Alison Ruoff Lesson: Unraveling the Mystery of the Intranet Time: 45 minutes Materials: What is An Intranet?

Presentation, Quick reference sheet of network terminology, and Intranet Scavenger Hunt Grouping: This lesson will be taught whole group with teachers working independently at a computer to complete activity. This should be done in a computer lab where there are at least 20 computers. Introduction: Often times in staff meetings or in district professional developments you hear in reference to documents and these can all be found on the district intranet site. This statement is usually followed by: Did she say internet or intranet? I think she said intranet. Whats the intranet? This lesson will help breakdown the basic information needed to understand networks and what an intranet is and why it is useful. Content Area: Technology Students: K-5th grade Educators Objectives: Upon completion of the lesson the students will be able to Access the school district intranet Describe what an intranet is Define the terms LAN, WAN, hardware, software, and network Standards: The following National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) are addressed in this lesson: NETS for Students 6. Technology Operations and Concepts-Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. a. Understand and use technology systems NETS for Teachers 3. Model Digital Age Work and Learning-Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. a. Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations Relative Advantage: Teachers will gain basic knowledge of how a network works. Once they understand the basics of how a network works, they will understand the reasons behind having a district intranet site as well as share information regarding networks with their students.

Learning Activities: Whole group-Watch What is An Intranet? presentation Log on to schools Intranet Complete School Intranet Scavenger Hunt Activity Assessment: Teachers will successfully complete the Intranet Scavenger Hunt Teachers will complete a brief assessment using Google drive to describe what the intranet is and regarding network terminology References: Joint School District No. 2 - http://www.meridianschools.org/Pages/Home.aspx A Guide to Networking K-12 Schools. Quick Reference Guide for Network Terminology

Types of Networks LAN Local area network, or LAN, is a network in which all clients share a common infrastructure (wires) and are usually in the same building, or group of buildings. WAN Wide area network, or WAN, is one that spans a larger geographic area. For instance, a network that links two or more LANs that are separated by some distance might be called a WAN. WLAN Wireless local area network Networking Devices Wireless Access Point (WAP) a wireless access point (AP) is a device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi, or related standards. The AP usually connects to a router (via a wired network) if it's a standalone device, or is part of a router itself. Routers A router is a communication device that is used to connect two logically and physically different networks, two LANs, two WANs and a LAN with WAN. The main function of the router is to sorting and the distribution of the data packets to their destinations based on their IP addresses. Routers provides the connectivity between the enterprise businesses, ISPs and in the internet infrastructure, router is a main device. Switches Like the router, a switch is an intelligent device that maps the IP address with the MAC address of the LAN card. Unlike the hubs, a switch does not broadcast the data to all the computers, it sends the data packets only to the destined computer. Hubs The central connecting device in a computer network is known as a hub.

Modems A modem is a communication device that is used to provide the connectivity with the internet. LAN Cards LAN cards or network adapters are the building blocks of a computer network. No computer can communicate without a properly installed and configured LAN card. Every LAN card is provided with a unique IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS (if applicable). An UTP/STP cable connects a computer with the hub or switch. Both ends of the cable have the RJ-45 connectors one is inserted into the LAN card and one in the hub/switch. LAN cards are inserted into the expansion slots inside the computer.
