The Leiden Indo-European Etymological Dictionary Series publishes the results of a major Leiden University project identifying and describing the common lexical heritage of the Indo-European languages. Under the supervision of Alexander Lubotsky, an international team of historical linguists has for more than a decade
researched, collected and integrated a growing corpus of linguistic data. The data is published in a series of etymological dictionaries and will be concluded by the publication of a large Indo-European Etymological Dictionary, deemed as a successor of Julius Pokornys standard work published in 1959.
Etymological Dictionary of Proto-Germanic

Germanic is one of the best studied branches of the Indo-European language family. This new etymological dictionary offers a wealth of material collected from both old and new Germanic languages, ranging from Gothic to Modern Faroese, from Old English to the Swiss dialects. It covers the largest part of the Proto-Germanic lexicon, containing around 7,000 lexemes. A large number of words for the first time receive an Indo-European reconstruction, and, as a result, the dictionary offers a full implementation of the laryngeal theory. Special focus is further put on the internal evolution of Germanic morphology and its consequences for the study of Germanic etymology.

The Etymological Dictionary of Persian is the most comprehensive and up-to-date work in the field of New Persian historical lexicology and etymology, since the publication of P. Horns Grundriss (1893) and H. Hbschmans Persische Studien (1895). It synthesizes the achievements of Iranian, and Indo-European, comparative linguistics over the last century with regard to the study of the inherited lexicon of Persian. The dictionary covers the principal vocabulary of the Persian language attested in sources such as: Classical poetry, historical narratives, early Judaeo-Persian texts, medical treatises, mediaeval dictionaries (Farhangs), as well as its use in modern urban vernaculars. Included in the listing, moreover, is a sizable amount of non-Turko-Mongolian and Arabic lexemes, particularly borrowings from Greek, Indian, and Caucasian languages. Copious references are given to the relevant literature, whereby each lemma is supplied with an extensive bibliography. The lemmas are rendered in the original Arabo-Persian script followed by a transcription, and are arranged according to the Arabic alphabet. The indexes, a.o. include, a detailed list of discussed New Persian forms both in their original alphabet and in transcription, as well as the different languages. The Etymological Dictionary of Persian is a basic source for Indo-Europeanists and experts in comparative linguistics, as well as a reference guide for those researching and studying Persian languages.

This allows him to formulate previously unrecognised sound changes affecting Proto-Celtic, and assess the competing explanations for other developments. This work has far-reaching consequences for the understanding of the historical phonology and morphology of the Celtic languages, and for etymological work involving the Celtic language, along with implications for Indo-European sound laws and the Indo-European syllable. A major conclusion is that the laryngeals cannot be used to argue for an Italo-Celtic language family.

The Meaning of Korean Prosodic Boundary Tones

This book marks the first attempt to rationalise the meaning of Korean intonation, especially its boundary tones. Unlike other languages where various pragmatic and discourse meanings are delivered through the types of pitch accent (prominent pitch movement on stressed syllable) and the types of phrase-final boundary tones, Korean delivers the pragmatic/discourse meaning mainly by the types of phrase-final boundary tones. This is possible because Korean has at least nine boundary tones while other languages have two (or, even four or five if the boundary tone of a smaller phrase are included). Various examples are given that illustrate this three-way relationship, i.e., a specific meaning delivered by a certain type of boundary tone and a certain type of morphological marker in natural conversation.

The aim of this series is to focus upon the relationship between semantic and pragmatic theories for a variety of natural language constructions. The boundary between semantics and pragmatics can be drawn in many various ways; the relative benefits of each have given rise to a vivid theoretical dispute in the literature in the last three decades. As a side effect, this variety has produced a certain degree of confusion and absence of purpose in the extant publications
on the topic. This series provides a forum where the confusion within the existing literature can be removed and the issues raised by different positions can be discussed with a renewed sense of purpose. The editors intend the contributions to this series to take further steps towards clarity and cautious consensus.
Multidimensional Semantics of Evaluative Adverbs

Multidimensional Semantics of Evaluative Adverbs provides a multidimensional analysis for the lexical semantics of evaluative adverbs: nonfactive evaluative adverbs trigger a conventional implicature, whereas factive evaluative adverbs not only trigger a conventional implicature but also a conventional presupposition. This analysis proves to be more advantageous than existing analysis in terms of empirical coverage and explanatory power. With the case of evaluative adverbs, the book demonstrates how secondary meanings (e.g. conventional presuppositions, conventional implicatures) interact with primary meanings (i.e. main assertion, or at-issue content). For the first time, a three-dimensional formal language of conventional implicatures and conventional presuppositions is implemented and applied to derive the right truth conditions of sentences with evaluative adverbs and predict their projection behaviors.

