T
he Kardasen family had been actively looking for a dog for a couple of months.
They'd seen several on line at the Sonsini Animal Shelter that they thought might
fit in their family. "Our dog had passed away in May and we felt we were ready.
Besides, it was getting close to Christmas, and we couldn't imagine going through
the holidays without a dog," said Terry Kardasen. "The first time we visited the
shelter, I didn't even notice Benson," Terry said of the senior black dog. "When we
came back the next time, we saw him quietly sleeping in his kennel. The staff
person said that no one had shown any interest in adopting him and he seemed to be
depressed at the shelter." Terry and her husband got to know Benson and discovered
that he was a kind, gentle, obedient dog. "I told my husband that I couldn't leave him
at the shelter, and we adopted him," she told us.
In their home, Benson has been the sweetest dog they could have hoped for. He was
instantly grateful for the bed they had prepared for him, and he goes about sleeping
there often; it's his favorite hobby. He's house-trained, polite, and easy-going. "We
can't imagine how he got to be an unclaimed stray," Terry says. "He's such a well-
adjusted dog that I know he had a good home at one point." And thanks to the
Kardasen family, he's got a good home for the rest of his days.

Allen Harris, President of Berkshire Money Man-
agement, announced that he is offering a $5,000 re-
ward for information that leads to the arrest and
conviction of the individual or individuals responsi-
ble for the recent cruel and sadistic treatment of a cat
in the vicinity of Howland Avenue in Adams.
The cat, named Cleo, was found left to die in a
makeshift setup to hang the animal. Luckily, a
passerby heard the choking cat, called 911, and saved
its life. This is a heinous crime. I recognize that
without some additional incentive the perpetrator or
perpetrators may not be brought to justice, said Har-
ris. I implore anyone who knows something, any-
thing, that may be helpful to law enforcement to do
the right thing and report it.
Those with any information about this crime
should call Adams Police
at 413-743-1212.
Like many others, Harris said that he was absolutely
shocked and appalled reading the details of the des-
picable acts in Wednesdays Berkshire Eagle. Such
cruel behavior should not be tolerated, whether the
victim is a cat, dog or any other living creature.
Harris and his wife, Stacey Carver, have been long
passionate supporters of vulnerable animals in the
community. They have dedicated time and resources
to several causes including Berkshire Animal
D.R.E.A.M.S., New England Basset Hound Rescue,
Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter and others. Carver
is a board member for Animal D.R.E.A.M.S. and
New England Basset Hound Rescue, Inc. and Harris
is a member of the city of Pittsfield Animal Control
Board.

ash & Wag, the mobile pet
grooming service regularly seen
rambling along roads in the Berkshires
in a big pink van now has a permanent
home in addition to its traveling one.
Robin and Joe Mallory, who live in
New Marlborough, have owned and op-
erated the popular mobile pet grooming
service since 2002. On February 16, to-
gether with business partners Michael
Kirchner of Pittsfield and Jonathan We-
instein of Great Barrington, they will
open a full-service grooming salon for
cats and dogs, themed with their trade-
mark pink color, at 389 White House
Square on Stockbridge Road (Route 7)
in Great Barrington. The husband and
wife owners of Wash & Wag say cus-
tomer demand was the impetus for the
decision to expand their business. We
havent been able to take on any new
clients because we are fully booked with
long-term customers on established
routes, says Robin, who is a certified
groomer with a degree from the presti-
gious Connecticut School of Grooming
in North Haven, Conn.We have a long
waiting list of people whod like us to
groom their pets. Now, new customers
will be able to bring their pets to our
salon at their convenience and, if they
wish, they can sign up for upcoming
mobile service when there is an open-
ing, she adds.
The Mallorys have hired two addi-
tional groomers for the new salon, Tara
Green of Canaan, Conn., and Maria
Nardi of Stockbridge, and plan to add
more staff in the future. We work as a
team and each
groomer has received
the same training to
ensure consistency of
technique and style.
Were all animal
lovers and devoted
pet owners and are
committed to provid-
ing exceptional serv-
ice for every furry
client, Robin notes.
She said that the cou-
ple and their business partners invested
about $40,000 in extensive renovations
and the purchase of state-of-the art
grooming equipment to set up the salon.
Wash & Wags services include sham-
pooing, nail clipping, de-shedding, de-
matting, puppy cuts and brush outs. All
of the products used are as close to organic
as possible and include Dr. Bronners all-
organic castile soaps and organic sham-
poos made in Italy by Royal Pet.
According to the Mallorys, plans are
underway for a pet shuttle service to
transport local dogs and cats to and from
their grooming appointments at the
Wash & Wag Salon, as well as the addi-
tion of a boutique area that will feature unique
and locally made treats and specialty items for
pet lovers and their pets.
Wash & Wag will host an open house
and grand opening party at its new loca-
tion at 389 White House Square, Great
Barrington (near Caf Adam and across
Route 7 from Price Chopper) on Satur-
day, February 16, from noon to 2 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public.
Dogs are welcome. Food and beverages
will be provided and the event will in-
clude giveaways and a raffle for a com-
plimentary pet grooming. Event
attendees can also have a photo taken
with their dogs in Wash & Wags deco-
rative pink claw foot bathtub with bub-
bles.
Following the opening celebration,
Wash & Wag Salons hours of operation
will be six days a week: Monday
through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
with extended hours until 8 p.m. on
Thursdays. Appointments may be

