Some important Do's/Donts for end users of Plain Detonator: Do Use a sharp knife for cutting the safety fuse squarely. Ragged ends may cause difficulty in insertion. Ensure that the end of Safety Fuse is free of any oil/ moisture / grease contamination. Ensure the crimping of Safety Fuse is near the open end of Detonator. Ensure use of a bench crimper when large numbers of Detonators are used. This will ensure a uniform and safer crimp to handle. Ensure the safe burning speed of Safety Fuse for a safe blast. Use a fuse lighter or plastic ignition cord for lighting the Safety Fuse. Ensure adequate length of Safety Fuse to allow sufficient time for withdrawal to safety. Use waterproofing compound on the junction of Safety Fuse and Detonator

when used in wet condition. This will ensure prevention of moisture creeping into detonator and causing a possible misfire. Don't Do not force or screw the Safety Fuse into the Detonator. Avoid the use of fuse, which can be inserted with difficulty. Avoid tight crimping as they may lead to misfires. Do not allow naked lights or smoking in the vicinity of Detonators. Avoid use of any other means except standard recommended Crimpers

Instantaneous Electric Detonators Instantaneous Electric Detonators offers a reliable means of controlled, simultaneous initiation of explosive charge. Instantaneous Electric Detonators are manufactured in No.6 and No.8 strength in aluminium shells and in No.6 strength in copper coated steel shells. The shells are fitted with electrical fuseheads. Precise consistency of the unique design of the fusehead is maintained by a fully automated process. PVC extruded leg wires are sleeved through a PVC plug and crimped to the Detonator to ensure protection against moisture and water. The leg wires are waterproof, ruggedly abrasion resistant, easy to strip and handle. The bare ends of the leg wires are shunted for protection against stray currents. Applications Instantaneous Electric Detonators in aluminium shell have wide range of applications in quarrying, opencast and underground non-gassy mine while copper coated steel shells have use in underground gassy mines Delay Detonators Delay Detonators are generally available in three categories - Long Delay, Short Delay and Coal Delay (Permissible Electric Detonator). Long Delay and Short Delay Detonators consist of an aluminium tube filled with ASA and PETN as primary and secondary charges, while Coal Delay Detonators consist of a copper coated steel shell carrying similar charges. Judicious usage of delay detonators achieve good fragmentation with controlled throw enabling easy mechanical loading and providing greater control of vibration, noise and flyrock. They can be used in dry and wet conditions. Seismic Detonators Seismic Instantaneous Electric Detonators are supplied in No.8 strength with 23 SWG tinned copper lead wires. Seismic Instantaneous Electric Detonators consist of an aluminium tube closed at one end and to the other end are attached the lead wires. These detonators have a specially developed fusehead designed to go off within one millisecond of the current application. A special anti-static sleeve protects the fusehead. Seismic Instantaneous Electric Detonators, being fast action detonators, are capable of withstanding high hydrostatic pressure; meets the critical needs for seismic prospecting

and therefore is specially developed for seismic exploration on land or offshore. Specifications

Cord Relays
Cord Relay is a non-electric surface delay initiator and provides delay between the holes and the rows in detonating cord initiated blasts. The delay is accomplished by cutting the detonating cord and attaching the cord relay to the cut ends. Cord Relays manufactured by IDL are available in 17, 25, 42, 50 and 100 MS delay intervals and are bi-directional in use. Specification Cord Relay consists of two delay devices housed in a plastic component. Two holes are provided at either ends for threading the detonating cord. All nominals of Cord Relay are in Natural white plastic components with nominal time indicated in different colours Advantage of using Cord Relays
Safe Misfire Free Simple Accurate Cord Relays are non-electric and thus are immune to extraneous electricity sources such as stray currents, static electricity and radio frequency (RF) energies. Use of tie-lines in the surface hook-up provides two or three detonation paths thus minimising risk of misfire. Cord Relays are bi-directional in usage and very simple to use. Cord Relays are accurate. They get initiated sequentially and thus eliminate the problem of overlap prevalent in delay detonator.

Unlimited

Firing of infinite number of holes possible. Provides an unlimited number of delays allowing large blasts to be conducted. Use of a combination of Cord Relays of different timings allows large blasts to be carried out with minimum ground vibrations. Firing of one hole at a time is possible, where required.

Less Vibrations

Operation Aids Lay the detonating cord trunk line with a minimum of slack between holes. Cut the trunkline at the point where Cord Relay is to be hooked. Pass one cut end of detonating cord through hole provided in the plastic housing and make loop as shown in sketch. Cut ends of detonating cords should be kept dry. Locate/Position Cord Relays close to the borehole to be delayed. Where individual holes are fired in sequence, use of two cord relays in parallel is recommended. In multi-row blasting using cord relay, detonating cord cross-ties or safety lines should be provided as an insurance against possible risk of misfires due to cut-offs. Where parallel or safety line is to be provided, the loose ends of detonating cord must be kept apart to avoid flash-overs.

