Connect pipe components together by the continuous welding method to form postand-rail assemblies. Conform to CSA W48.1-M, CSA W59-M and CSA-W117.2. Grind welds to a uniformly smooth finish. Touch up damaged galvanizing in the field using zinc rich primer. Execution MEASUREMENTS AND DEVIATIONS Where any parts of the work are specifically located by dimensions on the Drawings, check and verify these dimensions on site prior to installation. Examine work of other Trades or Contractors prior to commencement of fire protection installations. Report in writing to the Engineer any discrepancies on the part of other Trades or Contractors which will affect the fire protection installations. Failure to report discrepancies shall be considered acceptance of the conditions. Where site conditions require minor deviations from indicated arrangements or locations, make such changes on approval of the Engineer without additional cost to the Employer. Should any discrepancies occur during installation of the work which will necessitate major revisions, inform Engineer immediately and secure his authorization in writing before proceeding with the work. INSTALLATION OF PIPING

3.2 .1 .2

Conform with applicable requirements of NFPA 24. Lay pipe in true alignment and to design elevations. Make joints in strict accordance with the manufacturer's printed instructions, and carefully bed fittings, hubs, or couplings to ensure constant support of the entire length of pipe. Lay piping in clean dry trenches, take particular care to prevent twigs, stones, or other foreign matter from entering the pipe. Cap or plug open end of pipe at times during which work is not in progress and remove any water, muck, or debris accumulating during periods of temporary cessation of work, prior to the resumption of pipe laying. Anchor 45 degree elbows, 90 degree elbows, and tees in piping, and hydrants with mechanical joint connections, with tie rods and thrust blocks. Install tie rods, clamps, bolts, nut, and washers of approved size and type, in a prescribed manner, utilizing tie rod lugs on the fittings, and with clamps shouldered against fittings or pipe hubs. Where tie rods are required on spigot ends of pipe, install clamp not less than 300 mm from the joint. Coat tie rods, clamps, bolts, and washers with a bitumastic compound after installation, to prevent corrosion. Clean buried parts of post indicator valves, valves and hydrants and coat with same compound. Place thrust blocks of 20 MPa concrete at all bend and tee fittings in piping. Poured in place concrete to provide a bearing face area against undisturbed soil of the trench wall, in accordance with requirements of NFPA 24. Pour concrete in such a way that all connections are capable of being removed for servicing. Do not pour against nuts, bolts or across flanges.

Set hydrants on 450 mm square concrete base, 200 mm thick, with 0.75 cu.m of coarse gravel placed around and beneath for drainage. Take precautions not to obstruct drainage holes in base of hydrant. Install gate valve and valve box adjacent to each hydrant. Adjust valve box to finished grade. Install diaper and pour mortar around all assembled joints of concrete pressure pipe in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. Provide pipe manufacturersupplied restrained joints. TRACER WIRE

3.3 .1

Along full length of all buried plastic fire mains, install tracer wire and bring to surface at each termination point valve box, and post indicator, with 900 mm of extra length of coiled wire. Attach tracer wire to pipe with plastic electrical tape. Outside building walls, leave sufficient wire to extend wire to building wall and grade, plus 900 mm of extra length of wire. VALVE CHAMBER

3.4 .1 .2

Construct valve chamber in accordance with details indicated, plumb and true to alignment and grade. Install valves, fittings, pipe and ancillary items in valve chamber in accordance with details on Drawings and as specified in Piping Standard 007SW.

******SPEC NOTE: THE FOLLOWING SHADED TEXT IS JOB SPECIFIC AND IS ADDED TO THIS MASTER SECTION AS GUIDE SPEC ON PROJECTS WITH SIMILAR WORKS ARE TO BE PERFORMED. 3.5 BUMPER POSTS AND RAILS .1 .2 Auger for, and install posts and rail assemblies for all PIV's and hydrants. Form top 100 mm of foundations with "Sonotube" forms. Pour concrete foundations. Fill posts with rampacked concrete. Form top of fill to a crowned smooth finish.

USE THE FOLLOWING FOR HOT DIPPED GALVANIZED STEEL. .3 Wash pipe free of grime and dirt. Let dry. Apply a tie coat of epoxy. Within 48 hours of tie coat application, apply 2 coats of topcoat. Take notice that topcoat must be applied within 48 hours otherwise topcoat will not adhere properly. Apply tie coat/topcoat in a continuous 2-stage operation, i.e. if rain is forecast within 48 hours of tie coat application, postpone such tie coat application. .4 3.6 .1 Wash pipe free of grime and dirt. Let dry. Apply 2 coats of paint to a dry film thickness of 38 - 50.8. FLUSHING OF PIPING Flush piping at a flow rate to conform with requirements of NFPA 24, before connection is made to existing main. Flush sections of line, if necessary, to suit installation procedures. STERILIZATION OF PIPING .1 After flushing of piping is completed, perform 24 hour sterilization treatment of the system, by treating the water with 50 parts of chlorine per million as recommended in AWWA C-651. Flush system to remove chlorine content to an acceptable level. TESTING Architects & Engineers
