SUBMITTED TO Prof. Satish Menon

SUBMITTED BYChiranjaya Biswal MBA 2012-14 PROV/12/101 12010121088 (Marketing- B)

Green technology is the development and application of products, equipment and systems used to conserve the natural environment and resources, which minimizes and reduces the negative impact of human activities

OBJECTIVES
It minimizes the degradation of the environment; It has a zero or low green house gas (GHG) emission; It is safe for use and promotes healthy and improved environment for all forms of life; It conserves the use of energy and natural resources; and It promotes the use of renewable resources

DESCRIPTION
WHY COMPANIES USING GREEN TECHNOLOGY The cumulative effects of the degradation of the Earths natural environment have increased the scale of the sustainable development challenge enormously. Provisioning for human life using the Current technology is expected to be increasingly infeasible as population continues to increase and the harmful impacts of human production and consumption multiply. Business as usual is not an option. An attempt to overcome world poverty through income Growth generated by existing

brown technologies would exceed the limits of environmental Sustainability. A global green technological transformation, greater in scale and achievable within a much shorter Time-frame than the first industrial revolution, is required. The necessary set of new technologies Must enable todays poor to attain decent living standards, while reducing emissions and waste and ending the unrestrained drawdown of the earths non-renewable resources. Staging a new technological revolution at a faster pace and on a global scale will call for proactive Government intervention and greater international cooperation. Sweeping technological change will require sweeping societal transformation, with changed settlement and consumption patterns and better social values. Practical application

Example of INTEL

Intel Policies and Practices for Conserving Resources At Intel, they continually strive to improve their operations and minimize the impact on the environment. They are the largest voluntary producer of green power in the U.S. (in 2008, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), and their commitment continues to grow. Their green power purchases in 2011 accounted for 85 percent of U.S. electricity use, up from 50 percent in 2008. In their view, a commitment to sustainability requires a broad portfolio of efforts. To this end, the vigilantly pursue new ways to reduce emissions and improve energy management through

conservation, renewable energy, efficient building design, and other efforts. Our commitment to the health and well-being of the planet influences every aspect of how we do business.

OBJECTIVES OF USING GREEN TECHNOLOGY

Investing in Renewable Energy

Weve been taking steps to address climate change for more than a decade. Weve reduced our greenhouse emissions and invested in renewable energy sources such as solar power. Since 2009, for example, weve been working with our partners to complete 16 solar electric installations at Intel locations in the U.S., Israel, and Vietnamcollectively generating more than seven million kWh per year of clean solar energy. Conserving Water

We consider efficient and environmentally sound water management throughout all stages of our operations. Weve invested more than

USD 100 million in conservation programs since 1998. This has helped us save more than 40 billion gallons of water over this time period enough to fill more than 60,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. To learn more about our commitment, read our water policy and our 2011 Corporate Responsibility Report.

Reusing and Recycling

Each year, we recycle a high percentage of the waste from our operations. This commitment goes back to 1971, and our employees continue to seek out new ways to minimize waste, reuse materials, and recycle everything else. Our efforts range from large-scale process improvements to the everyday actions of our employees. You can see an example of our commitment in this video of Intels resident dumpster diver. Building Facilities with the Environment in Mind

We apply Design for the Environment (DfE) principles to intelligently address challenges related to energy efficiency, air quality, water

management, materials recycling, and more. Whats more, we make it our policy to build every new building to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver level. Over the past two years, we have also been pursuing certification for a number of existing facilities. As of year-end 2011, we had achieved certification for a total of 18 buildings across five sites, including Arizona, Costa Rica, China, Israel, and Malaysia.

Environmental Health and Safety Policy

We design our products to foster a more sustainable environment while providing a safe and healthful workplace for our employees, contractors, and communities. You can learn more about our commitment to environmental health and safety (EHS) in the letter from our CEO Paul Otellini. Responsibility in Our Supply Chain

Our commitment to sustainability extends to our entire global supply chain. We work to improve transparency and promote corporate responsibility among every person and organization we choose to do business with.

CONCLUSION
Information technology has become necessity to human development but we shouldnt forget the needs of human existence provided by our natural environment. For real successful development of mankind we need to integrate manmade technologies with nature in a way that neither harms the other. According to a study, although 83% companies realize the global warming problem, still, 80% are not willing to make significant changes for the environment. But positive actions by technology giants like Intel and Microsoft in preservation of energy by developing new, more efficient technologies and the spread of awareness for environmental issues would help. IT manufacturers are designing products that are not only good for the environment but also more affordable, if not cheaper than current technology. From contribution of IT industry and awareness spread by environmentalist, including celebrities and political leaders, hopefully green technology will be the only technology used in the near future.

RECOMMENDATION
To solve the environment problem the company needs to keep few things in mind these are as followsTechnology leads to understanding Data collection, analysis, modeling, and 3-D simulation are just a few of the ways Intel technology is being used to help solve challenging environmental problems.

Eco-conscious management By helping companies optimize their operations, increase their productivity, and use fewer resources to enable better products and disruptive new business models, Intel technology is making business more environmentally friendly. Environmentally friendly buildings We apply Design for the Environment (DfE) principles in order to intelligently address challenges related to energy efficiency, air quality, water management, materials recycling, and more Technology that transforms thought into action Technology has many great benefits, including conserving resources and making industries more efficient. However, technologys ability to connect people, amplify voices, foster innovation, and make it easy for people to act on their ideas can be even more important. According to me all the companies should use green technology to prevent various issues which is been raised like global warming. Because of it the environment is being harmed.