hen Liz Austin, Madeleines
daughter, first met Olivier, she
wasnt really thinking that this would
be her horse. Liz horse American Pie
had been her once in a lifetime love.
This horse, she thought, would be her
moms.
Madeleine had bred Rowillie, her
mare to Idocus, an amazing stallion that
she greatly admired. Rowillie was her
foundation broodmare, producing a lot
of nice babies. But, no doubt about it,
Olivier was the nicest baby she had
seen.
As a yearling, Olivier was the highest
rated Dutch Warmblood in North
America in his age group. Head in-
spector Geet van der Veen recom-
mended they keep him a stallion. They
followed the advice.
At four, Olivier went to the 100 day
testing for breeding stallions in Cali-
fornia. There he earned the highest
scores of any stallion for movement in
the long test: eights or higher across the
board.
As he grew up, Madeleine rode and
trained him, and Liz, as she grew,
sometimes worked with him too. Truth
to tell, she didnt much like him. He
was a big, strong stallion and she had
never ridden stallions before. She first
rode him when he was three and she
was 16. It wasnt a good match. Liz
says they butted heads. But, she had
to admit, he had spectacular pres-
ence.
Then Liz got the ride on another stal-
lion: Hero. She started to get a feel for
how to ride a stallion. You have to,
stroke their egos. she says. She showed
Hero in the Young Riders, doing very well
with him, really clicking.
Meanwhile, Olivier went to stay with
Pierre St. Jacques for a year, for train-
ing. He also entered his first competi-
tion. He won.
In 2003 Olivier returned home. He
was seven. It had become more and
more apparent that he was an interna-
tional calibre horse. He had, as Eliza-
beth says, the whole
packagemovement, temperament,
looks. And personality. Liz soon
nicknamed him Fizzy after a Mup-
pets character who was rather mouthy.
But Madeleine didnt need an interna-
tional horse. The horse had more tal-
ent than she needed. She encouraged
Liz to take the ride. If Liz didnt show
him, they might as well sell him to
someone who would encourage his tal-
ents. So Liz headed to Florida to work
with Jen Baumert, taking both stallions
with her. From Florida she would call
her mom to tell her how she was doing.
In the beginning, it was all about Hero.
But things shifted. Over time, it was
less and less about Hero; more about
Fizzy.
Fizzys character had captured her, as
well as his talent. Liz would walk into
the barn in the morning and whistle.
Fizzy would answer her with a scream.
The partnership that had started so
rockily grew and became stronger.
Fizzy would do something well and Liz
would tell him, Youre a superstar.
Well, if you think thats good, Fizzy
would say, then let me show you this.
Fizzy learned many tricks to get yet
even more attention. He demands com-
plete adoration as the only acceptable
form of attention. Liz bought him a
squeaky toy and he was quite proud of
himself when he learned what to do
with it. Now if he is in his stall and
wants attention, he picks up his
squeaky toy and squeaks it. His ears
prick forward as he looks at you as if to
say Is this cute or what? When Liz
returned north, she and Fizzy were
doing Third Level. Feeling that many
young horses are pushed too fast and
too
hard, Liz took things slowly with Fizzy.
The most important thing for her was
for her horse to be happy and confident.
Liz says, He makes me smile every
day, hes so much fun. The feeling I get
when I ride him makes my eyes light up.

