SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT NOTE We use a singular verb for a singular subject. Nora lives in Slim River. E.g.

Singular/Plural Verbs

Nora : singular subject lives : singular verb (the verb has an 's') SINGULAR VERB Use the singular verb when : 1 the following expressions are used Examples: each, every, one of, much, someone anything, anybody 2 uncountable and abstract nouns are used Examples: information, knowledge, equipment homework, advice, traffic 3 the following expressions are used Examples : with, including, as well as, in addition to, together with 4 a plural noun shows a fixed amount considered as a whole, such as time, distance or money 5 used with subjects which may look plural Examples: Physics, Mathematics, aerobics, arthritis 6 used with nouns joined by 'and' but referring to one thing or person. EXAMPLES * Each student is required to bring RM1 for the camp. * Much has been done for the poor people in this town.

* Clean water is hard to come by nowadays. * Fame has made her forget her roots.

* Tommy, as well as his friends, was hurt in the accident.

* Two hundred kilometres is a long drive. * The RM200 T-shirt is too expensive for me. * Mathematics is an important subject for all students. * Arthritis is a painful affliction.

* Fish and chips is very popular in this restaurant.

PLURAL VERB 1 Use a plural verb when : two or more subjects are joined by and' 2 the following collective nouns are used : cattle, police, youth, people 3 used with 'a number of'

EXAMPLES * My sister and brother are always bickering with each other.

* The police are looking for the youth who broke into my house.

* A number of passengers were injured when the bus crashed into a stationary lorry. * A lot of things have been moved to the new house.

4 used with ' a lot of', 'the rest of' followed by a plural noun

SPECIAL CASES 1 For 'eitheror' or 'neithernor', the verb should agree with the subject nearer to it.

EXAMPLES * Neither Chong Min nor the girls are coming to the party. * Either the girls or John has taken my book. * The committee have decided to publish my article in the next issue (referring to a number of individuals.) * The committee has decided not to accept your resignation. (referring to a single entity).

2 Other collective noun such as audience, committee, the public, jury and government can be singular or plural.