Precautions

Application of Cord Relays Cord Relays can be used for providing various delay initiation patterns such as Row delay, Diagonal pattern, V-Pattern etc. Where controlled blasting is required, Cord Relays can be used in such a manner that only one hole blasts at a time thus keeping the maximum charge per delay While Blasting With Cord Relays Always use closed loop/tie-lines, while carrying out blasts with Cord Relays. For Diagonal or V -Patterns, Tie-lines must be connected in such a way that: o Two or three detonation paths are available for hole/holes being blasted. o The previously intended delay sequence is not altered viz. Firing time of hole (or set of holes) should be same from either direction. o In Row delay blasting, closed loop must be formed. Also where rows are very long, additional cross ties must be put (one for 35 - 40 metres of trunkline) to eliminate effect of long detonation path.

Detonating Cord - Plastic Coated

Detonating Cords assure reliable non-electric blasting. The cords manufactured have core-loads of 3.6 gms, 6.0 gms, 10.0 gms 20 gms and 40.0 PETN charge per meter. On special request cords with 80 gms PETN per meter can be manufactured. Detonating cord is a flexible cord containing a uniform core load of PETN that ensures positive initiation of cap-sensitive explosives along the entire length of the fuse. The high explosive core is encased in various protective coverings developed to withstand physical abuses and exposure to extreme temperatures. The detonating cord is relatively insensitive to detonation by friction, shock or electric discharge and requires proper initiation for detonation. Specifications (Source IDL)

Detonating Cord - Textile Braided

Detonating Cord (textile braided) consists of a continuous core which is bound in a plastic sheath together with synthetic textile yarns to provide higher tensile strength, abrasion resistance and knot tying capabilities. The cords withstand suddenly applied loads due to their tensile strength and ability to stretch. In other words even under severe conditions of rock movement or product loading they will reliably detonate. The cords are manufactured with PETN core-loads of 3.5 gms/mtr, 5.0 gms/mtr and 10 .gms/mtr. Application All varieties of detonating cords (textile braided) can be used for either downline or surface application since they provide a safe, quick and reliable system of initiating high explosives and blasting agents. Raydets (IDL nonel)

Raydets are non-electric initiating device, which combine the versatility and advantages of electric detonators and detonating cord. Raydet consists of a plastic tube carrying a very small quantity of reactive material on its inner surface. A No.8 strength instantaneous or delay detonator is crimped to one end of the ray tube. When initiated a low order shock wave with a velocity of 2000 mtrs/sec travels through the tube and reliably initiates the detonator. Raydets are reliably initiated by a detonator or detonating cord. Raydets are designed for providing optimum blasting in terms of: Sequential Firing Optimum Fragmentation Reliability Avoidance of Ground Movement / Cut-offs Maximum Safety

The unique features of Raydets are: The shock tube (Raytube) is made of special co-polymer that can withstand high temperature variation Reactive material used is a highly reliable composition Highly moisture resistant Shock tubes have low order memory Simple and user friendly as hook-up connections are less cumbersome and time saving

Application Raydet are designed for use in large hole stoping, ring hole blasting, tunneling, blasting in highly conductive ore bodies, surface and trenching and other underground blasting operations, but not where methane or coal dust occur. Products The products offered for above mentioned blasting operations are: Raydet HS 0 to 12 (13 periods in half second series) Raydet MS 0 to 20 (21 periods in millisecond series) Specification Raydet HS/MS specifications are as:
Shell Strength Shell Diameter Shell Length Aluminium No. 8 7.2 mm (a) Instantaneous: 47 mm (b) Delays: 77 mm

Identification (a) The delay nos are identified on the product as: For half second series: - Tags with delay number in BLUE. For millisecond series: - Tags with delay number in RED. (b) The tube lengths are indicated by binding tags attached to the coil with the length printed in Blue for half second series and in Red for millisecond series.