Vagueness, Gradability and Typicality

The Interpretation of Adjectives and Nouns

This book presents a study of the connections between vagueness and gradability, and their different manifestations in adjectives (morphological gradability effects) and nouns (typicality effects). It addresses two opposing theoretical approaches from within formal semantics and cognitive psychology. These approaches rest on different, apparently contradictory pieces of data. For example, for psychologists nouns are linked with vague and gradable concepts, while for linguists they rarely are. This difference in approach has created an unfortunate gap between the semantic and psychological studies of the concepts denoted by nouns, as well as adjectives. The volume describes a wide range of relevant facts and theories. Psychological notions such as prototypes and dimensions are addressed with formal rigor and explicitness. Existing formal semantic accounts are examined against empirically established cognitive data. The result is a comprehensive unified approach.

Empirical Approaches to Linguistic Theory (EALT) is a book series that aims to publish high-quality works that are grounded in empirical data but at the same time advance theoretical goals. Deriving Nominals
A Syntactic Account of Malagasy Nominalizations

This book provides a detailed study of nominalizing patterns in Malagasy (Austronesian) and discusses the broader theoretical issues that arise from these patterns. It explores new and original fieldwork data drawn from the largely unexplored domain of Malagasy deverbal nominals. Offering new insights to long-standing puzzles in the derivation of argument-structure, referential, and clausal nominals, the book promotes a single structure-building mechanism, which allows nominalizers to attach at different heights in the clausal spine to derive nominals with different morphosyntactic properties. In addition, it provides a novel analysis of participant nominalizations, showing that they are derived through the same mechanism that derives relative clauses, and thus setting the stage for new and exciting research directions.

The End of Argument Structure

Edited by Mara Cristia Cuervo and Yves Roberge A central question in the study of language concerns the mechanisms by which the participants in an event described by a sentence come to occupy their positions and acquire their interpretation. The papers included in this volume explore current issues and re-assess generally accepted premises on the relationship between lexical meaning and the morphosyntax of sentences by confronting two competing approaches to this issue. A long-standing approach is based on the assumption that it is the lexical meaning of a verb that determines, albeit indirectly, the basic properties of sentence structure at the level of verbal meaning, including asymmetric relations, thematic roles, case, and agreement. An alternative approach claims that, to a large extent, the syntax itself establishes possible verbal meanings on the basis of the legitimate relations that can exist between syntactic heads, complements, and specifiers. Amharic, Catalan, Chamorro, Chukchee, English, Georgian, Inuit, Korean, Malagasy, Slovenian and Spanish, are among the languages used to provide empirical evidence and illustrate the argumentation.

In The Subjunctive Mood in Arabic Grammatical Thought Arik Sadan outlines the grammatical theories on the nab (subjunctive mood) in Classical Arabic. Examining over 160 treatises written by 85 grammarians, lexicographers and Qurn commentators, the author defines and characterizes the opinions of medieval Arab grammarians concerning this mood in the verbal system of Classical Arabic. Special attention is given to the prominent early grammarians Sbawayhi (d. ca. 180/796) and al-Farr (d. 207/822), who represent the Schools of al-Bara and al-Kfa respectively. The analysis of the grammarians views enables the author to draw several important conclusions and hypotheses on the syntactic environments of the subjunctive mood, the dialectal differences relating to its employment and the historical changes and developments it underwent.

