81st AANS Annual Scientific Meeting Changing Our Culture to Advance Patient Safety Destination Guide

April 27May 1, 2013 New Orleans, Louisiana

Dear AANS Members and Guests, Welcome to the Big Easy!

We are proud to host the 81st AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, to be held April 27-May 1, 2013, in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. In addition to asking you to participate in this gathering of neurosurgerys best, we invite you to enjoy all that Nawlins has to offer. Springtime is always beautiful in New Orleans, and this years meeting brings the opportunity to partake in the citys rich culture, delight in its world-famous cuisine and enjoy the unique sounds of the Crescent Citys most talented musicians.
stroll through the French Quarter and the Vieux Carre, the original settlement of New Orleans and one of the oldest neighborhoods in the country. The Vieux Carre was established by the French in 1718 for its strategic position along the mighty Mississippi River. You will see stunning architecture, as well as balconies adorned with intricate ironwork, and courtyards filled with lush greenery, and fountains. Just north of the French Quarter are the neighborhoods of Faubourg Marigny and the bohemian enclave of Bywater. During your stay, youll likely notice the sound of hi-hats and horns piping through the streets. As the birthplace of musical greats such as Louis Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Connick Jr., New Orleans gets its pulse from jazz music. But the rhythm doesnt stop there. The citys many music venues feature brass bands, Cajun music, zydeco, blues, and the talents of indie musicians, as well. The 81st AANS Annual Scientific Meeting coincides with the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, to be held April 26-May 5, 2013. Find some time to steal away and enjoy the sounds of our city. On the south side of the French Quarter is downtown New Orleans, where a streetcar line runs down historic St. Charles Avenue. Stop off at the Garden District, which is set among magnificent live oak trees. Take in the views of gracious antebellum mansions and the historic Lafayette Cemetery #1. Then peruse Magazine Street, a world-famous strip of shops and antique dealers. New Orleans has made a fabulous comeback since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and we are proud of our resilience. Our joie de vivre is reflected in our everyday life. Were glad to have you during the 2013 AANS Annual Scientific Meetingan international event in a truly international city.

Founded in 1718 by French explorer Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, New Orleans is one of the oldest cities in the U.S. The citys vibrant history is apparent in its French, Spanish, and Caribbean influences. In fact, New Orleans diverse population and multilingual heritage are a couple factors that make it so unique. Even for a lifelong resident of New Orleans, the charm of this city never grows old. No matter how many times we visit the many historic areas, there is always something new to discover. I am happy to provide a few suggestions. Consider it lagniappe, a local term for a little something extra. Be sure to dine at a few of New Orleans fabulous restaurants. Some of the nations best chefs, including Emeril Lagasse, John Besh, and Paul Prudhomme, hail from NOLA and have eateries in the area. Influenced by pan-cultural traditions, our cuisine is like no other. And, of course, you cant visit Nawlins without trying the seafoodcrawfish, oysters, shrimp, and crab are the stars of many signature dishes. Have some beignets and a little caf au lait at the famous Caf du Monde, located directly across from Jackson Square. Then,

Laissez les bons temps rouler (Let the good times roll),

Garden District Grandeur

Saturday, April 27, 2013 8:00 AM12:00 PM Price: $59 per person
Walking through the architecturally phenomenal Garden District, you feel as if youve entered an entirely separate city from New Orleans as defined by the French Quarter or, perhaps more specifically, entered a different period of time. Although the Garden District was indeed once a separate city (Lafayette) from the Vieux Carre and was established during a later period, the fact that this neighborhood was created by a different group of people most profoundly distinguishes it from the old section, the French Quarter. During your stroll through the Garden District you will tour the Lafayette Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in New Orleans. From the gates of the cemetery you can see the lavish above ground vaults and tombs of the families that once lived in the surrounding Garden District mansions. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes for this walking tour.