W
hen I was a young girl, we had an
amazing presentation come to
one of my classes. A man came to our
school to teach us all about different an-
imal species and even brought live ani-
mals with him. I remember looking up
at the presenter, knowing that what he
was doing was what I wanted to do for
the rest of my life. I strongly believe (to
the point of doing psychology projects
on the subject in college) that students
learn far more from seeing a live repre-
sentation of the animal world than a
picture or anecdote alone can teach them.
A big part of my dream came true dur-
ing a summer spent working as Kennel
Staff at the Berkshire Humane Society,
a wonderful non-profit shelter based in
Pittsfield Massachusetts. This dream
started by speaking with Karen Karl-
berg, the Director of Education and
Childrens Programing at the Humane
Society. Karen knew that I had a strong
interest in reptiles and she needed a pre-
senter for a few weeks during the sum-
mer for Camp Humane; a five-week
camp designed as a nature and humane
animal care educational program for
children from 3rd-8th grade. We
worked out a plan for me to bring in my
reptiles and present to the children so
that they could learn about species that
they might not otherwise have learned about.
On my first scheduled presentation I
nervously began my lesson, one that I
had tediously planned since we had first
spoken about it, and as I saw the smiles
and the interest rise in each child I
began to relax and enjoy the experience
immensely. At the end of each individ-
ual speech, I would allow children to
hold or pet my reptiles, under my close
watch, as I showed them more about the
anatomy relating to the species and an-
swered their questions.
After my first presentation ended I
knew I was hooked, I loved every as-
pect of teaching children through rep-
tiles. As each show progressed and I
became more comfortable with the rou-
tine, I fell more and more in love with
the idea of making this my career.
When I returned back to Unity College
located in Maine, where I am currently
studying Captive Wildlife Care and Ed-
ucation, I received an e-mail about a
leadership project that I could complete
for a certificate of completion, this proj-
ect would allow me to design my own
idea for community outreach through
education. I went in and spoke to one of
the directors of this project, Jen Olin- a
staff member at the Career Resource
Center of my college.
I presented my idea to do reptile edu-
cation at the local schools and she loved
it. We worked on it together and she
contacted local schools to see what their
interest might be on me coming to their
school to present. She got positive feed-
back from Albion Elementary School
and a few weeks later, I was doing
weekly shows for them as well. I loved
this experience equally and I continue
to do it every year here at college- in
fact I am planning this years lesson as
we speak.
This summer I will be pursuing my
dream even further as an education in-
tern at the Zoo in Forest Park and Edu-
cation Center. I will be giving live
shows with a variety of animals to
schools and libraries around Western
Massachusetts.
When Im not doing my shows I keep
up with reptile and amphibian educa-
tion through a blog I started almost two
years ago. This blog allows me to get
information about herpetological
species to people all over the world
who share a similar interest.
These educational opportunities have
opened my eyes to exactly what I want
to do for a career. I want to be the per-
son to inspire the next generation of
reptile enthusiasts, if I am able to in-
spire just one child in the same way that
I was inspired at their age; then my
dream has already come true.

