CONTENT CENTER LOCAL INSTALLATION

Content Center for Inventor 2008 and 11

Side-by-side Installation
This document describes how to install Autodesk Inventor 2008 and Autodesk Inventor 11
side-by-side on a stand-alone (local) computer workstation allowing designers to work on one
release or the other with access to independent content libraries. The setup procedure
involves:
• Removing Autodesk Data Management Server 5 software.
• Installing the Autodesk Inventor 2008 and Autodesk® Data Management Server 2008
software on a local machine alongside Autodesk Inventor 11 software.
• The migration of Autodesk Inventor 11 and its Content Center libraries for use with both
Inventor 11 and Inventor 2008.
• Management of independent data libraries for Inventor 11 and Inventor 2008 in the ADMS
2008 Console.
Additionally, this document provides information to support un-installation of one or the other
product from a stand-alone system like:
• Removing Autodesk Inventor 2008 software and moving back to Autodesk Inventor 11.
• Removing Autodesk Inventor 11 and moving forward with Autodesk Inventor 2008 software
only.

Content Center Libraries on Autodesk Data Management

Server 2008
The Content Center uses the Autodesk Data Management Server (ADMS) as the data
storage technology for all standard content. The ADMS is the common data storage
mechanism for Content Center in Autodesk® Inventor, Autodesk® Vault, and other Autodesk®
applications.
Only one ADMS version can be installed on a stand-alone machine. If Autodesk Inventor 11
and Autodesk Inventor 2008 software are set up to use Content Center, then both must
access the same ADMS. It must be the latest version to support new technology. The
procedure involves removing the old ADMS 5 from the systems, and updating version 11 to
support the new ADMS 2008 functionality before that software can be utilized. This is
accomplished during the installation of Autodesk Inventor 2008 or by manually applying the
Inventor 11 Client Update for ADMS 2008 patch and re-establishing the connection to
the new ADMS. The new version of ADMS, ADMS 2008 can manage Content Center
libraries for both version 11 and 2008 of Autodesk Inventor software. Each Content Center
Library on ADMS 2008 contains a new attribute “Library partition.” The library partition states
the Autodesk Inventor version for which the library can be used.

How To: Install Autodesk Inventor 2008 and ADMS 2008 Next
to Autodesk Inventor R11 Software on a Local Machine
You must uninstall ADMS 5 or any earlier version of ADMS to ensure successful installation
of Autodesk Inventor 2008 on a local machine. Make sure that you create a backup of the
ADMS database before you uninstall ADMS 5. See the following section, Removing
ADMS 5, for further information.

1
CONTENT CENTER FOR R2008 AND R11 SIDE-BY-SIDE INSTALLATION

To install the Content Center environment on your local machine, you need to install
Autodesk Data Management Server 2008 and Inventor 2008 Content Center Libraries.
Inventor 11 Client Update for ADMS 2008 must be installed to allow version 11 Content
Center to access libraries from ADMS 2008.

Figure 1

At the end of the ADMS 2008 Installation, you are prompted to start the ADMS Console and
migrate the previous version of the ADMS database (Vault databases and Content Center
libraries). Depending on the size and number of databases, migration may take a
considerable amount of time. The migration does not have to happen necessarily at the end
of ADMS installation, but must be accomplished before you can access Content Center
libraries on the server from Inventor 11 or Inventor 2008. You can migrate the previous
version of the ADMS database the first time you launch ADMS Console. See the following
sections “Removing ADMS 5” and “Library migration,” for important information about
migrating CC libraries.

Removing ADMS 5
ADMS 5 must be removed to ensure successful installation of ADMS 2008. Note that when
you remove ADMS, you remove the ADMS software, but not the ADMS (Microsoft® SQL)
database which remains on the machine. The ADMS database contains the Vault databases
and Content Center libraries which were managed by the previous ADMS software. This
ADMS database is migrated and managed by the newly installed ADMS 2008 software.
To remove ADMS software:
1. Make sure that you create a backup of ADMS database before you remove ADMS 5.

