3. Research Statements My lifelong program of research can be summed up as discovering, modeling, studying, and applying high-level abstractions for computing. Computing is in the midst of a paradigm shift from individual computations to interaction. Current techniques are woefully inadequate for network-based applications such as network management, ubiquitous information access and e-commerce, which involve a number of heterogeneous (independently designed) and autonomous (in-dependently operated) subsystems. The metaphor of interaction offers a natural, powerful conceptual basis for designing solutions for these applications. Mobile Agents are a powerful metaphor for autonomous, persistent computations that perceive, reasons, act, and communicate. Mobile agents interact to form multiagent systems, which promise a natural means for building complex computing systems in large, dynamically changing, networked environments. Besides its practical ramifications, the study of interaction has a deep intellectual component, which drives my research program. I was among the first researchers at IIT Roorkee to study mobile agent system in all direction namely: security, communication, fault tolerance, small panel for portable devices which excludes complete mobile agent system install on small devices, apply agent techniques in distributed e-banking, network management, and use ontology for heterogeneous mobile database access. My research at IIt Roorkee, UA, India, addresses key aspects of trust, conversation and protocols, compliance, and context. This work falls into two major themes, emphasizing theory and applications, respectively: Mobile Agent System: Demand for computing power continues to grow with the development of higher-end applications. Single processor systems have a theoretical limit on the rate of processing. Parallel processing provides solutions to raise these limits. Such systems include distributed systems, distributed object computing, and mobile code (including agents). The basic requirements of a mobile agent system is to provide an agenthosting facility for visiting agents and to transfer them to other hosts in their itinerary when requested, by using its transfer routines. The host must be able to communicate with other hosts, transport agent code and data over the network and execute it. A host with no features other than agent execution and migration, can still serve a useful purpose, since it provides access to the computational resources of the host it executes on. Thus, an application developer could parallelize an application and dispatch Mobile Agents to different hosts on a network for concurrent execution of the applications subtasks. Typical network centric applications, however, make more demands on the infrastructure. Agents need data files, library programs, network ports, etc for performing its task on a host. The application developer may also need to install higher level, application-specific resources, such as databases, transaction handling interfaces, etc. Therefore, the host needs to provide some mechanism for binding a visiting agent to its environment, so that it can access such resources. One aspect of the binding mechanism is the use of a name with which to address a resource, or other entity in the system. Each entity must have a unique name so that its owner and other agents can communicate with it over the network. Identifying an entity by the combination of its identifier and its current location does not fit well into the mobility of agents. Since an agent may move at any time to an arbitrary remote server, its current location is uncertain. Therefore, the architecture should also support location-transparent and selectable naming. The agent owner has no control over an agent, after launching it. Thus, the system must provide mechanisms to support the application's task of re-tracking its remote agents, checking their status, and issuing control commands to them remotely. Locationtransparent and selectable naming helps in simplifying the application developer's task in this respect. Agents need to communicate or coordinate with each other, for jointly performing an 7

application-assigned task. Thus, an inter-agent communication facility is also needed. Security and fault tolerance (persistence) are major requirements as well. There are several aspects of security and fault tolerance that affect the design of mobile agent architecture. For example, when two agents communicate, or merely coexist on one host, they should be protected from tampering each other. Thus, the architecture needs to provide isolated protection domains in which to execute agents. Similarly, when a binding is set up between an agent and a resource, it must be controlled in some manner, so that the agent cannot abuse the resource. An access control mechanism is therefore necessary. Authorization of resource access is usually based on agent owner identities. Thus, authentication of agent ownership is required. The host must be able to identify the protection domain that is attempting to use a resource, and determine the corresponding authority and its privileges. I have developed PMADE (Platform for Mobile Agent Distribution and Execution) in the direction of above-mentioned existing problems in the field of Mobile Agent Technology. Networked applications (e-commerce, mobile computing, network management): New applications provide a source of both inspiration and technical challenges for theoretical work. In this practical theme, I have created PMADE that provide testbeds for my different network based applications. PMADE addresses service composition and business process management (applying conversations and flexible protocols), service location and selection (applying trust and reputation mechanisms), and mobile applications (applying high-level context management). My research contribution in the field of Mobile Agent Technology is got due appreciation from the PhD Thesis reviewers (Professor from Indian Institute of Sciences Bangalore best institute in India and Professor from Florida University, USA). Fault Tolerance and Security to Mobile Agents provides new direction to World Wide Web (WWW), i.e., how efficiently a query can be processed over global networks in the present demands of Internet services by the users. I am currently expanding my research in Grid Computing, Cluster Computing, Mobile & Distributed Computing, Security, Fault Tolerance Systems, Peer-to-Peer Computing, Load Balancing, Distributed Databases, Data Security, E-commerce, etc.

