Water Purification System

Overview
Nearly 4 M people die each year from water related diseases One in eight people lack access to clean water supplies Need for water sanitation has become a global crisis In the Philippines, access to clean and safe drinking water remains a problem, particularly in the rural areas

Common waterborne diseases

diarrhea/dysentery cholera typhoid fever infectious hepatitis vomiting

Conventional Water Treatment Process

Sedimentation Filtration Disinfection Safer Water Storage
Safe Water Storage

Ceramic water filtration

Popular method of treating contaminated water System consists of a porous ceramics and a receptacle/container Water is poured into the upper portion of the receptacle or directly into the porous ceramics, where gravity pulls the water through the pores in the ceramics and into the lower portion of the receptacle/container where the filtered water is safely stored Several types

Micro-organism (bacteria) and particulates are common contaminants present in tap and ground waters Contaminants cause the spread of water-borne diseases Micro-filtration, e.g., ceramic-based micro-filters (0.1 50 um) is a proven technique to take out such contaminants ITDI-DOST can provide an innovative solution in ceramic filtration to take out microbial/particulate contaminants in drinking water for use in household level

Develop pot type ceramic filter with nano antimicrobial coating Utilizes indigenous raw materials: red clay

Ceramic Filter Model

Ceramic Pot Filter 6L capacity
Ceramic Pot Filter 1.5L capacity

Filter Assembly
Operation
Water from source is poured into the ceramic pot. The water slowly passes through the pores and is collected in the lower container. The filtered water is stored in the container until needed, protecting it from contamination. The user simple opens the tap at the base of the container when they need water.

Micro-Filtration Performance Test

Type of Test Microbiological Quality (raw water vs filtered water) Test Process:
Ceramic Pot Filters were distributed among selected households in the NHA housing in Muntinlupa. Water from NHA deep well system was used as test sample and fed into the ceramic pot filters Filtered water samples were gathered from subject households and tested for microbial quality alongside unfiltered water from the same deep well system

Comments/Feedbacks
Medyo mabigat Nagagamit sa pagluluto Kailangan maingat sa paglinis Masarap and lasa ng tubig Maayos walang problema Nakatipid sa pagbili ng mineral water Sa unang pagagamit, may amoy ang tubig

XU Ecoville Lumbia Transition Shelter Brgy Poblacion , Lumbia , CDO

Calaanan1 Tent City PN Roa Subdivision, Calaanan, CDO

Comments/Feedbacks
At Calaanan 1, the filter was used by at least 25 families All were happy and satisfied with the ITDI filter because they dont need to buy icewater or commercial clean cold water for drinking There was no reported/observed adverse effect on the health of the users At XU Ecoville Lumbia Transition Shelter, they only observed a clay-smell