Amid patios of profuse and entangled beauty, meet the specters of those long dead; the European and African branches of this Louisiana dynasty. Youll see this Creole world slowly come alive and tragically dissolve as they struggle through changing society, civil war, the birth of Jazz, and the Americanization of the city. From grand townhouses to simple cottages and original slave quarters, you will also hear about Creoles, Free people of Color, and slaves. You will relive compelling life stories of passion, devotion as well as rejection and denial through the life of the Locoul family, one of the most fascinating Creole families to have made New Orleans their home. Then continue your journey to view the historic dueling oaks of City Park, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Botanical Gardens. The tour then follows the crescent of the river to the Old town of Carrollton and the route of the St. Charles Streetcar. As you pass Tulane and Loyola Universities, you will be on course with Audubon Park and onward toward the Garden District, a once thriving sugar plantation. Sunday, April 28, 2013 11:15 AM3:00 PM Price: $99 per person
This Airboat Adventure is half high speed ride and half tour. You will travel at speeds up to 40 mph, and then slow down for unforgettable photo opportunities. The airboat will go where traditional boats dare to go. The tour will take you through the narrow canals and then out onto the wide open marshes for some fast paced fun in the bayou. Midway through the tour, the tour guide will hitch the airboat under a cypress canopy and give a historic and economic view of the bayou from pirate days to todays oilmen and alligator farmers. While most swamp tours go around the marsh, you will travel right through. Swamp guides take you deep into bayou country to experience the ecological uniqueness of Louisiana swamps. Luxuriant cypress, swamp willow and iris, sassafras and palmetto frame the verdant domination of egret, alligator, raccoon, blue heron, muskrat, and nutria. Comfortable clothes and shoes are a must and dont forget your camera. Any way you look at it, its an experience not to be missed! Transportation provided to and from the headquarters hotel and tour.

River Road Plantation Restoration

Monday, April 29, 2013 11:30 AM4:30 PM Price: $95 per person
Wonderful things are happening on River Road these days as plantation restoration is revitalizing an important portion of St. James Parish. First, you will view the newest addition to the River Road, Laura Plantation, whose reconstruction began in 1992 on the big house and continues today. Built in 1805, as a sugar plantation by the Spanish Commandant of Pointe Coupee, it was originally named DuParc. Since 1875, the lovely plantation has been known as Laura, named for DuParcs granddaughter, Laura Lacoul. Adjacent is a smaller Maison de la Reprise, built in 1929 as a quiet retreat for Madame DuParc. Eleven other outbuildings, six servants quarters, and two large orchards of pecan trees will make Laura one of the largest extant plantation complexes. Next, you will visit Oak Alley, probably the most famous of the River Road plantations. At the entrance to the plantation, blooming bougainvillea and fragrant magnolia frame towering columns and wide verandas. Imagine cypress floors polished by time, gleaming chandeliers, and gracious furnishings. Oak Alley boasts rose-colored walls rising magnificently at the end of an alley of 28 majestic oak trees. The birthplace of several early Louisiana governors, this home is southern graciousness personified. Transportation is provided to and from the headquarters hotel and tour.

World of Mardi Gras

Tuesday, April 30, 2013 1:004:00 PM Price: $78 per person
Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans date back to the early 1800s, and have forever set the mood of the city, joyous, jubilant, just waiting to celebrate! You will visit two of New Orleans most intriguing spots, Blaine Kern artists Mardi Gras World and The Presbytere Museums Carnival Exhibit. The Presbytere, originally called the Casa Curial (Ecclesiastical House), derives its name from the fact that it was built on the site of the residence, or Presbytere, of the Capuchin monks. It was designed in 1701 to match the Cabildo, or Town Hall, on the other side of St. Louis Cathedral. The Presbytere was then used by the city as a courthouse until 1911 when it became part of the Louisiana State Museum. Today it houses an impressive collection of rare artifacts integral to the understanding of the culture of Mardi Gras, from the mystery of the Bal Masque to the mayhem of the street parades. Next, you will encounter the actual site where the fabulous floats for Mardi Gras parades are built, as well as the props, sets, and decorations for the extravagant Mardi Gras Balls. Both in the theater and in the warehouses, mannequins display the elaborate costumes worn by the kings, queens, maids, captains, and other attendants of the Mardi Gras Balls. Transportation is provided to and from the headquarters hotel and tour.

In order for the AANS to obtain the necessary amount of meeting and exhibit space at the convention center and the hotels, the AANS must commit to a minimum number of guest rooms. If the commitment is not fulfilled, the association will incur significant financial penalties and have difficulty obtaining sufficient meeting space in the future. Unfortunately, this can have a major impact on member services and programs the association is able to offer in the future. The official hotels have been selected because they are in good locations, provide a variety of rates, and have consistently shown a high level of product and service.
