The Book of Zakat (Kitab Al-Zakat)

IN+R,D- +I,N 6f the fi*e fundamentals of Islam, Zakat o%%u#ies the se%ond #ositioin, the first bein$ #rayer +salat,. 'his word is deri*ed from Zakd, whi%h means it +a #lant, $rew. 'he se%ond deri*ati*e of this word %arries the sense of #urifi%atin, e. $. 2ad aflaha man zakkaha +he is indeed su%%essful who #urified himself,. 'he other word used for zakat both in the 2ur!an and the .adith is sada&a whi%h is deri*ed from sid& +the truth,. 0oth these words are hi$hly meanin$ful. 'he s#endin$ of wealth for the sake of llah #urifies the heart of man of the lo*e of material wealth. 'he man who s#ends it offers that as a humble $ift before the Lord and thus affirms the truth that nothin$ is dearer to him in life than the lo*e of llah and that he is full #re#ared to sa%rifi%e e*erythin$ for .is sake. Se%ondly, zakat is the most effe%ti*e measure to im#ro*e the e%onomi% %ondition of the ha*e-nots. It is not, howe*er, a mere ta(, but a form of worshi# whereby a man %omes %lose to his Lord. 'he Muslims ha*e, therefore, been en5oined to #ay zakat with the same sense of earnestness and de*otion in whi%h the seeker of the Lord obser*es the #rayer. 'he #rimary moti*e of zakat is reli$ious and s#iritual, while the so%ial and e%onomi% as#e%ts are subser*ient to it. Its so%ial si$nifi%an%e is that it awakens in man the sense of brotherhood with less fortunate members of so%iety, and stirs his moral %ons%ien%e to make sa%rifi%e for their sake. From the e%onomi% #oint of *iew it dis%oura$es hoardin$ and %on%entration of wealth and hel#s its steady and %onstant flow from the ri%h to the #oor. It is in fa%t a $ood means of #ro*idin$ #ur%hasin$ #ower to the #oor, for amelioratin$ their hard lot and enablin$ them to stand on their own le$s. It should also be remembered that zakat or sada&a in Islam is not a *oluntary a%t of %harity whi%h a ri%h man $i*es to the #oor out of his own sweet will, but it is an obli$atory a%t whi%h e*ery Muslim is en5oined u#on to #erform if he is sin%ere in his belief in God and the .ereafter. 'hus there is no burden of obli$ation on one who re%ei*es zakat, but a sense of thankfulness and $ratitude on the #art of the $i*er, sin%e he has been enabled by the re%i#ient to dis%har$e his obli$ation that he owes to God and so%iety.

+6 "ro#het,, take sada&a +zakat, out of their #ro#erty-thou wouldst %leanse them and #urify them thereby +2ur!an, i(. 9KA,. nd away from it +the .ell, shall be ke#t the most faithful to duty who $i*es his wealth, #urifyin$ himself +(%ii. 9E9J,. So mu%h is the im#ortan%e of zakat in Islam that it has been mentioned at ei$htytwo #la%es in the 2ur!an in %lose %onne%tion with #rayer. 'he Com#anions of the .oly "ro#het +may #ea%e be u#on him, knew its basi% im#ortan%e in Islam. It is a known fa%t that after the death of the #ostle of llah +may #ea%e he u#on him, when some of the tribes, who belie*ed in the oneness of God and obser*ed #rayer, refused to #ay zakat, the first Cali#h bu 0akr Siddi& + llah be #leased with him,, in an answer to the ad*i%e of .adrat !Umar + llah be #leased with him, to show toleran%e towards su%h #eo#le. said in e(#li%it terms, 0y llah, I would definitely wa$e war a$ainst them who disso%iate #rayer from Zakat. Zakat is #aid on the sur#lus of wealth whi%h is left o*er after the #assa$e of a year. It is thus a #ayment on the a%%umulated wealth. Lea*in$ aside animals and a$ri%ultural yield, zakat is #aid at almost a uniform rate of two and a half L. 'he minimum standard of sur#lus wealth o*er whi%h zakat is %har$ed is known as 8isab. It differs with different kinds of #ro#erty, the most im#ortant bein$ ?KK dirhams or C?9 tolas +nearly ?9 oz., In %ase of sil*er, and ?K mith&als or E9 tolas +nearly A oz., in %ase of $old. 'he nisab of %ash is the same as that of $old and sil*er. s re$ards the #ersons to whom zakat is to be #aid, they ha*e been %learly des%ribed in the .oly 2ur!an7 lms are only for the #oor, the needy, the offi%ials %har$ed with the duty of %olle%tion, those whose hearts are in%lined to truth, the ransomin$ of %a#ti*es, those in debt, in the way of llah, and the wayfarer +i( DK,.

Ibn Umar misunderstood +the 2ur!ani% *erse, )So %ome to your tilth howe*er you will),--may llah for$i*e him. bu8adrah re#orted7 n old man of 'ufawah said to me7 I was a $uest of bu.urayrah at Medina. I did not find any one of the %om#anions of the "ro#het +#ea%eMbeMu#onMhim, more de*oted to worshi# and more hos#itable than bu.urayrah. 6ne day I was with him when he was sittin$ on his bed. .e had a #urse whi%h %ontained #ebbles or kernels. bla%k sla*e$irl of his was sittin$ below. 'he #eo#le ke#t silen%e. .e then turned to the women and said +to them,7 Is there any woman amon$ you who narrates it> 'hey ke#t silen%e. 'hen a $irl fell on one of her knees.