decorating with pets
Lynn Wallace
T
here are many furniture options for
pet owners to be privy to when
shopping for a new upholstery set. In
my past articles, Ive discussed fabric,
leather and slipcover options that work
with all different types of paws, claws
and fur. Next, what should be under the
fabric? Are there types of cushions that
work better with pets? You bet! Cush-
ions can be attached to the frame or
loose. A loose back can be a scatter-
back, a knife edge or a box edge. The
most important feature a loose pillow
back can have is a zipper to get you ac-
cess to the inside.
SCATTERBACK
A scatterback sofa has more back pil-
lows than seat cushions. They allow
for a more casual look and are very use-
ful when getting comfy.
The Pros:
They can be flipped around, rotated and
moved to allow a more ample seating
or lounging area. This is a harder
cushion for pets to perch on and they
may deter your pet from climbing on
the back of the sofa.
The Cons:
These types of pillows are easy to
mush, BUT can be easy to un-mush
with a little fluff and puff. If they dont
have a zipper, it is more difficult to
wash and sometimes the corners can
get floppy.
BOX BACK PILLOW
A detached pillow is not sewn to the
frame back, but has a designated place
on the sofa. They can be a knife edge
(pointed corner s) or a box back
(squared out like a box). Again, it is a
wonderful feature if they have an inner
casing for the stuffing and a zipper.
The Pros:
To curb climbing on the sofa
when you arent home, they can
be removed or laid down on the
seat cushions. They can easily
be shaped again with a little fluff
and puff.
Cons:
If your pet does like to climb on
the back and you dont move the
cushions, the fluff and puff may
become a frequent ritual and it
can make the sofa look sloppy.
A SEMI-ATTACHED
BACK
A semi-attached back looks like
a loose pillow back, but it is at-
tached to the back.
The Pros:
These cushions dont move.
They are most apt to keep their
shape with only minimal fluff
and puff. A quality semi-at-
tached back will have a zipper in the
bottom and will give access to the back
stuffing. It may even have an inner cas-
ing that can be removed and restuffed.
The Cons:
If you have a larger pet that likes to
sleep on the back of the sofa, the seams
where the cushions are attached can
loosen or tear. To deter your furry
friends from hopping on the sofa, you
may need to block the path or put
something on the seat cushions to make
it harder for them to hop up.
Since there is no right or wrong
answer, consider your pets size and
personality to see what pros and
cons will be best addressed
in your home.

JULIE IS ONE OF THOSE GIRLS WHO
LOVES ALL TOO MUCH.........and gets jeal-
ous of other dogs stealing her owner's af-
fection. She would do best in an adult
caring experienced home with a fenced
backyard and no competion (dogs or other
pets) so she could give and get all the af-
fection and attention. Julie loves to play
with toys and people. She likes some male
dogs but is "too bossy"

Squeak came to Second Chance from another shelter after
being misplaced from Hurricane Sandy. She was brought
in with her sister, Shadow, so she gets along with most
other cats. Squeak has been through a lot so she can take
a bit to warm up at first, and can be independent at times.
If Squeak sounds like the cat for you, please stop by and
see her.

