Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10, 1 Corinthians 12:12-31a, Luke 4:14-21 January 27, 2013 3 Epiphany In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Sisters and Brothers, I have good news! Together, youare the body of Christ, and each one of you is an individual part of it. Regardless of how youve made this church your home, or what talents you have to offer, you are an important and critical part of this body. Whats more, this body of Christ is stronger because of who you are and your unique talents. I hope that you hear Pauls words to the Corinthians as words to you. I hope that when Paul writes about how God has placed the parts of Christs body just as God wanted, you hear those words directed to you. I hope that when Paul writes about how there should be no division in Christs body and how we should have equal concern for one another, you hear those words as instructions to us, as church. I hope when Paul writes about how, if one part of Christs body suffers, the entire body suffers, that these words resonate with you, because you have accompanied your brother or sister in their suffering. I hope you know that you are an important and critical part of Christs body. I share these hopes with you this morning because there are times when I wonder if we as the church universal really believe that we are all equally important to the life of this community. There are times when I wonder if we as a local church that proclaims to be Christs body really believethe good news that we are actually strengthened by diversity and unique talents. I wonder these things because it has been said that the most racially- and culturallysegregated hour during the week is on Sunday morning. Looking at the majority of churches in the U.S., its hard to argue against this. In some ways, it might appear easier to be surrounded by like-minded people who share similar backgrounds and experiences. It might appear easier to not have to fuss with another language or be culturally sensitive.

Im not sure if some of you share these questions with me or not. The truth is, these questions dont linger too long for me because, in many ways, you as a congregation live out the good news that we hear this morning. In many ways, you as a congregation have found a unique way to balance beliefwith actionto live out what it means to be a diverse body of Christ. Look around. Consider the different languages spoken here. List the different countries represented. Think about our different educational levels and socio-economic locations. That you function as a congregation with these many layers of diversity is clear evidence not only that you believethat each and every one of you is an important and critical part of Christs body, but you also live into this good news. It is in this diversity that you are stronger, because you are careful to make sure that everyone understands what is being saidbecause you take time to think about what is important and culturally appropriate to one another. You are made stronger in this diversity because in it, you cannot help but be more sensitive to including everyone. Brothers and sisters, I hope that you hear Pauls words to the Corinthians as words to you. Regardless of how youve made this church your home, or what talents you have to offer, you are an important and critical part of Christs body. Its because of who you are, and the unique talents you offer here, that this body of Christ grows stronger...and thanks be to God for that. Amen.

Hermanas y hermanos, tengo buenas nuevas! Juntos, ustedes son el cuerpo de Cristo, y cada uno de ustedes es una parte individual de la misma. Independientemente de cmo usted ha hecho esta iglesia su casa, o cules son los talentos que tiene para ofrecer, usted es una parte importante y fundamental de este rgano. Lo que es ms, este cuerpo de Cristo es ms fuerte por lo que eres y tus talentos nicos. Espero que usted escuche las palabras de Pablo a los Corintios como palabras para usted. Espero que cuando Pablo escribe acerca de cmo Dios ha colocado las partes del cuerpo de Cristo como Dios quera, escuche esas palabras dirigidas a usted. Espero que cuando Pablo escribe acerca de cmo no debe haber divisin en el cuerpo de Cristo y la forma en que debiramos preocuparnos por igual unos por otros, escuche esas palabras como instrucciones para nosotros, como iglesia. Espero que cuando Pablo escribe acerca de cmo, si una parte del cuerpo de Cristo sufre, todo el cuerpo sufre, que estas palabras resuenen con ustedes, porque ustedes han acompaado a su hermano o hermana en su sufrimiento. Espero que sepa que es una parte importante y fundamental del cuerpo de Cristo. Comparto estas esperanzas con ustedes esta maana porque hay veces que me pregunto si como la iglesia universal - Realmente creemos que todos somos igualmente importantes para la vida de esta comunidad. Hay momentos en que me pregunto si nosotros - como una iglesia local que proclama ser el cuerpo de Cristo - realmente creemos que la buena noticia es que estamos en realidad fortalecidos por la diversidad y talentos nicos. Me pregunto esto porque se ha dicho que la hora ms racialmente y culturalmente segregada durante la semana es el domingo por la maana. En cuanto a la mayora de las iglesias en los EE.UU., es difcil argumentar en contra de esto. En cierto modo, podra parecer ms fcil estar rodeado de personas con ideas afines que comparten antecedentes y experiencias similares. Podra parecer ms fcil no tener que molestarse con otro idioma o ser culturalmente sensible.

No estoy seguro de si algunos de ustedes comparten estas cuestiones conmigo o no. La verdad es que estas preguntas no se quedan demasiado tiempo para m porque, en muchos sentidos, ustedes como una congregacin viven la buena nueva que escuchamos esta maana. En muchos sentidos, es como una congregacin han encontrado una manera nica para equilibrar la creencia con la accin ... para vivir lo que significa ser un diverso cuerpo de Cristo. Mire a su alrededor. Tenga en cuenta las diferentes lenguas que se hablan aqu. Enumere los diferentes pases representados. Piense acerca de nuestros diferentes niveles educativos y los lugares socio-econmicos. Que su funcin como una congregacin con estas numerosas capas de diversidad sea una clara evidencia, no slo que creis que todos y cada uno de ustedes es una parte importante y fundamental del cuerpo de Cristo, sino que tambin viven en esta buena nueva. Es en esta diversidad que es ms fuerte, porque tiene cuidado para asegurarse de que todo el mundo entiende lo que se dice... porque se toma el tiempo para pensar sobre lo que es importante y culturalmente apropiado para los otros. Te hace ms fuerte en esta diversidad porque en ella, ustedes no pueden dejar de ser ms sensibles a la inclusin de todos. Hermanos y hermanas, espero que ustedes escuchen las palabras de Pablo a los Corintios como palabras para ustedes. Independientemente de cmo usted ha hecho esta iglesia su casa, o cules son los talentos que tiene para ofrecer, usted es una parte importante y fundamental del cuerpo de Cristo. Esto es por lo que es, y los talentos nicos que ofrece aqu, que este cuerpo de Cristo se hace ms fuerte... y gracias a Dios por eso. Amn.
