Presidents Message Last Wednesday at 7 o'clock in the morning I found myself standing outside Mark McEwan's upscale food emporium in Toronto. On an average morning, this would have been strange for me. Last Wednesday, however, we were there to meet for OFFMA's Food Tour of Toronto. It's no secret that Ontario Farm Fresh is expert at organizing fun and relevant tours and that these tours are always popular. Our Food Tour visited the brand new Longo's Leaside, Loblaw's at Maple Leaf Gardens, Evergreen Brickworks, and McEwan's. What a day - we came back with an army of new ideas and inspiration (and one giant maple-bacon doughnut for yours truly). I was especially happy to have met Rosanne Longo who spoke to us about her family's company and corporate culture. She reminded us all about the importance of our stories and histories, and remembering our places within the communities in which we do business. As January comes to an end (how did that happen?) and we head into February, OFFMA is gearing up for its big role at the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Convention in Niagara Falls. At last check, the Zingerman's Customer Service Workshop was filling up fast and tickets to OFFMA's 40th Anniversary Gala were moving quickly - great news! We're really excited about the line-up of speakers for this year's OFFMA Summit at the OFVC and I know you'll be impressed. February's convention is also the venue for our Annual General Meeting which will mark the start of another great year for Ontario Farm Fresh. I'd like to thank our Board of Directors for another fantastic year and for giving us their time, energy, and insights - many thanks to Amy, Brian, Cara, Leslie, Jay, Hollis, Colleen, Geri, Steve, and Carl. This year, we're saying goodbye to Geri Rounds (Round's Ranch) and Jay Howell (Brantview Apples) - two outstanding board members who will each have completed their second three year term on OFFMA's board. I'd like to say a special thank-you to Amy Strom (Strom's Farm), who's term as Past President will also end this February. Amy is a true champion for OFFMA who has inspired our board over the years with her positivity, enthusiasm, and leadership. Another special thank-you goes directly to the tireless and talented Cathy Bartolic. As President, I've had the great pleasure of working closely with Cathy for the last two years and I have such respect for her and her deep commitment to this organization. My term as OFFMA President will end after this year's convention but I'll be sticking around as Past President to help where I can. When I tell my friends from other industries about OFFMA, they can never quite understand how this all works. What surprises them is our culture of sharing, of generosity, and of friendship. They're surprised that we aren't more competitive or secretive with one another. What I have come to understand about OFFMA is that this culture of sharing is guided by goodness and the idea that when one of us does better, we all do better. From OFFMA I have learned a greater appreciation for community and collaboration. Working with so many talented board members has been inspiring and has (I think) made me a better businessperson. Each OFFMA member business is as unique as the personality of its owners and managers and yet it is our similar goals and challenges that make OFFMA so valuable. It has truly been my pleasure working with you. Thank you.

Round Table Talks - Back by Popular Demand

Amy Strom from Stroms Farm introduced this concept last year at the Ontario Fruit & Vegetable Convention. Several topics were announced, each table was assigned a topic and participants were invited to join the table they felt had the most relevant topic for their business. A small group discussion then ensued related to that topic. Participants were able to talk about what went well for them in the past year, what sorts of challenges they had, information and/or a product they may be looking forpretty well anything that was on their minds. At the end, a plenary session had each group share the most significant points that came up during the discussion. This years topics will be Marketing 2.1, Balancing Life, Profit Centres in a Bakery and Attractions under $100. This is your fair warning to get your heads around these topics, decide which one works best for you, come prepared to share and join us at the OFFMA Summit on Wednesday, February 20 at 4:00 pm for the Round Table Talks.

Fresh Facts

Are you ready to be pennyless?

In the Economic Action Plan 2012, the Government announced it would phase out the penny from Canada's coinage system. The decision to phase out the penny was due to its excessive and rising cost of production relative to face value, the increased accumulation of pennies by Canadians in their households, environmental considerations, and the significant handling costs the penny imposes on retailers, financial institutions and the economy in general. The estimated savings for taxpayers from phasing out the penny is $11 million a year. The cent will remain Canada's smallest unit for pricing goods and services. This will have no impact on payments made by cheque or electronic transactionsonly cash transactions will be affected. Moreover, pennies can still be used in cash transactions indefinitely with businesses that choose to accept them. Important Dates To help consumers, businesses, charities and financial institutions to plan, a transition date of February 4, 2013 has been set after which the Royal Canadian Mint will no longer distribute pennies. On this date, businesses will be encouraged to begin rounding cash transactions. Rounding Guidelines As pennies exit circulation, cash payments or transactions only will need to be rounded, either up or down, to the nearest five-cent increment. The Government of Canada will be adopting a rounding guideline that has been used successfully by other countries for its cash transactions with the public. Under this guideline, when pennies are not available, cash transactions will be rounded in a fair and transparent manner, as illustrated below:

When to round Again, only cash transactions require rounding. Cheques and transactions using electronic paymentsdebit, credit and payments cardsdo not need to be rounded, because they can be settled electronically to the exact amount. For any cash payment, only the final amount (or equivalently, the change owed) should be subject to rounding. Individual items, as well as any duties, fees or taxes, should be tabulated in their exact amount prior to rounding. For more information about the phasing out of the penny and Business FAQs, go to http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/learn/faqs-businesses-6900006#.UQklF7_ho4I

"It's always been this way"

The only standard is impermanence. It's very easy to believe that the world we live in has always been this way. Your ethnic group has always had a similar standing. Technology has always permitted certain kinds of interactions and is always improving. Real estate values always rise from decade to decade. (Until they didn't). A job has always been the standard way to make a living. Your chosen religion has always been practiced the way you practice it. People in positions of authority and leverage have always had degrees from famous colleges. Information has always been widely available. As soon as you accept that just about everything in our created world is only a few generations old, it makes it a lot easier to deal with the fact that the assumptions we make about the future are generally wrong, and that the stress we have over change is completely wasted. -Seth Godin