Figure 2
2. In Control Panel > “Add or Remove Programs“ select Autodesk Data Management Server
5, and click Remove.

Figure 3

3. Do NOT remove the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (AUTODESKVAULT).

Note: The ADMS database must stay on the machine. The database contains all the
Autodesk Inventor and user Content Center libraries, which will continue to be used by the
Autodesk Inventor 11 software.

Library Migration
At the end of the ADMS 2008 installation, you are prompted to start the ADMS Console
(Figure 4). The default value for the prompt to migrate is Yes. It launches ADMS Console
when installation of Autodesk Inventor 2008 is completed.

Figure 4

The first time ADMS Console starts, it looks for existing ADMS databases for migration. The
ADMS database, with all the Autodesk Inventor 11 and user Content Center libraries, is
located and submitted for migration. The following prompts appear:

Select (Yes) to process the ADMS database migration into the new ADMS database schema.
Select Autodesk Inventor 11 and 2008 to migrate Content Center libraries to support both
version 11 and 2008 of the Autodesk Inventor software.

CONTENT CENTER FOR R2008 AND R11 SIDE-BY-SIDE INSTALLATION

Autodesk Inventor 11 Content Center libraries are migrated and left in the Inventor 11
partition so they can continue to be accessed by Inventor 11. Any Inventor 11 User libraries
are also copied to the Inventor 2008 partition so they can be used by Inventor 2008.
Libraries in the Autodesk Inventor 11 partition are available for Autodesk Inventor 11 only.
They are available for Autodesk Inventor 11 Content Center Library Configuration.
Libraries in the Autodesk Inventor 2008 partition are available for Autodesk Inventor 2008
only. They are available for the Autodesk Inventor 2008 Content Center Library
Configuration.
After the migration is complete, Content Center libraries are shown in the ADMS Console, as
shown in Figure 7. Inventor 11 standard content libraries and user libraries retain the library
names represented in the Autodesk Vault Manager on ADMS 5. Note that each of them is
shown in the “Autodesk Inventor 11” partition, which can be seen on the right side of the
ADMS Console dialog box.
Copies of version 11 user libraries are available with a prefix “AI2008_” added to their name
and are located in the “Autodesk Inventor 2008” partition. Additionally, all newly installed
Inventor 2008 standard content libraries contain the “AI2008_” prefix to their library names for
easy identification.

Figure 6

How To: Remove Autodesk Inventor 2008 Software and move

back to Autodesk Inventor 11
Once a library migrates into the new ADMS 2008 database schema, it is impossible to use or
migrate the library to a previous version of ADMS. Any Autodesk Inventor content
customizations or user-published content cannot be migrated back to be used by ADMS 5.
To work with Autodesk Inventor 11 only and remove Autodesk Inventor 2008 while continuing
to access newly customized libraries, remove Autodesk Inventor 2008 only and retain
Autodesk Inventor 11 connected to ADMS 2008.
If you prefer to work with Autodesk Inventor 11 with ADMS 5, then you must perform each of
the following steps, in sequential order:

How To: Uninstall ADMS 2008 and Remove ADMS 2008 (SQL) instance
Removing the ADMS (SQL) instance prior to uninstalling the ADMS software will result in a
non-functional ADMS and may result in serious complication when uninstalling ADMS
software. Make sure you follow the order of steps described below.

1. Start ADMS Console and create a backup.

2. Delete all Vault database and Content Center libraries. Right-click a Vault database
or a Content Center library and select Delete from the context menu. The database
files are physically deleted.
3. Close ADMS Console.
4. Start Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel to uninstall Autodesk Data
Management Server 2008.
5. Select the SQL Server 2005 component and click Remove. This launches the SQL
Server 2005 Installation Wizard. On the Component Selection page, select
Remove SQL Server 2005 instance components, click the instance
AUTODESKVAULT: Database Engine and then click Next.

The list of SQL instances may display SQL instances that were installed and are
used by different software on your machine. You must remove the
AUTODESKVAULT: Database Engine only. Removing any other SQL instances may
harm the software that uses the SQL instance.
