What is the AVC ?

Vo c at i o n a l U p dat e

Collinsville Area Vocational Center (CAVC) provides hands-on training in a variety of professional fields. Instructors have real world work experience in their areas of expertise. The environment simulates a real work environment where students can gain the skills necessary to be successful in college, trade school, the military, and the work force. Senior and Junior students from Collinsville, Mascoutah, and Madison school districts attend classes for two and a half hours each day. The extended time frame allows instructors to immerse students in simulated employment situations. Students not only learn step-bystep procedures associated with their field, they also learn to work together, collaborate, and problem solve. In addition to advanced curriculum, qualified instructors, and a dynamic environment, many students have the opportunity to earn college credit from Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC). These credits are free and available as part of the students enrollment in many of our CAVC classes. Most of the credits are transferrable to other educational institutions and can save families thousands of dollars!

Building Updates Prepare AVC for New School Year Over the summer, CAVC has been a busy place! Many updates have begun to ensure students have access to the best facilities and the most up to date technologies. We are putting a continued emphasis on not only upgrading equipment but also maintaining a safe environment for our students, says Tricia Blackard, new CAVC director. The automotive shop has upgraded one of their vehicle lifts to ensure students are learning in the safest possible environment. An additional lift has also been installed to maximize opportunities for students to gain hands on experience. In addition to the installation of improved lighting fixtures in the auto body shop, plans have been made to install a down draft system which will pull particulate matter away from students while sanding. Further upgrades scheduled throughout the year include additional ventilation's systems for the automotive paint booth. Finally, a dual classroom containing computers and work stations has been installed in the engineering room. Grant funds secured at the end of the 2011-12 school year have made it possible to provide this new educational opportunity to students.