4. Teaching Statements I view teaching as a significant and rewarding part of my career as a researcher. I have extensive experience in teaching as the instructor for a number of courses and as a teaching assistant for several others. Challenges in instructing graduate and postgraduate students for me is finding the ways to bring the students down into the nuts and bolts of the course and develop a system level design approach without squandering their initial enthusiasm from the higher-level discussion. I found that allowing breadth in their final thesis/project report, let the students explore any aspect of the topic of their interest while the tests and programming assignments provided a more hands-on working knowledge of computer algorithms in real life implementation. I look forward to use my experience at M. M. M. Engineering College, Gorakhpur, G. B. Pant Engineering College, Pauri-Garhwal, and M. M. Engineering College, Mullana, Ambala, and little bit at IIT Roorkee during my research at developing curricula to create new courses for both postgraduate and undergraduate students. I am well prepared to teach some segments of the existing curriculum, from introductory courses to courses in mobile computing, Databases, Computer Networks, and Data Communication. At the graduate/postgraduate level I have developed advanced courses in mobile computing, mobile agents in real-time systems, distributed databases. I am also teaching data structures, computer algorithms and introductory courses on programming (introduction to computer science as well as specific languages). Although these courses are outside of my research area, I believe problem solving within the context of programming is vitally important to computer science undergraduates /postgraduates /researchers. I had have the good fortune to work and study with some exceptional Professors at IIT Roorkee during my research, and it is from them that I have adopted much of my teaching style. I aim to make frequent use of examples and motivate ideas by placing them in context of both their applications and abstract generalizations. I favor a tutorial style of teaching that mixes lecturing with problem sessions in which students apply the ideas they are learning. This changes lectures from a passive experience to an interactive one and helps the teacher correct misapprehensions early on before the students tackle homework assignments on their own. A challenge in this style of teaching is finding appropriate problems in class sessions. For drill-like exercises where students learn to apply new techniques, I try to devise progressions of successively harder examples. This builds confidence and ensures that students of all levels are appropriately challenged. I try to be sensitive to the fact that students come to a course with different backgrounds and skill levels. The challenge is to coach weaker students while not losing the attention of quicker students. I believe teachers should be a source of encouragement in students lives, and especially so to underrepresented students. Finding a way to do this without making students feel singled out is a challenge. Showing sensitivity and taking opportunities to mentor students are unobtrusive ways to give under-represented students extra support.

