IFR Charts and Publications Introduction

As instrument pilots we need to know how to safely get from one place to another, in IFR we join highways in the sky to help keep clear of any obstacles and keep the process streamlined for ATC. To help navigate these highways and procedures when were near the airports, we use several different maps and publications. We must use maps and publications in order to safely navigate in instrument meteorological conditions, how will we use the visual way points from a sectional if we cant see the ground! objective: student will learn how to use the maps and terminal procedures to aid in navigating safely, the instructor will use cross country scenarios to introduce the publications and maps. at the end of the lesson the student should be able to correctly identify symbols and correctly use the FAA IAPs, DPs [SID, ODP], STARs, and Victor Low Enroute Charts practically

Overview
Why we need these charts vs sectionals Highway in the Sky Talk to ATC less Introduce First Scenario flying from KCGC to KDAB- winds in area are from the east, use airport diagram, takeoff minimums, ODP to Ocala VOR talk about off route flying on chart, use T211 route from OCF discuss GPS routes, ILS 7L into daytona Introduce Second Scenario flying from KDAB to KJAX- fly out talk about radar vectors, then ROYES5.ROYES to explain using a SID (explain difference between SID and ODP, SID needs a clearance) to CRG and the the VOR 9R approach discuss how minimums went down now in our scenario so we got to use lower minimums so use the RNAV 9R Introduce STARs, use Orlando KMCO for area familiarity { If necessary to explain STARs or as a end lesson quiz use a scenario from KEYW to KMIA }

Student Actions

Student shall use prior knowledge and ask pertinent questions, display adquate knowledge of each chart as to progress to the next more complex scenario matter, observe the student in the discussion all the while asking questions to insure instruction effectiveness, if necessary add a third scenario from KEYW to KMIA to explain STARs or create a random scenario to help ensure understanding either with or without instructor help

Instructor Actions Instructor shall show how to use the IFR charts in a practical

Completion Standards

the student shall have an understanding of IFR charts and how they relate to navigation, be able to apply lessons learned to another scenario to be determined by the instructor if necessary