THE EQUINE ATHLETE:
PREVENTING & TREATING JOIN INJURIES
Yoanna Y. Matre, DVM, DABVP
hoof beat
H
orses are remarkable athletes, able
to perform a great variety of phys-
ical activities for our work and pleas-
ure. Like any fine tuned machine, they
are also prone to wear and tear and in-
jury that may affect their performance.
It is important for you to maintain
your horses ideal body weight and
muscle strength through proper nutri-
tion and conditioning. The appropriate
diet and exercise will vary with the ex-
pected level of performance. Dont ex-
pect to work at a desk all week and then
jump on your horse on the weekend to
compete over three foot fences or on
the summer barrel racing circuit!
Even with proper conditioning, in-
juries may still occur. Prompt diagno-
sis and proper treatment is very
important, as even minor muscu-
loskeletal disease can become more se-
rious if neglected or ignored. Subtle
changes in your horses behavior or
performance may be an early indication
of a problem. Swelling, heat, and pain
or obvious lameness may not manifest
until well into the disease process.
If you suspect an injury, stop exercise
and turnout immediately and contact
your veterinarian for an evaluation.
Applying cold water or ice to an area
immediately after injury can help re-
duce pain and swelling, but be sure to
speak to your veterinarian before ad-
ministering any medications such as
phenylbutazone (bute) or flunixin meg-
lumine (Banamine). While these drugs
are extremely effective at decreasing
inflammation and pain, they may make
it more difficult to pinpoint the source
of pain during the veterinary exam.
A thorough physical exam and lame-
ness evaluation combined with other
diagnostic techniques such as nerve
blocks, joint injections, and radiogra-
phy (x-rays) may be needed. Other di-
agnostic tools include ultrasound and
bone scans, which may require a refer-
ral to a specialty hospital.
Even with recent advances in stem cell
therapy and shock wave treatment, con-
servative treatments including stall rest,
anti-inflammatories, and controlled ex-
ercise are still the mainstay of treating
the injured horse. A rehabilitation pro-
gram should be individualized to your
horse's injury and intended future use,
as well as your available resources. It
is critical not to return the horse to use
too early, as incomplete healing may
lead to chronic changes. Osteoarthritis
is a progressive cycle of inflammation
and cartilage degeneration that once
started, can not be halted or reversed.
Phenylbutazone remains highly effec-
tive and relatively inexpensive for treat-
ing joint disease, and is available in a
variety of formulations including paste,
tablets, and powder. Other non-
steroidal anti-inflammatories
(NSAIDs) include firocoxib (Equioxx),
and topical diclofenac (Surpass) which
is massaged into the skin over the af-
fected joint.
Intra-articular (IA) injections of corti-
costeroids and other compounds such
as hyaluronic acid and polysulfated
glycosaminoglycans (PSGAGs) may
also be indicated to reduce inflamma-
tion and slow down cartilage degrada-
tion. These medications must be
administered carefully by an experi-
enced veterinarian using strict aseptic
technique, at the appropriate frequency,
interval, and dose to avoid catastrophic
joint damage or infection. Preparations
are also available for intravenous and
intramuscular use (such as Legend and
Adequan), and some studies have re-
ported similar efficacy. Products
should be FDA approved and adminis-
tered as the label directs under the su-
pervision of a veterinarian.
Feed supplements that claim to bene-
fit joint health are collectively called
nutraceuticals and may include com-
pounds such as glucosamine, chon-
droitin sulfate, avocado-soybean
unsaponofiables (ASU), methylsul-
fonylmethane (MSM), omega-3 fatty
acids, and more. Unlike pharmaceuti-
cals and injectable medications, they
are not required to meet approval by the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
for safety and efficacy. Independent
studies have shown some of these prod-
ucts contain little or none of the ingre-
dients listed. While they will likely do
no harm, they may do little to help as
well, while still being a significant ex-
pense to the horse owner.
When choosing a supplement, consult
your veterinarian and other trusted
equestrians for their advice on which
products are most reputable and effec-
tive. It is also important to note that un-
like NSAIDs and joint injections, the
pharmaceuticals in feed additives do
not have an immediate effect: Studies
have shown that products such as glu-
cosamine and chondroitin do not cause
a notable response until after at least
four to six week of daily administra-
tion. Be consistent and patient before
evaluating whether a product is effec-
tive or not.
Dr. Yoanna Matre is the owner of Berk-
shire Ambulatory Veterinary Services,

medical and surgical care to horses
and farm animals in Berkshire County

State.
If you suspect an injury, stop exercise and
turnout immediately and contact your
veterinarian for an evaluation.

this side of purradise
Iris Bass
A
new year typically starts with res-
olutions, often to do with diet or
exercise. As with humans, so with cats,
at least at Purradise, where last month,
the staff decided to become more proac-
tive about slimming down those cats
who arrive at the shelter in a state of
being, shall we say, a little too great for
their own good.
Of course, abandonment or neglect
often produces a scrawny animal, and
Purradise certainly takes steps to help
thin arrivees achieve not only a full
tummy but a shiny coat and overall
improved health. Results can kick in sur-
prisingly quickly, once those unfortu-
nates have had a few good meals.
But the overweight cat has a greater
uphill battle that some readers may rec-
ognize in themselves: Its hard to kick
those habits of not simply overeating
but eating the wrong foods...and, yes,
not exercising. And in a cat, just as in a
person, unchecked obesity can lead to
a wealth of health issues, from stress on
organs and joints to respiratory prob-
lems to diabetes.
The good news is that Purradise is on
top of this, too. The shelters large sun
porch, the Sunshine Spa, has since its
inception been the playroom for kitties
who enjoy one anothers company (as
well as the rooms cat trees and the mul-
tiple bird feeders safely on the other
side of its many windows). Now, it is
also the place where overlarge residents
are housed, to give them greater oppor-
tunity than even their multitier condos
afford, to climb and romp their way to
slimness...aided by a deliberate diet of
weight-management food.
When I visited Purradise on January
23, six-year-old muted tortie Isabelle
was getting the spa treatment, alongside
more active and buff companions Kate
and Shamrock. Isabelle was far more
retiring, checking me out for some time
from within a cat tree. When she
emergedoh, my, this was one big
girl! When she finally trusted me
enough to let me haul her onto my lap,
her plumpness was literally palpable
beneath her long fur.
Although she energetically licked my
hands, Isabelle resisted any notion of
active play. Too much effort, I suspect,
even with Kate and Shamrocks chip-
per movement to model herself on.
When I brought in a cat dancer toy to
encourage her to shake that booty a bit
along the tiled floor, she mostly fol-
lowed it with her eyes...and wouldnt
budge. In that exchange, I was the one
doing the cat dancing, not her!
Anyone who has ever made a fitness
resolution can surely empathize with
her situation. Its hard to break old
habits...but if you stick with the pro-
gram, you do see results. Hopefully,
Purradises regimen of the right diet and
greater physical engagement with the
other kitties and visitors will encourage
Isabelleand other oversize cats
who join her for the spa treatment
to discover how great it feels to be
fit. The ultimate goal, of course, is
not simply one of pounds, but of
years: to ensure all adoptees,
whether they arrive at Purradise too
large or too small, will leave the
shelter with the full promise of ful-
filling their nine lives in good health.
This series follows the special
human-feline bond at Purradise, the

