(b) A vertical plate 0.5 m2 in area at temperature of 92C is exposed to steam at atmospheric pressure. If the steam is dry and saturated estimate the heat transfer rate and condensed mass per hour. The vertical length of the plate is 0.5 m. Properties of water fill temperature of 96C can be obtained from tables. (8)

Subject Code / Subject Name:ME2251 Heat and Mass Transfer Maximum Marks: 50 Time: 1.5 hrs. PART-A (5 X 2 = 10) 1. What do condensation? you understand by filmwise and dropwise

2) (a)Air at 2 bar pressure and 60C is heated as it flows through a tube of diameter 25 mm at a velocity of 15 m/s. If the wall temperature is maintained at 100C. Find the heat transfer per unit length of the tube. How much would be the bulk temperature increase over one metre length of the tube. (16) Or (b) A steam pipe 80 mm diameter is covered with 30 mm thick layer of insulation which has a surface emissivity of 0.94. The insulation surface temperature is 85C and the pipe is placed in atmospheric air at 15C. If the heat is los both by radiation and free convection , find the following. i) The heat loss from 5m length of the pipe ii) The overall heat transfer coefficient iii) Heat transfer coefficient due to radiation. (16)

2. How are the heat exchangers classified based on flow arrangement. 3. 4. 5. What is the significance of dimensional number? What is condensation process? Define Nusselt number and Stanton number.

PART-B 3) (a) Water is to be boiled at atmospheric pressure in a mechanically polished stainless steel pan placed on top of a heating unit. The inner surface of the bottom of the pan is maintained at 108C. The diameter of the bottom of the pan is 30 cm. Assuming Csf =0.0130.Calculate i) The rate of heat transfer to the water (16)

1) (a) A steam pipe 10 cm OD runs horizontally in a room at 23C. Take the outside temperature of pipe as 165C. Determine heat loss per unit length of pipe. (8) Or

ii) The rate of evaporation of water.

Or (b) In a double pipe counter flow heat exchanger 10,000 kg/hr of an oil having a specific heat of 2095 J/kgK is cooled from 80C to 50C by 8000 kg/hr of water entering at 25C. Determine the heat exchanger area for an overall heat transfer co-efficient of 300 W/m2K. Take Cp for water as 4180 J/kgK (16)
