RnHeals Monthly Journal January 2013 Name: Solis, Grace Marie Rallos Area of assignment: Labor/Delivery Room

I.

ACTIVITIES:

Being assigned in the delivery room was very surprising for me, I know for a fact that it is a busy area and it will be a challenge for me. During our first day of exposure, we joined the endorsement. Our head nurse maam Gliceria Enjambre oriented us on the physical set up and the routine tasks to be perform by each one of us as now being part of the area. Our first week was our observation week and we were assigned to different areas like the receiving area, IE room, labor room, and delivery room. I was first assigned in the Receiving Area where all the new patients come in and assessed. In that area, we interviewed the patient, getting the vital signs, asking their chief complaints and write in on the blotter. From there we will know which patient ne eds further assessment and referred it to the resident on duty and transfer it to the labor room. In this area also we are responsible in monitoring the progress of labor and replacement of the OB Packs. On my second week, I was assigned in the Recovery Room , where we take care of patients after operation. Since during that time there were OR nurses monitoring the patient, I opted to help the people assigned in the Delivery Room. In that area, we were allowed to prepare and give injections. Oxytocin IM after the baby is out and

oxytocin IV after the placenta is out. Luckily, there were a lot of students that were there to do the handle, assist and cord care and even the nurses notes for the safe delivery and the newborn care. On my third week, I was assigned in the labor room. We do vital signs monitor the patient and preparing for admission like administering IV lines and insertion of FBC depending on the doctors order. Lastly in was back in the receiving area doing the same thing we did on our first week but with confidence, skills, and enough knowledge.

LEARNING/INSIGHTS: Working as a delivery nurse can be a very fulfilling career. As a delivery nurse, you will be in charge of performing screenings during pregnancy and early labor and will also assist doctors during the actual delivery of babies. You may even play a vital role in the post-pregnancy care of mothers and their newborns. Dealing with various kinds of patient is not easy. It entails a lot of patience and perseverance. I learned to manage my time effectively especially during the morning shift where a lot of work has to be done. I learned to prioritize my patients according to their condition and needs. I learned to deal with people of different ages and with different attitudes. Sometimes, patients relatives could really be annoying but as a nurse, I have to do my best to understand them and give our support.

III.

ISSUES AND CONCERNS:

I only have little concern in the delivery room like there were no enough supplies that are available like the nasal cannula. The doctor ordered that the patient shout be put on oxygen but sad to say there was no available supply in the work room and ended up recycling the used item.

IV.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

I recommend that there should be enough supplies available in that area so that when emergency arises we are capable to provide the immediate care that is best for the patients.
