Burlingame Long Term Care Center Chapter February 2013

WORKDAY REDUCTION FOR CNAS PROPOSED/IMPLEMENTED

The Company notified the Union on January 25, 2013 of its intention to change the scheduled work hours for Certified Nursing Assistants from eight hours per day to seven and one-half. The collective bargaining agreement permits such a change, but the Company must notify the Union. Since union stewards have not been selected yet, Business Agent Nadia Bledsoe requested two former stewards,Halamako Lavaki and Jack Crockett to attend the meeting February 12th to discuss the change. We stated that just because the agreement permits the reduction doesnt mean they have to do it. Administrator Nora De Leon cited business reasons for doing it, saying that their other facilities operate with seven and one-half hour coverage. The change had been planned for February 16th, we got them to delay implementation until March 1st.

JOIN YOUR UNION!

Everyone at the facility should have received their membership applications at their homes. Please fill out both the green card and the white card and give it to either Bryan in Noras office, or directly to Tony in payroll. Anyone who does not respond to the letter within the 30 days will automatically be enrolled as union members as a condition of employment. But we would rather see those membership applications and support for the union! As soon as membership is determined and stable, union members will be asked to select a steward for each shift.

BLTC MEMBERS STILL ON COUNTY RE-EMPLOYMENT LIST

There is still some confusion about the re-employment list for the County. People have stated that the County has been offering multiple offers for re-employment to the same person. Those full-time employees who were laid off are on a re-employment list for full time jobs with the County. The Union inspected the seniority list prior to layoffs, and the County has been following the seniority list when offering full-time jobs as they become vacant to those who were laid off. However, laid off employees who had been part-time with the County are also on a separate re-employment list for part-time jobs. Therefore, a person could be offered a part-time re-employment opportunity with the County, turn it down and still be rightfully entitled to be on the full-time re-employment list. So, when it may appear that one person is enjoying multiple offers from the County, it is because they are appropriately on two reemployment lists.
