I enjoy reading. I like authors with varying perspectives from different paradigms. It especially gets my attention when authors from different philosophical positions begin communicating a similar theme. Such has been the case with authors Wayne Jacobsen, Phyllis Tickle and Arthur Burk. All three see how we do this thing we call church changing. Wayne Jacobsen is the author of six books including one of my favorites He Loves Me. Jacobsen is passionately committed to helping people discover the joy and freedom of relational Christianity. He sees the church moving away from institutional structures and toward more relational approaches to God. From a relational perspective Wayne Jacobsen sees how we do this thing we call church changing. Phyllis Tickle is a brilliant church historian. Shes the founding editor of the Religion Department of Publishers Weekly and author of more than 25 books. Her latest work titled The Great Emergence identifies 500 year cycles throughout history where the church cleans out the old forms of spirituality and replaces it with new ones. Tickle believes that we are at the beginning of another 500 year cycle. She sees Protestantism in all its denominational forms as losing influence and giving way to alternative forms of Christian expression. From an historical perspective Phyllis Tickle sees how we do this thing we call church changing. Arthur Burk is the founder of the Sapphire Leadership Group, a prophetic think tank. Burk also identifies changes throughout church history. From a prophetic perspective, Burk sees seven church seasons that parallel the Seven Redemptive Gifts of the Spirit listed in Romans 12:6-8. Those seven gifts are: Prophet, Servant, Teacher, Encourager, Giver, Ruler and Mercy. ...continued on page 2

Mercy & Changing Seasons continued from page 1

Burk believes that the church has transitioned from a Ruler Season to a Mercy Season beginning early in the 21st century. Emphasizing the significance of this transition Burk says that The protestant Reformation looks like childs play in comparison to the paradigm shift now at hand. From a prophetic perspective Arthur Burk sees how we do this thing we call church changing. The language of a Mercy Season has captured my attention. If these three unassociated voices are correct and change is indeed at hand, then I want to embrace it and not resist it. To that end Ill take the next few weeks to preach on the topic of mercy. Live Loved, Tom