10. Sponsored Research Projects Completed/in Progress S. No. Area of Research Project Title/Sponsoring Agency/Progress 1. Wireless Sensor I (Department of Computer Engineering) submitted Networks under the Research Promotion Scheme of the AICTE the project entitled Energy Efficient Routing Protocol Design and Implementation in Wireless Sensor Networks for Disaster Management for an amount of Rs. 15.91 lacs. Dr. R. B. Patel is principal investigator for this project 2. Routing and Security I (Department of Computer Engineering) received a in open Networks grant of Rs. 8.00 Lacs, under the Research Promotion Scheme of the AICTE for the project entitled Calibration of Routing and Security Features in Heterogeneous Networks using Mobile Agents in 2008. Dr. R. B. Patel is principal investigator for this project. Objective of this research project is to exploit the fundamentals of the routing equipments that more and more information can be observed and delivered efficiently through network infrastructure itself. The following three stages are proposed to conduct research. (a) Adapt PMADE infrastructure to heterogeneous networking environment using networking equipment. Such an environment can simulate unreliable, bandwidth limited network. Develop and characterize MA applications based on this environment. (b) Develop MA security features for applications developed in 1st stage. Analyze the way Application-Oriented Networking (AON) technology uses networking infrastructure to satisfy applications need for real-time visibility, security and optimized delivery. Propose how AON technology can be leveraged to satisfy similar MA applications routing and security needs. (c) Develop a prototype/simulated-models for integrating MA application needs such as routing and security into networking infrastructure. Summary of the Progress 1. We have designed and implemented a Group Aware Network Management (GANM) Protocol for WSNs. GANM optimally utilizes the closeness of nodes falling within a predefined diameter, called the grouping diameter (gD). The set of nodes which mutually fall within this diameter with respect to 32

each other can be allowed to form a group. The members of a group can be made to go to a low energy sleep mode, while one of the members remaining awake to represent its group. This protocol also enables a fault tolerant scheduling scheme among the group members such that there is always one member awake to listen to the surrounding, i.e., to sense and to transmit. This group is a black box for rest of the network and can be treated as a single node for any routing protocol applied at the abstract level. 2. A Fault Tolerant Energy Efficient Heterogeneous Clustered Protocol (FTEEHCP) for Wireless Sensor Networks is a clustering based protocol, which enjoys high power sensor nodes for power consuming task load and as a result extends network lifetime. In this protocol we have assumed an organizer node, the main function or duty of this organizer node is to monitor the operation of the cluster head (CH), and briefly speaking forms a fault tolerant framework for correct functioning of the sensor nodes. FTEEHCP is a modified version of the LEACH protocol. Simulation results show a better performance of FTEEHCP as compared to LEACH (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy). The LEACH protocol uses the idea of data fusion to reduce the amount of data transmitted between sensor nodes and the base station. Data fusion combines one or more data packets from different sensors to produce a single packet. LEACH forms a small number of adaptive clusters in a self organized manner. One node in each cluster is chosen as cluster-head to collect and fuse data from sensor nodes of its cluster and transmit the result to the BS. LEACH uses randomization to rotate the clusterheads and achieves a factor of 8 improvements as compared to the direct approach before the first node dies 3. Floods have always been a major cause of destruction from the past itself. In the manual river flow control system there is always a situation of the increasing or decreasing of the discharge available depending on the precipitation of the catchments region. With a blend of mobile agents, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and intelligent systems we formulated a new application to manage the water flow of a river by continuously monitoring the precipitation and correspondingly changing the position of the diversion head regulators (HR) of a 33

barrage. In the implementation of the system we have used the protocols shown in para 1 & 2. 4. We have designed and implemented a Multiagent System for Information Access in Distributed Databases (MSIADD). This system improves the performance bottleneck of distributed database system by decentralizing and replicating the database over the network. Indian Railway Distributed Database System is taken for testing the MSIADD. The experimental results have shown that due to network congestion, i.e., limitation of mobile agent environment, efficiency of system is affected. New Findings/Achievements of the said project is as follows: 1. 2. 3. A Group Aware Network Management (GANM) Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks. A Fault Tolerant Energy Efficient Heterogeneous Clustered Protocol (FTEEHCP) for Wireless Sensor Networks. A River Flow Management System using Wireless Sensing Agents is developed for managing the flow of rivers and diverts water to dry/less water fall areas. A Multiagent System for Information Access in Distributed Databases (MSIADD) is developed to improve the performance bottleneck of distributed database system by decentralizing and replicating the database of Indian Railway Distributed Database System over the network.
