NACA Leader Fellowship

Overview NACA recruits fellows who will establish community-led charter schools that serve Native American students in New Mexico. During the one-year fellowship, leaders train at NACA to learn how to serve students through the preservation, restoration, and celebration of cultural and language, individual and community identity, personal wellness, and college preparation. The fellowship includes coursework in Indigenous studies, experience in the role of school administration and leadership. Fellows will research and study the charter application process and complete a charter application in 2014. Fellows will open a new charter school in 2015 in New Mexico. Fellowship Details Participate from July/August 2013 June/July 2014 Fellowship Salary of $40,000 for the year if the fellow holds a Level II Teacher License Directly apply learning from NACA to create a new charter school or lead a school reform effort in a traditional school or district Engage the Indigenous Education Network to share learning and coaching Create a strategic plan for opening and operating the new school by 2014 Establish key community partnerships and demonstrate local support of the new school Lead school duties at NACA that draw upon the applicants strengths and interests as well establish new skills and knowledge Applicant Requirements Must meet all NACA Employment Requirements Minimum of 5 years of experience as a teacher, principal or instructional leader Authentic commitment to community-led school design Strong organizational skills, verbal skills and writing skills Solid understanding of how to use data to inform decision making and instruction Willingness to live in Albuquerque, New Mexico for 1 school year Application Please submit o 3 references that identify applicant as a strong community or educational leader o A current resume and copy of most current teaching or administrative license o A 1-2 page person statement including: 3 outcomes you wish to achieve from this experience and how you apply your knowledge after the internship opportunity 3 strengths you feel you can share with the NACA community while serving as an Intern. Experiences Fellows experiences will include: observing NMPED Committee meetings, visiting schools that offer best practices to Native American students, observing and assisting with school discipline and climate, attending Governing Council meetings, participating in planning and strategy sessions, supporting community building partnerships, engaging in program planning and implementation, writing grants, observing teacher evaluations and being part of the Instructional Team, facilitating staff meetings and attending school budget workshops, among many others. Follow Up Participate in 4 Indigenous Education Network Gatherings/Site Visits in School Year 2014-2015
