How Farm Animals Live

Learning values
Exploring the world of farm animals Sorting and categorising different animals and their offspring Learning to notice and describe physical characteristics Counting to five

Recommended materials
9217 Farm Set plus hay, seeds and water

Vocabulary
Encourage the use of these words during the activity: Cows Pig Hens Horses Sheep Field Barn Stable Trough Grain Hay Tractor Wagon Fence and shed

Connect
Ask the children if they have ever been on a farm. Have they seen a farm on TV or in a film? What does a farm look like? What kinds of animals live on the farm? Ask if they know of any other farm animals? Have the children collect all the animals from the set and look at them. Hide the animals under a blanket, and then have all the children except one close their eyes. Ask the selected child to pick up an animal without revealing what it is to the other children. Ask this child a question (e.g. does your animal have feathers? Does it say oink? Does it give milk? Can a person ride on it? Etc.). Based on the response, try and guess which animal the child has chosen. Ask up to 3 or 4 questions if required. Encourage the children to play the game among them. Talk about how farm animals live. Explain that they are sometimes out in the fields and at other times they are kept inside.

Construct
Have the children create and build their own fields, where the animals are grouped by kind. Make sure the animals have something to drink and eat.

Suggested model solution

Contemplate
As the children build, ask them questions about specific animals. How many are there of each kind? Which is the largest animal? Which is the smallest? What do they eat? Where do they stay during the day and at night? And so on. Consider how much space each kind of animal needs. Encourage and help the children to describe how different farm animals contribute to farm life. Which animals lay eggs? Which animals yield wool, milk, etc.?

Continue
Have the children collect the pigs and build a pigpen for them. How many pigs are there? Do the same for the cows, the horses and the sheep. How many are there in total? Build a henhouse for the chicks. Ask the children to build a big barn where all the animals can stay together at night and during winter. Encourage the children to categorise and separate each species. Make sure that each animal has enough space for food and water and plenty of room to lie down.
