsystemoutputs(notificationappliances and/orrelays)shallbeactivated.

SUBMITTALS General: 1. 2. TwocopiesofallsubmittalsshallbesubmittedtotheArchitect/Engineerfor review. Allreferencestomanufacturer'smodelnumbersandotherpertinent informationhereinisintendedtoestablishminimumstandardsof performance,functionandquality.EquivalentcompatibleULlisted equipmentfromothermanufacturersmaybesubstitutedforthespecified equipmentaslongastheminimumstandardsaremet. Forequipmentotherthanthatspecified,thecontractorshallsupplyproof thatsuchsubstituteequipmentequalsorexceedsthefeatures,functions, performance,andqualityofthespecifiedequipment.

Manuals: 1. 2. 3. Submitsimultaneouslywiththeshopdrawings,completeoperatingand maintenancemanualslistingthemanufacturer'sname(s),including technicaldatasheets. Wiringdiagramsshallindicateinternalwiringforeachdeviceandthe interconnectionsbetweentheitemsofequipment. Provideaclearandconcisedescriptionofoperationthatgives,indetail,the informationrequiredtoproperlyoperatetheequipmentandsystem.

D.

SoftwareModifications 1. 2. Providetheservicesofafactorytrainedandauthorizedtechnicianto performallsystemsoftwaremodifications,upgradesorchanges. Responsetimeofthetechniciantothesiteshallnotexceed4hours. Provideallhardware,software,programmingtoolsanddocumentation necessarytomodifythefirealarmsystemonsite.Modificationincludes additionanddeletionofdevices,circuits,zonesandchangestosystem operationandcustomlabelchangesfordevicesorzones.Thesystem structureandsoftwareshallplacenolimitonthetypeorextentofsoftware modificationsonsite.

Certifications: Togetherwiththeshopdrawingsubmittal,submitacertificationfromthemajor equipmentmanufacturerindicatingthattheproposedsupervisorofthe installationandtheproposedperformerofcontractmaintenanceisanauthorized representativeofthemajorequipmentmanufacturer.Includenamesand addressesinthecertification.

GUARANTY: Allworkperformedandallmaterialandequipmentfurnishedunderthiscontract shallbefreefromdefectsandshallremainsoforaperiodofatleastone(1)year fromthedateofacceptance.Thefullcostofmaintenance,laborandmaterials requiredtocorrectanydefectduringthisoneyearperiodshallbeincludedinthe submittalbid.

POSTCONTRACTMAINTENANCE: Completemaintenanceandrepairserviceforthefirealarmsystemshallbe availablefromafactorytrainedauthorizedrepresentativeofthemanufacturerof themajorequipmentforaperiodoffive(5)yearsafterexpirationoftheguaranty. Aspartofthebid/proposal,includeaquoteforamaintenancecontracttoprovide allmaintenance,tests,andrepairsdescribedbelow.Includealsoaquotefor

unscheduledmaintenance/repairs,includinghourlyratesfortechnicianstrained onthisequipment,andresponsetravelcostsforeachyearofthemaintenance period.Submittalsthatdonotidentifyallpostcontractmaintenancecostswillnot beaccepted.Ratesandcostsshallbevalidfortheperiodoffive(5)yearsafter expirationoftheguaranty. Maintenanceandtestingshallbeonasemiannualbasisorasrequiredbythe AHJ.Apreventivemaintenancescheduleshallbeprovidedbythecontractor describingtheprotocolforpreventivemaintenance.Thescheduleshallinclude: 1. 2. 3. 1.6. POSTCONTRACTEXPANSIONS: Thecontractorshallhavetheabilitytoprovidepartsandlabortoexpandthe systemspecified,ifsorequested,foraperiodoffive(5)yearsfromthedateof acceptance. Aspartofthesubmittal,includeaquotationforallpartsandmaterial,andall installationandtestlaborasneededtoincreasethenumberofintelligentor addressabledevicesbytenpercent(10%).Thisquotationshallincludeintelligent smokedetectors,intelligentheatdetectors,addressablemanualstations, addressablemonitormodulesandaddressablemodulesequalinnumbertoone tenthofthenumberrequiredtomeetthisspecification(listactualquantityof eachtype). Thequotationshallincludeinstallation,testlabor,andlabortoreprogramthe systemforthis10%expansion.IfadditionalFACPhardwareisrequired,include thematerialandlabornecessarytoinstallthishardware. Donotincludecostofconduitorwireorthecosttoinstallconduitorwireexcept forlabortomakefinalconnectionsattheFACPandateachintelligent addressabledevice.Donotincludethecostofconventionalperipheralsorthe costofinitiatingdevicesornotificationappliancesconnectedtotheaddressable monitor/controlmodules. Submittalsthatdonotincludethisestimateofpostcontractexpansioncostwill notbeaccepted. APPLICABLESTANDARDSANDSPECIFICATIONS: Thespecificationsandstandardslistedbelowformapartofthisspecification. Thesystemshallfullycomplywiththelatestissueofthesestandards,if applicable.

