Context
Industry demand is increasing for recyclable or biodegradable packaging, derived from sustainable resources, and the performance of which is equal to current conventional packaging. Major improvements in the behaviour of biomaterials are still required to achieve high-barrier, preservative and aseptic packaging/processing integration. In terms of performance improvements, new developments are ongoing regarding additives for biopolymers and intelligent packaging. Nanotechnology is one of the key methods to improve product functions and barrier properties.