T
he Berkshire Humane So-
ciety will being distribution
of spay/neuter surgery vouchers
on February 1st to help cele-
brate Prevent a Litter Month.
The spay/neuter vouchers are
intended to assist pet owners
who would otherwise not be
able to afford the important sur-
geries for their pets. Funding
for the vouchers is from a grant
by the Hamm Trust Fund. A ca-
nine voucher will be worth
$100 and a feline or rabbit will be for
$75 towards the cost of the surgery.
This year, pet owners will have 60 days
to make an appointment with a partici-
pating veterinarian hospital.
BHS will directly reimburse the vet-
erinarian for the amount of the voucher,
once the surgery has been performed.
After the voucher has been applied to
the surgery bill, the pet owner is re-
sponsible for the remaining amount and
any additional costs the veterinarian
may have to include. There is no cash
value associated with the vouchers and
the limit is two per pet owner. Once
those have been used, the owner can
obtain another voucher if there are any
funds still available. Vouchers are on a
first come first serve basis until the
funds are gone.
John Perreault, Executive Director of
BHS, says of the program, Weve
helped over 3,200 families spay and
neuter their pets since starting this pro-
gram over 10 years ago. He added, we
have had pet owners calling since early
January to see if BHS will have funds
available again this year. Shelter
Manager, Cheryl Truskowski, added,
Pet overpopulation is a huge problem
and can be prevented by owners spay-

I
f you want to know what's happening
at the Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shel-
ter, check out our Facebook page! It's a
growing community of people con-
nected by their passion for helping
animals. And it's a great place to find
out news about the animals too.
Staff member Amanda Rock is quick
to post stray animals who show up at
the shelter. On the evening of Monday,
January 28th, she posted a picture of a
black Labrador Retriever and the com-
ment; "Anybody recognize this sweet
boy? Found on Burns St. in Pittsfield."
Tuesday morning, the dog's owner, a
fan of Sonsini's Facebook page, saw the
post and picked him up right away. A
week before that, a yellow Lab was
posted, and the same day someone
commented "This is not my dog but I
know whose it is!!!"
You'll find helpful pet information,
such as tips for keeping pets warm on
very cold days, or how you can use
puzzle toys to keep your dog from
being bored and getting into mischief.
When the Sonsini's cupboard is bare,
people come through for the animals as
soon as they find out what's needed. A
recent post said "Facebook fans we
need you! We're running low on cat lit-
ter! Any help you can give us would be
greatly appreciated by us and our
lovely kitties!" Hours later, someone
replied "I will be in tomorrow with
some!!!" When battling an upper respi-
ratory infection going through the shel-
ter, the staff gave a shout out for a
humidifier and got four of them within
a few days.
You can find out what animals are up
for adoption at the shelter too. But
maybe best of all, people who have
adopted Sonsini animals share pictures
of their alumni, happily living the good
life in their new homes. That's more
than a little uplifting for the staff and
volunteers who remember those ani-
mals when they were homeless, wait-
ing patiently (or impatiently) for a
family to love.
If you've adopted a Sonsini animal,
we'd love to see pictures! If you'd just
like to be part of the action, visit us on
Facebook. You'll be in the good com-
pany of lots of animal-lovers who show
their support of Sonsini's homeless an-
imals every day.