PART2.0 2.1.

EQUIPMENTANDMATERIAL,GENERAL:

Allequipmentandcomponentsshallbenew,andthemanufacturer'scurrent model.Thematerials,appliances,equipmentanddevicesshallbetestedand listedbyanationallyrecognizedapprovalsagencyforuseaspartofaprotective signalingsystem,meetingtheNationalFireAlarmCode. Allequipmentandcomponentsshallbeinstalledinstrictcompliancewith manufacturers'recommendations.Consultthemanufacturer'sinstallation manualsforallwiringdiagrams,schematics,physicalequipmentsizes,etc., beforebeginningsysteminstallation. Allequipmentshallbeattachedtowallsandceiling/floorassembliesandshallbe heldfirmlyinplace(e.g.,detectorsshallnotbesupportedsolelybysuspended ceilings).Fastenersandsupportsshallbeadequatetosupporttherequiredload. CONDUITANDWIRE: Conduit: 1. 2. 3. 4. ConduitshallbeinaccordancewithTheNationalElectricalCode(NEC), localandstaterequirements. Whererequired,allwiringshallbeinstalledinconduitorraceway.Conduit fillshallnotexceed40percentofinteriorcrosssectionalareawherethree ormorecablesarecontainedwithinasingleconduit. Conduitshallnotenterthefirealarmcontrolpanel,oranyotherremotely mountedcontrolpanelequipmentorbackboxes,exceptwhereconduit entryisspecifiedbytheFACPmanufacturer. Conduitshallbe3/4inch(19.1mm)minimum.

Wire: 1. 2. Allfirealarmsystemwiringshallbenew. Wiringshallbeinaccordancewithlocal,stateandnationalcodes(e.g., NECArticle760)andasrecommendedbythemanufacturerofthefire alarmsystem.Numberandsizeofconductorsshallbeasrecommendedby thefirealarmsystemmanufacturer,butnotlessthan18AWG(1.02mm) forInitiatingDeviceCircuitsandSignalingLineCircuits,and14AWG(1.63 mm)forNotificationApplianceCircuits. Allwireandcableshallbelistedand/orapprovedbyarecognizedtesting agencyforusewithaprotectivesignalingsystem. Wiringusedforthemultiplexcommunicationcircuit(SLC)shallbetwisted andunshieldedandsupportaminimumwiringdistanceof12,500feet.The designofthesystemshallpermituseofIDCandNACwiringinthesame conduitwiththeSLCcommunicationcircuit. Allfieldwiringshallbeelectricallysupervisedforopencircuitandground fault. ThefirealarmcontrolpanelshallbecapableofttappingClassB(NFPA Style4)SignalingLineCircuits(SLCs).Systemsthatdonotalloworhave restrictionsin,forexample,theamountofttaps,lengthofttapsetc.,are notacceptable.

Initiatingcircuitsshallbearrangedtoservelikecategories(manual,smoke, waterflow).Mixedcategorycircuitryshallnotbepermittedexceptonsignaling linecircuitsconnectedtointelligentreportingdevices. CentralMicroprocessor 1. Themicroprocessorshallbeastateoftheart,highspeed,16bitRISC deviceanditshallcommunicatewith,monitorandcontrolallexternal interfaces.ItshallincludeanEPROMforsystemprogramstorage,Flash memoryforbuildingspecificprogramstorage,anda"watchdog"timer circuittodetectandreportmicroprocessorfailure. Themicroprocessorshallcontainandexecuteallcontrolbyevent programsforspecificactiontobetakenifanalarmconditionisdetectedby thesystem.Controlbyeventequationsshallbeheldinnonvolatile programmablememory,andshallnotbelostevenifsystemprimaryand secondarypowerfailureoccurs. Themicroprocessorshallalsoprovidearealtimeclockfortimeannotation ofsystemdisplays,printer,andhistoryfile.Thetimeofdayanddateshall notbelostifsystemprimaryandsecondarypowersuppliesfail.Thereal timeclockmayalsobeusedtocontrolnonfirefunctionsatprogrammed timeofday,dayofweek,anddayofyear. Aspecialprogramcheckfunctionshallbeprovidedtodetectcommon operatorerrors. Anautoprogram(selflearn)functionshallbeprovidedtoquicklyinstall initialfunctionsandmakethesystemoperational. Forflexibilityandtoensureprogramvalidity,anoptionalWindows(TM) basedprogramutilityshallbeavailable.Thisprogramshallbeusedtooff lineprogramthesystemwithbatchupload/download,andhavetheability toupgradethemanufacturers(FLASH)systemcodechanges.This programshallalsohaveaverificationutility,whichscanstheprogramfiles, identifyingpossibleerrors.Itshallalsohavetheabilitytocompareold programfilestonewones,identifyingdifferencesinthetwofilestoallow completetestingofanysystemoperatingchanges.Thisshallbein incompliancewiththeNFPA72requirementsfortestingaftersystem modification.
