Kansas City Art Institute is a place for creatives to pursue their artistic freedom, growth, and expression. They can aim their future in any direction they choose. The base of our design and intentions lie within the passion and creativity found in the students, the energy and vibrancy of the culture on campus, and the depth and complexity of the art making process.

HIGHLIGHT COLORS
METAL
Sticking with Futura Medium Condensed, we created a feeling of modern sophistication that still has pops of personality. The main color if you will is the perforated metal. The green, magenta, and orange color are highlights.

Our site map is calling out our game plan. We have placed markers to indicate our exterior and interior moments for signage. Placing markers is places that are lacking in directions or moments that have been missed on campus. For example right in front of Baty house there is currently a site identifier, but it sits low to the ground and is easily missed.

We also added this map because 43rd and Warwick is a main intersection as many of the Kansas City Art Institute students live on Warwick. It also sits between the two intersections that house the two off campus buildings, in effect this intersection is very high traffic area that can help visitors find the campus.

MATERIALS & GRAPHIC CHOICES We wanted to use textures and colors that would adapt as KCAI changes and grows. The materials we are using to embody the depth and complexity of KCAI are perforated metal, painted metal and Plexiglas glass. The metal has a square pattern punched out for the perforation. We liked highlighting the color choices peaking out as a viewer sees it from different angles. From a distance the signage appears as one solid block but when examined upon closely youll notice that its not just one piece of material, but rather a layering of several materials. This reinforces the fact that nothing is as simple as it seems, which we can all agree is true in the creative process.

KCAI has a quite beautiful campus. It has a variety of buildings and adds to the diverse quality of campus culture. Part of our goal with our campus was to activate the space in which we reside in. Our method of making this happen is by applying way finding graphics on architectural spaces. Creatives have the ability to mold their life into a successful career in unconventional ways. This ability means we can craft success in infinite amounts of ways, which way will you let KCAI lead you? CLICK

The directional pathway signs sit in a concrete corners on campus. This is so that each of the signs has two sides of direction for accurate and effective way finding. The sign sits parallel with corner of the sidewalks. We wanted to place them in these parts so that they are easily spotted as well as it provides the opportunity to utilize two sides for a sign instead of one.

The arrows used on the building identification depend on the side of the building on which it is applied to. The ratio of the arrow to the arrow remains the same, however. For example.... CLICK

As most of us know, parking at KCAI can be complicated everyone once in a while. We wanted to created subtle markers that would be placed throughout campus on the streets. These streets being Warwick, Oak, and in front of Jannes library so that pedestrians can see a visual for how our campus stretches out but also that students will be parking on these streets.

PARKING PARKING
For the accessible entrance we created three different variations. Sometime the space or parking lot will call for just a parking sign, but then we wanted the buildings to be easily seen as well if in a car.

Convention here is spared and rather than sticking to the tall rectangular format weve incorporated a triangular shape. The to banners allude to a directional arrow that speaks, Hey, KCAI is right here.

No two pathways are ever the same in the creative world. What works for one artist may fail miserably for another. The essence of our way finding system for the Kansas City Art Institute is Dont follow the yellow brick road, CLICK instead build your own.
