August 22, 1973 CGMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY, REAR DIFFUSER SEALS-REWORK PLANNING RJFORMATION: EFFECTlVITYz All 250-C20 Compressor Assemblies prior to S/N CAC31600 (approximately). , All 250-B17 Compressor Assemblies prior to S/N CAC60029 (approximately). REASONz The tier and outer threaded insert air seals in the rear diffuser have a tendency for the silver abradable material to separate from the steel frame. A new diffuser has been released that incorporates integral aluminized seals in place of the insert-type seals. This CEB provides a method of reworking the old diffusers to a configuration similar to that of the new diffuser. DESCRIPTIONz The threaded insert seals are permanently installed in the rear diffuser. The silver coating is machined off and aluminum coating is applied and then machined to obtain desired labyrinth seal clearance. To be accomplished no later than next overhaul. FAA-DER Approved

COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY, REAR DIFFUSER SEALS-REWORK ACCOMPLISRMENT I. INSTRUCTIONS

Inspect P/N 6870814 and P/N 6870815 Seals in P/N 6871489 Rear Diffuser for proper seating and tightness. Looseness of the seal in the threaded bore is not permissible. A. If seals are loose, tighten P/N 6870815 Cuter Seal to 200-300 lb. in. torque using T/N 6872728 Wrench, and P/N 6870814 Inner Seal to 150-250 lb. in torque using T/N 6872729 Wrench. installed, rework as follows:

II.

After assuring that seals are properly A.

Machine the seal surfaces of both the inner and outer seals to remove the silver coating. This machining must be done in the tightening direction. Drill four 0.062qVholes, 0.300 deep, equally spaced, on location so as to establish a thread interference to the outer seal. Install four P/N MS9105-03 Pins. Set pins below the surface ofthe holes so the openings can be peened over. Peening the holes closed will prevent the pins from coming out. NOTE: This pin retention is required at the outer seal only. for aluminum

III. w.

Process both seals surfaces per existing instructions spray coating abradable seal surfaces. Machine aluminum coating to following dimensions: Cuter seal - 3.825-3.824 Inner seal - 1.506~1.505 NOTE:

Vi A.

These diameters can be dimensioned smaller than print size to obtain desired labyrinth seal clearance. as follows: Reidentify as P/N 6887189

Reidentify P/N 6871489 Rear Diffuser Obliterate former part number. per AS478-2Dl or 2E.
