Operation of SPV LED Lighting System The operation of the SPV LED Lighting System is very simple. The SPV module converts the incident sunlight into DC electricity. During the daytime, the green LED on the charge controller glows continuously indicating that the battery is getting charged. When the battery gets fully charged the Green blinking LED indicates the charging has been disconnected. The battery supplies power to the LED Light through the charge controller.

BENEFICIAL FEATURES Lower operative cost: It is less costly to operate solar powered LED than conventional lights. Lower power consumption: Maximum light output with lower power consumption. Improved safety: It doesnt require connection to electrical grid so even in case of power failure light remains on which in turn reduces accidents, thefts. Reduced Damage: By placing Solar technology directly above the fixture and batteries within the light fixture reduces damage. No Insect Swarming: The solar powered streetlight uses LED Street light, which does not produce Infrared light, and therefore will not attract insects. (No more moths and other flying insects swarming around the light.) Fast installation: As there is no wire trench to the poles from the power lines, it makes installation faster. A perfect GREEN solution. Important Components of SPV LED Lighting System: (a) PV panels These are manufactured from high-efficiency silicon cells and are IEC 61215 compliant. PV arrays must be placed to receive the most sunlight, as per latitude & longitude at Delhi NCR; a 28.2-degree slope to the panels with a south orientation is best. The 28.2-degree slope will help offset the shorter winter day by bringing the panels closer to perpendicular to the lower winter sun. There are several ways to mount the panels fixed, fixed with adjustable tilt angles, manual tracking and active trackers. For lighting application, normally panels with a fixed tilt angle are sufficient to provide required back up.

(b) T-GEL Valve Regulated Lead Acid Battery Batteries are essential component in a SPV system, where energy has to be stored during the day and used in the night, a typical application being the solar street lighting system. The battery type recommended for using in solar PV system is deep cycle and maintenance free battery. Deep cycle battery is specifically designed for these types of application. These types of batteries can be discharged to low energy level and recharges rapidly. However, deep cycle batteries should never really be discharged to below 20% of their full capacity, because internal resistance causes heat and damage when they are recharged. The charge controller used in the standalone SPV LED lighting system having low battery cut-off feature. It will cut off the battery at 20% discharge level of battery. The Battery used in our system is a sealed valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery. It is a deep cycle & maintenance-free lead-acid battery. The electrolyte is gelled by the addition of silicon dioxide to the electrolyte, which is then added to the battery in a warm liquid form and gels as it cools. Gelled batteries use an internal recombinant process to limit gas escape from the battery, reducing water loss. A gel battery (also known as a gel cell) is a sealed; valve regulated lead-acid battery and has a gel electrolyte. Even, if the battery container cracks or is breached, the cell will continue to function. (c) SOLAR CHARGE CONTROLLER Charge controller is an essential component of PV system; it protects battery from over charging and/or excessive discharge. It also has a day/night automatic detection via solar panel. (d) LED Light The Moser Baer 10W & 22W LED streetlight boasts of a simple design with Pressure Die Cast Aluminum Heat Sink & toughened glass secured together a metal frame along with an internal gasket lining providing IP65 protection. The light is powered by electronic driver with > 90% efficiency, which is separated from the light module within the fixture. At the heart of the powerful light output are LEDs from world-class manufacturers like Nichia, Philips and CREE etc with light distribution in line with various road lighting standards. Luminance (L): (Unit - cd/m2 ) : Luminance is a photometric measure of the luminous intensity per unit area of light travelling in a given direction. It describes the amount of light that passes through or is emitted from a particular area, and falls within a given solid angle. 3. Luminous Flux (F): (Unit Lumen or cd.sr ) : Amount of light emitted in all direction by a light source. 4. Luminous Intensity (L): (Unit Candela (cd) or lm/sr ) : Luminous intensity is a measure of the wavelength-weighted power emitted by a light source in a particular direction per unit solid angle. 5. Luminous Ef cacy : (Unit Lumen / Watt) : Lumen out divided by electrical input power. 6. Luminous Intensity Diagram or Distribution curve : A polar plot representing the light intensity as a function of angle about a light source. Blue line represents in longitudinal plane (C0-C180) and Red line represents the Transverse plane (C90-C270)

14. Power Factor (PF) : The power factor for a SSL is de ned as the ratio of the real power owing to the load to the apparent power in the circuit. It is also equal to the cosine of the phase angle between voltage & current drawn by the input of the driver from an AC source (often the wall plug in a house). VISIBLE LIGHT

CRI is the property of the light source that affects the apparent color of the object. For SSL a better index called Color Quality Index (CQI) is currently under development. 9. CCT (Correlated Colour Temperature) (K): (Unit - Kelvin) : The color temperature of a light source is the temperature of an ideal black-body radiator that radiates light of comparable hue to that of the light source. 10. LED Luminaire : A complete Light unit consisting of a lamp, Electronics (or LED driver) as required together with the parts designed to distribute the light, position and project the lamps and connect them to the power supply. Generally Lighting Engineers called this as a Fixture. 11. LED Module : A component part of an LED light source that includes one or more LEDs connected to the load side of LED power source or LED driver. Electrical, electronic, optical, and mechanical components may also be a part of an LED module. The LED module does not contain a power sources and is not connected directly to the branch circuits. 12. Self Ballasted LED Lamp or Integrated LED Lamp : A lamp with LEDs and integrated LED driver, and an ANSI standardized base that is designed to connect to the branch circuit via ANSI standardized lamp holder/socket. 13. LED Driver : Devise that is connected in between the voltage supply and one or more LED Load and which serves the purpose of driving appropriate current for the LED chips.

What is an IP Rating?
The IP Code defined in international standard IEC 60529 classifies the degrees of protections provided against the intrusion of solid objects, dust, accidental contact, and water in electrical enclosures. It consists of the letters IP (for international protection rating, sometimes also interpreted as ingress protection rating) followed by two digits and an optional letter. The standard aims to provide users more detailed information than vague marketing terms such as waterproof. The digits (characteristic numerals) indicate conformity with the conditions summarized in the tables below. Where there is no protection rating with regard to one of the criteria, the digit is replaced with the letter X. First digit The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects.
