FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY By Mo Armstrong As we come in to the beginning of a new year, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the new Friends of the Ozark Dale County Library Committee. Officers for 2013 are Kathy Kalina, Vice-President; Jennifer Whitman, Secretary; Elaine Potts, Treasurer; and myself Mo Armstrong, President. On that note I would like to thank the outgoing President, Elizabeth Babine, for all the hard work she has done for the last two years. Under her leadership, there were many great programs presented that enabled the community to take part in a variety of library activities. These programs allowed the community the opportunity to get involved and gain a better understanding of what the Friends of the Library do for the community as a whole. The Book Sale programs returned $14,145.51 to the library for various projects.
Mack M. Matthews School Jocelyn Ross-Rayford In 1965, the Alabama House of Representatives passed Joint House Resolution No 177, a resolution initiated by Mr. Steagall, proposing that the name of the school in Pinkard, Alabama, be changed from Pinkard Colored School to the Mack M. Matthews School. The resolution passed. However, in 1971, the name Mack M. Matthews School was removed, and the Dale County School Board renamed the school, the South Dale Middle School. Eventually, Dale Countys officials acknowledged that black men of exceptional ability and dedication who worked hard as teachers during very turbulent times in our state and country should be honored for their significant contributions. Thus, the Dale County School Board agreed that the school in Pinkard should be changed back to the name Mack M. Matthews School. On June 28th 2011 this historic school was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Historical Places. The school that was once named South Dale Middle School was officially re-named by the State of Alabama as the Mack M. Matthews School. It was given the name of an African-American educator, Mack M. Matthews. This was to acknowledge Mr. Matthews contributions in the field of educating the children of Dale County. It was the committee that formed to commemorate Mack M. Matthews educational contributions to the community of Dale County by restoring the Mack M. Matthews name, that also listed this school on the Alabama Historic Register. This committee, whose aim is to improve Dale County by working to spotlight Dale Countys historic sites, is headed by Gene Lynn. The committee may be contacted at 334-774-2995.