Usage Initiation of Raydets is carried out with Detonating Cord or Raydet TLD. The oval plastic

yellow connector provided with each Raydet facilitates the hook-up of each detonator to the detonating cord trunkline. Raydets are also initiated by bunch blasting of upto 10 Raydet tubes using a wrap of detonating cord. Advantages Raydet, being a non-electric system, is immune to stray currents, static electricity and Radio Frequency (RF) energies. Raydets eliminate the risk of misfire associated with electric detonators due to earth leakage in highly conductive ore bodies. Raydets can be safely used with pneumatically loaded ANFO, where there is a hazard of static charge being developed during loading. Raytube is insensitive to accidental initiation by impact, shock, friction and fire. Raydet provides accurate down the hole delay and in surface blasting provide true bottom priming. Raydet provides large number of sequential delays in combination with surface delays. Multideck initiation on different delays possible when needed. Bunch firing of Raydets possible enabling hook-up making less cumbersome and time saving. Raydet does not desensitize non-capsensitive explosives in the drill hole and thus ensures full energy release unlike Det cord. Raydet does not cause ejection of stemming or cratering effects commonly associated with detonating cord. This results in improved fragmentation, throw and reduced air blast noise due to better confinement. Bottom hole initiation reduce generation of flyrock from the bench top due to cratering effects. Avoids side initiation of explosive column. Do not cut factory sealed end of Raydet tube. Do not connect two Raytubes. One Raytube will not initiate another. Where bunch firing of Raydets is adopted, do not connect more than 10 tubes in a bunch. Use the oval plastic connectors provided on the Raytube for hook up of Raydets onto Detonating Cord. Do not use tape. Storage temperature should not exceed 60 degrees Celsius.

Precautions during Use:

Raydet DTH (Down The Hole)

Raydet DTH has been specially developed for providing accurate down the hole delay. The Raydet DTH System consists of a coil of tube crimped to a delay detonator. Each

Raydet DTH is provided with a plastic oval connector at the free end to facilitate hook-up with detonating cord surface trunk line. The free end of the Raydet DTH coming from the drill hole can also be hooked up to a Raydet TLD on surface where required. Raydet DTH are available in nominal time of 225 ms, 450 ms, 475 ms and 500 ms. The nominal time is identified by tags attached to the Raytube indicating the delay time. Binding tags attached to the coil indicate tube length. Advantages of Raydet DTH: Permits bottom point initiation Inter-row timing Air blast suppression Ground vibration control Toe initiation resulting in greater muck pile heave Eliminates use of detonating cord down line thereby ensuring that the stemming is not damaged/ ejected No desensitization of column charge resulting in higher explosive efficiency Avoid side initiation of explosive column. Can be conveniently used in conjunction with boosters in holes charges with noncap sensitive explosives Provides accurate delay down the hole Provides protection against down the hole and surface cut-offs Select the required delay period which will be common to all the drill holes in the blast. Lower the Raydet DTH/primer assembly to the bottom of the drill hole. If detonating cord is used on surface then hook-up the Raydet DTH to cord by means of the oval connector provided with each Raydet DTH. If Raydet TLD is used on surface then hook-up the free end of the Raytube to the TLD by means of the bunch connector provided to each Raydet TLD. Connect all the Raydet DTH to the surface system and ensure all connections are proper.

Usage of Raydet DTH

Raydet TLD (Trunk Line Delay)

Raydet TLD has been specifically developed for use in surface blasting. Raydet TLD consists of a coil of Raytube crimped to a Raydet delay cap housed in a special plastic casing known as "Bunch Connector". The factory assembled connector enables connections to be given to 6 Raytubes coming from either down-hole or surface. Raydet TLD are available in nominal time or instantaneous, 17 ms, 25 ms, 42 ms, 50 ms, 65 ms. The nominal time of Raydet TLD are identified by tags attached to the coil and by

the colour code of the Bunch Connector. The colour codes are as follows: Raydet TLD Raydet TLD Raydet TLD Raydet TLD Raydet TLD Raydet TLD Instantaneous 17 ms 25 ms 42 ms 50 ms 65 ms Green Yellow Red White White Blue

Advantages of Raydet TLD Eliminates usage of detonating cord/ detonating relay on surface. Noiseless system as the shock wave is confined within the Raytube. Used as surface delays between rows or drill holes. Provides an unlimited number of delays particularly helpful in big blasts. Provides accurate delay per hole thereby improving fragmentation and overall blast results. User friendly, as hook-up making is simple and less cumbersome. Lay the Raydet TLD on the surface close to the collar of the drill hole. Insert the free end of the Raydet tube of the Raydet/Raydet DTH from the drill hole into the bunch connector of the Raydet TLD. Pull the inserted Raytube through the groove and make a knot. Alternatively if the number of adjacent bore holes to be hooked up are only 1 to 2 the hook-up can be made by inserting the free end of the Raytube from the drill hole through a groove of the bunch connector and instead of making a knot reinsert back the free end into adjacent groove and pull the free end thereby making a loop. Complete all connections using either the knot or loop method. Select the required delays between the rows and make the necessary connections. Check to ensure that all the connections are proper and in order. Typical blast patterns using Raydets TLD are diagonal/V-Pattern.