The multilingual word atlas will consist of three volumes in total with some 500 onomasiological maps in full colour. Each map presents a topic or notion and its equivalents in Arabic as collected from the dialectological literature (dictionaries, grammars, text collections, ethnographic reports, etc.), from the editors own field work, from questionnaires filled out by native speakers or by experts for a certain dialect region, and also from the internet. Polyglot legends in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian accompany the maps to facilitate further access. Each map is followed by a commentary in German, providing more details about the sources and the individual forms, and discussing semantic and etymological issues. All quotations are in their original language. The maps mainly show lexical types, detailed and concrete forms are given in the commentaries. An introduction is provided in both German and English and an index of all lexemes in the atlas will be available. A Study of Exegetical Method and its Consequences for the Interpretation of Referential Incoherence

In prophetic and poetic literature of the Old Testament references to textual participants are inconsistent with regard to their gender, number and person characteristics. Oliver Glanz for the first time provides a systematic study of the phenomenon of participant-reference shifts. The study is restricted to the book of Jeremiah and reflects upon the methodological conditions that should guide the analysis of participantreference shifts. Focusing on computer assisted pattern recognition the research suggests that Jeremiahs participantreference shifts should not be understood from a diachronic perspective. Understanding the origin and function of participant-reference shifts rather from the perspective of syntax, text grammar and rhetorics proves to be more consistent with the textual evidence. With this insight participant-reference shifts no longer have to distort textual coherence.

The function of the participle within the Hebrew tense system has considerably changed between biblical and postbiblical Hebrew. This investigation studies the participle in the Hebrew manuscripts from the Judaean Desert, its formation, its usage, and its meaning, compared with those in other Hebrew traditions and dialects, especially the language of the Hebrew Bible. The biblical Hebrew tense system continues to be used in the Scrolls, while there is a clear difference between the tense system of the Scrolls and that of mishnaic Hebrew. This fact allows us to draw conclusions in the field of language studies; but it also provides us with a piece of the puzzle in our understanding of the sociology and religion of the Qumran community.

By Dong-Hyuk Kim In Early Biblical Hebrew, Late Biblical Hebrew, and Linguistic Variability, Dong-Hyuk Kim attempts to adjudicate between the two seemingly irreconcilable views over the linguistic dating of biblical texts. Whereas the traditional opinion, represented by Avi Hurvitz, believes that Late Biblical Hebrew was distinct from Early Biblical Hebrew and thus one can date biblical texts on linguistic grounds, the more recent view argues that Early and Late Biblical Hebrew were merely stylistic choices through the entire biblical period. Using the variationist approach of (historical) sociolinguistics and on the basis of the sociolinguistic concepts of linguistic variation and different types of language change, Kim convincingly argues that there is a third way of looking at the issue.

The peer-reviewed journal Indo-European Linguistics (IEL) is devoted to the study of the ancient and medieval Indo-European languages from the perspective of modern theoretical linguistics. It provides a venue for synchronic and diachronic linguistic studies of the Indo-European languages and the Indo-European family as a whole within any theoretically informed or analytical framework. It also welcomes typological investigations, especially those which make use of cross-linguistic data, including that from non-Indo-European languages, as well as research which draws upon the findings of language acquisition, cognitive science, variationist sociolinguistics, and language contact. Indo-European Linguistics is a full Open Access journal, sponsored by the UCLA, Department of Linguistics. Jewish languages are the languages spoken and written by Jews in their communities around the world. Among these are Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish, Judeo-Arabic, Jewish Aramaic, Judeo-Italian, Judeo-French, Judeo-Provenal, Judeo-Persian, Jewish English, Jewish Malayalam and more. Although these belong to a variety of genealogical language families, Jewish languages have common linguistic features, thus constituting a distinct field of research. The Journal of Jewish Languages encourages comparative studies across the different Jewish languages as well as in-depth linguistic and philological research of the individual languages and their varieties. The JJL promotes studies that focus on diverse aspects, such as the interactions of these languages with other languages (especially Hebrew, Aramaic, and the surrounding non-Jewish languages), sociolinguistics, translation traditions, and more. International Review of Pragmatics (IRP) is a new peer-reviewed international journal committed to publishing excellent research in the area of pragmatics and related disciplines pertaining to all aspects of human communication, verbal and non-verbal. It aims to provide a comprehensive and authoritative picture of the field, encouraging submissions rooted in different conceptions and perspectives originating in geographically diverse areas. IRP publishes full-length original articles, review articles and discussion notes. While subscribing to the general view that all meaning is necessarily contextual, IRP welcomes research reflecting different, often conflicting, views of pragmatics. It is a forum for papers that analyze discourse in its many instantiations (spoken, written; institutional, business, media etc.) through a pragmatic lens, but also for those which consider pragmatics itself a separate discipline defined by specific objects of investigation (deixis, implicature, etc.). The confrontation is supposed to establish how much explanatory power in pragmatics rests in its interdisciplinary and semiotics-based variations, as opposed to self-contained methodologies with precisely delineated scope of application. Thus, in the long run, the aim of IRP will be to maintain a vigorous debate leading to crystallization of the core concept of pragmatics, and to evaluation of its descriptive and interpretive capacity.
The Journal of Language Contact (JLC) is a peer-reviewed journal. It focuses on the study of language contact, language use and language change in accordance with a view of language contact whereby both empirical data (the precise description of languages and how they are used) and the resulting theoretical elaborations (hence the statement and analysis of new problems) become the primary engines for advancing our understanding of the nature of language. This involves linguistic, anthropological, historical, and cognitive factors. Such an approach makes a major new contribution to understanding language change at a time when there is a notable increase of interest and activity in this field.

