The Meaning of Advocacy for Families: An Introduction to Principles and Strategies of Advocacy
Presented by Jeremy Ward and Lisa Bridle Friday 22nd March 9.30 am to 3 pm Riverglenn Conference Centre 70 Kate Street, Indooroopilly
Unfortunately people who have a disability are not offered the same opportunities as others in our community and they often need people to speak up for them if they are to get a fair go. Families often must become advocates because their family member faces rejection, discrimination or low expectations. This workshop will help family members to find their voice, stand their ground, and consider how to be more effective in influencing what happens for their family member. This workshop, led by two family members who have experience in both formal and informal advocacy, will offer family and friends an introduction to the principles of advocacy and what social advocacy is and is not. Using practical examples, Jeremy and Lisa will also share advocacy strategies, and will discuss pitfalls, how to deal with feelings of emotional vulnerability, and how to stay focused on the best interests of your family member. Who the Workshop is for CRU is offering this workshop as part of a family leadership series but it is open to all family members. It is for parents, brothers and sisters, other family members, friends and close personal allies who want to learn more about how to speak out on behalf of a person with disability. About the Presenters Jeremy Ward is a parent whose eldest daughter lived with disability and required support to live in her own home, which she did successfully for over 10 years. His older sister also lived with a significant disability all her life. He has many years experience in disability advocacy, in the law as it relates to people with disabilities, and in assisting families to plan for the future. Jeremy was instrumental in the establishment of Queensland Advocacy Inc, where he worked for over ten years as an advocate, lawyer and director. Lisa Bridle is a social worker by background and works as a Senior Consultant at CRU. Lisas son Sean is 18 and she has played active roles within Queensland disability advocacy organisations since Sean was small. Lisa believes that advocacy plays a critical role in helping people with disability take their rightful place as valued and contributing community members and in safeguarding their lives and well-being.
