The paper contains 5 questions in one page. Each question carries 6 marks. Answer all questions. Start writing answer to each question in a new page. Answers should be brief and to the point
1. A harmonic oscillato.r made of a massless spring and 50 gm mass has a quality factor 200. It oscillates with amplitude 2.0 em in resonance with a periodic force of frequency 20 Hz. (i) Calculate the rate of dissipation of energy. (ii) If the energy dissipation rate is desired to be halved, what should be the amplitude of the periodic force, frequency remaining same? [4+2]

2.

(a) A glass plate of (n=1.5) is coated with a polymeric film (n=2). Calculate the coating thickness so as to observe (i) maximum and (ii) minimum reflection using a light of wavelength A.=SOOnm. [3] (b) Under the influence of gravity, a wedge- shaped film is formed when a metal is vertically dipped inside a soapy solution (refractive index = 1.34). A coherent and monochromatic light of wavelength /...=488 nm falls near-normally on this wedge. The experimentalist observes 12 fringes per em. Determine the wedge angle of the soap film. [3]

3.

(a) In a Young's double-slit set-up, one wave travels longer i '" ,..... ~ ,...... distance (see adjacent figure) than the other before they ~--~-~ superpose. What is the result of this interference and why? ~i\~1 Also derive the relation for the same condition. [2] I

(b) A Michelson interferometer is set for white light fringes. A mica sheet of refractive index, J..L=l.S is now inserted and held normal to the beam in the path of mirror M1 having compensator plate (thickness=2.0mm, 1-1=l.S) in the path; then white light fringes disappear. Next, the compensator plate is rotated and held parallel to the mica sheet. The white light fringes reappear again. From [4] these data, determine the thickness of the mica sheet. 4. (a) Explain why the displacement resonance does not occur at frequency of velocity resonance roo, but occur at frequency slightly less than roo. [2] (b) A harmonic oscillator having an angular frequency roo is subjected to a damping and is characterized by a quality factor Q. The oscillator is driven by a drive force of amplitude Fo and frequency wd such that in steady state the response x lags behind drive force by 45, i.e., the drive force reaches peak a little earlier than x does. If k is the effective spring constant for the oscillator, show that the response amplitude is [4] 5. A coupled pendula has the parameters: m=O.lO Kg, /=0.15 m and k = 5.0 Njm. Initially, the left mass is held at x1 = 1.0 em and the right mass at X2=3.0 em. The masses are then released simultaneously. (i) Calculate the normal mode amplitudes and frequencies. (ii) Hence write down the equation of motion of the left mass. [4+2]
