Letter of motivation

I, Sakhawat Hussain, am a faculty member in the Department of Applied Physics, Electronics and Communication Engineering, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, My career objective is to share knowledge serving as a faculty and to contribute in my field of interest by doing active research. I have keen interest in areas of Optoelectronics, LASER diode and LEDs devices. Thesere fields are emerging as a new dimension in the scientific worldis a strong research activity regarding this field, especially for InGaN-based devices. This InGaN semiconductor is of particular importance since it constitutes the active zone of devices such as blue-ray laser diodes or white LEDs. I find particularly motivating to see that research can have practical applications for everyday life. SoTherefore I wantwould like to take be a part into this questresearch effort and go further in the pratical realizations and the understanding of InGaNbased devices.. I tried to maintain a steady progress in all the important examinations so far. I was admitted in Department of Applied Physics, Electronics and Communication Engineering (APECE) at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh - one of the most prestigious universities in Bangladesh. I kept my effort in gaining knowledge as well as keeping my grades high. As a result, with the tuition fees waived for my whole undergraduate study, I secured 2nd position in my class of 45 students and I was awarded the distinguished 'Dean's Award' by Science faculty (School of Science) of the university. I was also honored with government scholarship for my undergraduate result. Highly motivated with these achievements, I enrolled in masters program in the same university and obtained a M.S degree with 73.33% of marks securing 4th position. In my university studies, among different courses, I started to grow more interest in Optics, Solid State Devices and also in optoelectronics under course title Communication Engineering. I found that I did better in those courses compared to other courses though they were tough fields to study. This has given me confidence and I would like to do my research for my PhD program in this field. The synthesis and characterization of different hetero-structure, based on GaInN semiconductor for laser diode (LD) and light emitting diode (LED), will surely help me to materialize my dream goal of being a researcher in my field of interest. The subject is particularly attractive for me because the objective is to realize devices and this can contribute to practical applications: such as white LEDs for lighting and green emitting laser diodes. To have such objectives is particularly motivating for me. On the other hand, through this subject, I will have access to different aspects of semiconductor physics: crystalline growth, quantum confinement effect in low dimensional nanostructures, device physics, optical amplification in laser structures, etc.The research diversity involved in achieving the low cost, high efficient laser and light emitting diode attracted me to study in this field. The recent research work to achieve high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) white LED from a green- yellow light source and a light converter on one hetero-structured device and also the bottom cladding layer modification for better light confinement for a LASER diode also highly motivated me to do my PhD research in synthesis and characterization of hetero-structure devices. As I have completed my undergraduate and graduate level from the department of Applied Physics, Electronics and Communication Engineering, I have the basic knowledge to understand the operation of the characterizing tool such as Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Photoluminescence (PL) and Electroluminescence (EL) used in this field. Moreover, I have come to know that the research organization called Center for Research on Heteroepitaxy and its Application (CRHEA) under Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), France have all the facilities as well as the hetero-structure synthesizing instruments like Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Phase Deposition (MOCVD), Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) under one roof and there are different research groups currently working with success in this field. I am hopeful that if I get an opportunity to work in the this research group for my

full PhD duration, I can contribute to the development of the research activities and also help the group as well as the research organization in achieving its goal in the long run. I am sure that the facilities and research environment will help me to develop myself as a good researcher. I am confident that the training I will get during the program will help me to develop my research and analytical skills and equip me with the knowledge to pursue my career goals.
