pepnns and abstracts in this volume were Presnted at a seminar on..Physiological systems in semiarid Environments" at the university of New Mexico on November 9, 10, and I l, 196?, under my direo tion. The seminar was supported by Grant cz-660 from the National Science Foundation. tts bLlectives were (i) to stimulate rerearctr in physiological sy$tems of plants and animals in semiarid areas, (ii) to explore possibilities for integrated research and teaching prqgrams in-colleges situated in or near semiarid areas, and (iii) to facilitate petroo*l communication among investigators and students in the
The principal addresses, by D. Bruce Dill, Frits W. Went, and G' Edgar folk, Jr., provided perspective and created an atmosphere that facllirated .i"trittgu of idias ind recognition of the need for and di'
recdon for future research. I hope students of biology, as they read these articles, will note the following points. l. Numerous clues for future study are gained by an historical ap proach to problems. 2. Orgnisms living in semiarid environments may be adapted to mot. thitt one aspeci of the environment, for example, heat, mois' ture, salt concentrations, and low atmospheric Pre{sure. 3. There is a need to lelate biological systems at various levels of
organization. Survival of individuals or species in an environment may be dependent on one or more characteristics Present in molecu' lar, tissue, crgan, system, whole'organism, or community level$. There is real need ior invesrigators (i) to describe environments in quantirative terms, (ii) to integrate information from various levels of bio' logical organization, and (iii) to design complimentary field and laboratory experiments, 4. Deseit aninrals and plants may not be subject to stress because species characteristics and physiological adaptations make them well ruit"a for life in environments which for other organisms may be stres$ful to the extent of being lethal' "Kangaroo rats appear to be
h"ppy animals."
