MODAL AUXILIARY VERB

Auxiliary verb is placed 'in front of the subject to form a verb tense (present tense) voice (mood) and others. Auxiliary verb is a verb that has a function to help form the structure of a verb in a complete sentence. The modal verbs are:CAN / COULD / MAY / MIGHT / MUST / SHALL / SHOULD / OUGHT TO / WILL / WOULD 1. CAN Auxiliary verb can ( dapat,bisa ) used to show abbility ( kemampuan ) or capacity ( kapasitas ) Example: He can swim across the lake (Ia dapat berenang menyeberangi danau itu ) She cant translate English into Spanish ( Ia tidak dapat menerjemahkan bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Spanyol ) Can you swim across the lake ? ( Dapatkah ia menyeberangi danau itu ?) 2. MAY Auxiliary verb may ( mungkin,boleh,barang kali,semoga ) used to show sentence permission ( ijin ) and Possibility ( kemungkinan) Example: I may go now ( saya boleh pergi sekarang ) It may rain now ( sekarang mungkin hujan ) He may be the new major ( ia barangkali walikota yang baru ) May you enjoy good health ( semoga engkau sehat ) NOTE: In everyday conversation may often be replaced with can May I borrow your dictionary ? ( Bolehkan saya pinjam kamusmu ? ) Can I borrow your dictionary ? (Dapatkah saya pinjam kamusmu ? )

Auxiliary verb could ( dapat,bisa ) is the past tense ( bentuk lampau )of can also be used to demonstrate the capability ( kemampuan ) or competence (kecakapan ) and capacity (kapasitas ) Example : he couldn go to your office ( Dia tidak dapat pergi ke kantormu ) My mother said I could go now ( Ibuku mengatakan saya dapat pergi sekarang ) 4.MIGHT Auxiliary verb Might ( boleh,mungkin,barangkali,semoga ) the past tense ( bentuk lampau )of can also be used to demonstrate the permission ( ijin ) and sentence possibility ( kemampuan ) Example: He might take a course in writing ( ia mungkin akan mengikuti pelajaran mengarang ) Might I borrow your pen ? ( Bolehkah saya meminjam penamu? ) NOTE : In form persent tense auxiliary verb implies fewer or less than can and may Meaning I could go still has doubts (not so sure to go) while I can go over to contain certainty Ex : It might rain tomorrow morning It mayt rain tomorrow morning Sense it might rain means less likely to rain while it may rain rains likely to contain the moisture content 5. MUST Auxiliary verb must ( harus,mesti,pasti ) used to show necessity ( keperluan ) or obligation ( keharusan ) or determination ( ketetapan hati ) Example : We must obey our parents ( Kita harus mematuhi kedua orang tua kita He must have missed the bus ( Ia pasti ketinggalan bis ) 6. OUGHT

Auxiliary verb ought ( sebaiknya,seharusnya ) used to show sentence desirebility ( keinginan ) and strong probability ( kemungkinan yang kuat ) Example : I ought to go to hid house now ( Saya sebaiknya pergi ke rumahnya sekarang ) The football team ought to win ( Kesebelasan sepakbola itu harus menang) NOTE : difference between the ought is a matter must obligation. Must show a must while ouhgt shows that should 7. SHALL Auxiliary verb shall ( akan, boleh, dapat ) used to first person to show future. Example : I shant go to his birstday party ( saya tidak akan pergi ke pesta ulang tahunnya ) I shall be thirty next year ( saya akan berumur 13 tahun tahun depan ) If shall used to second person and third person it shall show a command ( perintah ) promise ( promise ) and the threat ( ancaman ) NOTE : In more modern English use the auxiliary verb forms wiil for all actors (the first, second and third) 7. SHOULD Auxiliary verb should ( akan,seharusnya,sebaiknya ) is past tense (bentuk lampau) from shall used to show duty ( tugas ), obligation ( kewajiban) and suspostion ( perkiraan ) Example : You should keep your secret ( kau seharusnya menjaga rahasia ) If it should rain,he will not come ( jika hari hujan,dia tidak akan datang ) Why should he suspect me ? ( Mengapa ia mencurigai anda ?) 8.WILL

( maukah kau dating ke rumahku ? ) 9. WOULD Auxiliary verb would ( akan ,mau ) is past tense from will used to show volition (keinginan ),characteristic habit ( sifat kebiasaan ) assumption (perkiraan ) invitation ( ajakan ) request ( permintaan ) Example : I expected that I would get a better job ( saya harap, say aakan mendapatkan pekrjaan yang lebih baik ) He would sit for hours watching the television ( Ia akan duduk berjam-jam untuk menonton televisi ) Wait a moment would you ? ( tunggulah sebentar ya ? ) NOTE ; Verb to express the request would be more polite than will Would you kindy pass the sugar ? ( Tolong berikan saya gula )
