The Typeface

bold 18

Gill Sans, designed by Eric Gill in the 1920s, is the ultimate legible sans-serif typeface. It was designed to function equally well as a text face and for display. The typeface takes inspiration from Edward Johnstons Johnston typeface for London Underground, which Gill had worked on as an apprentice. Gill Sans rose to popularity after London and North Eastern Railway adopted it for everything from locamotive nameplates and time tables to publicity materials. Many brands use Gills Sans, including the BBC, Tommy Hilfiger, and Saab.

GILL SANS
the ultimate legible san-serif typeface
The Designer
Arthur Eric Rowton Gill was a British sculptor, typeface designer, stonecutter and printmaker, who was associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. He is a controversial figure, with his wellknown religious views and subject matter being seen as at odds with his sexual and paraphiliac behaviour and erotic art. Gill was named Royal Designer for Industry, the highest British award for designers, by the Royal Society of Arts. He also became a founder-member of the newly established Faculty of The Royal Designers for Industry.