The journal, which has been the main platform for Targum and Peshitta Studies for some time, is now also the main outlet for the study of all Aramaic dialects, including the language and literatures of Old Aramaic, Achaemenid Aramaic, Palmyrene, Nabataean, Qumran Aramaic, Mandaic, Syriac, Rabbinic Aramaic, and Neo-Aramaic. Aramaic Studies seeks contributions of a linguistic, literary, exegetical or theological nature for any of the dialects and periods involved, from detailed grammatical work to narrative analysis, from short notes to fundamental research. Reviews, seminars, conference proceedings, and bibliographical surveys are also featured. All contributions submitted to Aramaic Studies are subjected to peer review. While almost every script of the relevant languages can be printed, Aramaic Studies encourages its authors to provide modern translations of quotations in any of these languages for the benefit of a wide readership, including biblical exegetes and historians whose field of expertise is not Aramaic. The bibliographic section is sustained by the Semitic Institute at Kampen and the Peshitta Institute at Leiden.

Published in three issues per year, the Journal promotes original, innovative, and meticulous research on the history (ancient, mediaeval and modern), culture, anthropology, literature (textology), folklore, linguistics, archaeology, politics, and economy of the region. Accepting articles in English, French and German, Iran and the Caucasus publishes lengthy monographic essays on path-breaking research, synoptic essays that inform about the field and region, as well as book reviews that highlight and analyse important new publications. Iran and the Caucasus is edited under the guidance of an editorial board consisting of scholars from the region itself, as well as from Europe and the United States. It is therefore unique in being a scholarly forum in the truest sense of the word on a region of growing importance, and a treasure-trove of information otherwise hard to get at. Iran and the Caucasus is supported by the Caucasian Center for Iranian Studies in Yerevan, Armenia.

The journal publishes articles on the culture and civilization of the geographical area where Persian has historically been the dominant language or a major cultural force, encompassing Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, as well as the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, and parts of the former Ottoman Empire. Its focus on the linguistic, cultural and historical role and influence of Persian culture and Iranian civilization in this area is based on a recognition that knowledge flows from preexisting facts but is also constructed and thus helps shape the present reality of the Persianate world. Such knowledge can mitigate the leveling effects of globalization as well as counteract the distortions of the areas common historical memory and civilizational continuity by the divisive forces of modern nationalism and imperialism.
Founded in 1948 by Helmutt Ritter, Oriens is dedicated to studies extending our knowledge of the languages, literatures, and political, religious, and intellectual history of the Islamic World, Iran and Central Asia, and South and Southeast Asia to the nineteenth century. The journal encourages contributions concerning exchanges between all these regions from the Mediterranean to the farther regions of the Asian continent.
