Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Jeremiah 1:4-10, 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, Luke 4:21-30 February 3, 2013 4 Epiphany Some of you might remember me speaking about the importance of social ministry in the life of a church. Some of you might remember my belief that without some sort of social ministrywithout reaching out and serving those beyond these walls...we become nothing more than an insulated, feel-good social club. Today Id like to remind us how important it is to be active in the world beyond these walls, because in doing so we respond to Gods love for us. Brothers and sisters, there is no doubt that weve been busy caring for and nurturing our own community members. This is good and important work, but the church also needs to look beyond itself. In response to Gods love for us, we must look beyond the needs of our own congregation, and toward the needs of the world around us. We need to be active in the world. We, as a church, should find ways to care for the sick, strengthen the fainthearted, support the weak, help the suffering, feed the hungry, and however else God is calling us to love our neighbor. We should to do it not because we are financially stable, but because it is what God gathers us together to do. God gathers us together so that we might go and serve others. There is no doubt that you are moving in that direction as a church. When people in need arrive on our doorstep, there is often clothing available to offer them, and occasionally even food. This is great, but only rarely do we go out into the world, as a church, looking for new ways to care for the sick, strengthen the fainthearted, support the weak, help the suffering, or feed the hungry. I pray that the leadership of Carlos Tenorio and the work of the social ministry committee will lead the church in changing this. Its a great first step.

Last Saturday we took another step as a church to respond to Gods love for us. Last Saturday 13 people from this church visited a community of about 100 families in Tultitln, where AMEXTRA runs a community development project. We heard stories from community members that reaffirmed the importance, and even the urgency, of the churchs faithful commitment to social ministry. The families in Tultitln literally live and work in a garbage dump. Houses have no running water, electricity, or sewage disposal. Many of the children dont go to school. It was a difficult visit, and it reminded us that if we can do anything to support our neighbors, we should. We are going to hear from some of the people who were a part of this delegation at the end of the service. Their stories should speak clearly about what we saw, and about how we might be able to meet some of the needs of our sisters and brothers in Tultitln. However it is that we decide to show God's love in this community, we should remember that we do it because God first loved us. This frees us to do what we can, regardless of what that might look like, because it grows out of Gods love for us. As we develop our sense of how God is calling us to care for the sick, strengthen the fainthearted, support the weak, help the suffering, and feed the hungry, let us do so out of love. Let us do so out of a love that is patient and kind, keeps no record of wrongs, does not envy or boast or dishonor others, is not self-seeking, or proud, or easily angered. Let us do so out of a love that always protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres. Let us do so out of this kind of love because, in doing so, there is no doubt that whatever we do will reflect the same divine love that we know through Jesus Christand thanks be to God for that. Amen.

LukeRske-Metcalfe La Iglesia Luterana del Buen Pastor Jeremas 1:4-10, 1 Corintios 13:1-13, Lucas 4:21-30 03 de febrero 2013 - 4 Epifana Algunos de ustedes me recordarn hablando acerca de la importancia del ministerio social en la vida de una iglesia. Algunos de ustedes recordarn mi creencia de sin algn tipo de ministerio social ... sin llegar y servir aquellos ms all de estas paredes ... llegamos a ser nada ms que alguien aislado, para sentirse bien como club social. Hoy me gustara recordarles lo importante que es estar activo en el mundo ms all de estas paredes, porque, al hacerlo, respondemos al amor de Dios por nosotros. Hermanos y hermanas, no hay duda de que nos hemos estado ocupados cuidando y alimentando a nuestros propios miembros de la comunidad. Este es un buen trabajo e importante, pero la iglesia tambin tiene que mirar ms all de s misma. En respuesta al amor de Dios por nosotros, debemos mirar ms all de las necesidades de nuestra propia congregacin, y hacia las necesidades del mundo que nos rodea. Necesitamos estar activos en el mundo. Nosotros, como iglesia, debemos encontrar maneras de cuidar a los enfermos, de fortalecer a los desdichados, sostener a los dbiles, ayudar a los que sufren, alimentar a los hambrientos, y como sea, Dios nos llama a amar a nuestro prjimo. Debemos hacerlo no porque somos econmicamente estables, sino porque Dios nos rene para hacerlo. Dios nos rene para que podamos ir a servir a los dems. No hay duda de que se estn moviendo en esa direccin como iglesia. Cuando las personas que necesitan llegan a nuestras puertas, a menudo hay ropa disponible para ofrecer, y en ocasiones incluso alimentos. Esto es genial, pero slo rara vez salimos al mundo, como iglesia, buscando nuevas formas de cuidar a los enfermos, de fortalecer a los desdichados, sostener a los dbiles, ayudar a los que sufren, o dar de comer a los hambrientos. Pido para que el liderazgo de Carlos Tenorio y el trabajo de la comisin del ministerio social, lleve a la iglesia a cambiar esto. Es un gran primer paso.

El sbado pasado dimos un paso ms en su iglesia para responder al amor de Dios por nosotros. El sbado pasado, 13 personas de esta iglesia visitaron una comunidad de cerca de 100 familias en Tultitln, donde Amextra ejecuta un proyecto de desarrollo de la comunidad. Omos historias de los miembros de la comunidad que reafirmaron la importancia, e incluso la urgencia, del compromiso fiel de la iglesia para el ministerio social. Las familias en Tultitln, literalmente, viven y trabajan en un vertedero de basura. Las casas no tienen agua, electricidad o alcantarillado. Muchos de los nios no van a la escuela. Fue una visita difcil, y nos record que si podemos hacer algo para apoyar a nuestro prjimo, debemos hacerlo. Vamos a escuchar a algunas de las personas que formaron parte de esta delegacin, al final del servicio. Sus historias deben hablar con claridad acerca de lo que vimos, y sobre la forma en que podra ser capaz de satisfacer algunas de las necesidades de nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Tultitlan. No obstante, decidimos mostrar el amor de Dios en esta comunidad, debemos recordar que lo que hacemos es porque Dios nos am primero. Esto nos libera para hacer lo que podamos, independientemente de lo que podra parecer, porque nace del amor de Dios por nosotros. A medida que desarrollamos nuestro sentido de cmo Dios nos llama a cuidar a los enfermos, fortalecer los desdichados, sostener a los dbiles, ayudar a los que sufren, y alimentar a los hambrientos, vamos a hacerlo por amor. Lo hacemos por amor que es paciente y bondadoso, no guarda rencor, no es envidioso ni se jacta o deshonra a los dems, no es egosta, ni orgulloso ni se enoja fcilmente. Lo hacemos por amor que siempre protege, confa, espera y persevera. Hagmoslo de esta clase de amor, ya que, al hacerlo, no hay duda de que todo lo que hagamos va a reflejar el mismo amor divino que conocemos a travs de Jesucristo ... y gracias a Dios por eso. Amen.
