Prerequisite: Familiarity with the material covered in math 126 is assumed. Textbook: Essential Calculus - First Edition, by James Stewart. Even though the second edition came out recently, we will continue to use the rst edition so that students continuing with the sequence do not have to purchase a new text. It really does not matter which edition of the text you use as long as you are doing the correct homework problems. Course Outline: The following outline is only intended to be a rough guide and the material covered might be altered slightly as the course progresses. Grading: Your grade will be calculated as follows: 20% Homework Grade (the n lowest scores will be dropped, where n is dened below), 20% Midterm One, 20% Midterm Two, 40% Final Examinations: There will be two midterms held during class on Wednesday, February 27th and on Wednesday, April 10th. A common nal exam will be held on Wednesday, May 15th from 11 AM - 1 PM. The locations will be announced at a later date. No makeup exams will be given. Requests to reschedule midterms must be made two weeks in advance of the exam date. Any grading complaints must be submitted within two weeks of the exam date. Homework Grade - Weekly Written Assignments and Discussion Quizzes: Weekly written assignments will be collected in your Thursday discussion section starting in the second week.

There will be n quizzes administered during discussion sections throughout the quarter and these are meant to incentivize attendance without penalizing those students who do not need to attend. Your homework assignment scores will consist both of your weekly written assignment scores and your discussion quiz scores. At the end of the semester the n lowest homework assignment scores will be dropped. So, for instance, if three discussion quizzes are administered throughout the semester, then the three lowest homework assignment scores will be dropped. In this scenario, suppose that student A always turns in perfect weekly written assignments, but does not take any of the discussion quizzes. Suppose also that student B has perfect scores on all but three of the weekly written assignments and scores perfectly on three discussion quizzes. Then both students A and B will have perfect homework grades at the end of the semester. No late homeworks will be accepted and no makeup quizzes will be administered. Extra Help: Please feel free to ask as many questions about the course as you want and also to make suggestions. In general, the more that people are voicing their concerns, the happier I am. The Math Center in KAP 263 is attended by faculty and graduate students and it is a good resource for extra homework help. VARC tutoring services are also available for this course - visit http://viterbi.usc.edu/students/undergrad/varc/peer-tutoring/courses.htm for details.
