Q. 1

(a) How many classes for strength design of a steel section? What will be the basis for this classification? [9 marks] (b) Check a welded plate girder comprising two 650x25 mm flange plates and one 1500x15mm web plate as shown in Figure Q.1 could develop a full plastic strength. If not calculate what will be the reduction for Grade 43 steel with design strength of 265 N/mm2. [16 marks]

Q. 2

Design a steel portal frame with two pinned bases subjected to u.d.l loading as shown in Figure Q.2. (a) Use the equilibrium equations to calculate the reaction forces at the bases and bending moments at Eaves and Ridge connections. [13marks] (b) Design a bolted moment connection at the Eaves connection area to resist the moment. Sketch a general bolts lay-out scheme. The bolts used are M20 grade 8.8 with tensile strength of Py = 780 N/mm2. [12marks] TOTAL 25 MARKS

Q. 3

A reinforced concrete water tank with overall sizes of 6.0m x6.0m x 5.0m as shown in Figure Q.3 is to be constructed with underside of the floor at level 4.5 m below ground level. Walls and floors are 300 mm thick. Ground water level is 0.5 m below ground. Concrete density is 24 kN/m3. (a) Check stability of the tank against flotation with the factor of safety (F.O.S) taken as 1.1. [12marks] (b) If heel slabs (as indicated by the dotted lines) placed at the base floor with the same thickness of 300 mm and width of 0.5m are added outside to the ground floor. Check the stability with the same F.O.S. The density of the gravel above the heel slab is taken as 20 kN/m3. [13 marks]
