Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Isaiah 62:1-5, 1 Corinthians 12:1-11, John 2:1-11 January 20, 2013 2 Epiphany In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Every once and a while there is an obvious connection between everyday life and the scripture readings for the week, and it seems that today is one of those times. There is an obvious connection between the reading from 1 Corinthians and whats currently happening in the life of the church. As many of you know, last week we held our annual congregational meeting. During thatmeeting we made several decisions, heard reports from the council, recognized the faithful service of Tomas and Juana, elected new church council members and committee coordinators, and appointed a pastoral search team. Today we will commission our newly electedleaders,and ask that the Spirit is once again present and active in guiding the congregation.Commissioningis important because it is an act of blessing and empowermentfor the people you have elected. I mentioned that there is an obvious connection between the reading from 1 Corinthians and what is currently happening in the life of this church. Today we hear a Who, what, where, when, why and howtype of list, aboututilizing the gifts of the Spirit. Itsimportant to remember on days like these. Who uses these gifts of the Spirit? All those who proclaim Gods abundant love through Christ.What are these spiritual gifts?Wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, discernment, speaking in tongues, and the interpretation of tongues.Its important to understand that these are not the only gifts of the Spirit. Theres also teaching, patience, love, and the list goes on.Where and when do we put these gifts to use? In our daily lives, or any time we speak aboutor respond to Gods life-giving love for us. How should we use these gifts? The answer to this one is key. We should use these gifts for the common good of the communities in which we live. We should use

these gifts in ways that seek to build up these communities.

And finally, why do we use these gifts that the Spirit has given us? Becauseusing them in the communities in which we liveis one way we can respond to Gods gracious love for usbecause in using them,our communities and this community of faith is built up, regardless of which particulargifts you offer. Brothers and Sisters, some of us might think that the people elected last week at our congregational meeting hold special kinds of spiritual gifts. And while they have certainly been given particular responsibilities in the church, the truth is the Good News is that the Spirit has given all of us gifts that support the common good of the community. The Spirit has given us gifts that are capable of building up the community. Its simply a matter of figuring out how to use them. As we move forward with this commissioning,ask yourselves, How is the Spirit is moving within me to work for the common good of this community? How is the Spirit moving within me to build up the communities in which I live and participate?Take the time to really think about it, because your leaders need your participation, your input, and your feedback, not just today, but in the weeks and months to comeso that we all might come together and use our Spiritual gifts to build up this community of faith for Gods glory. De vez en cuando hay una conexin obvia entre la vida cotidiana y las lecturas bblicas de la semana, y parece que hoy es uno de esos momentos. Hay una conexin obvia entre la lectura primera de Corintios y lo que est ocurriendo actualmente en la vida de la iglesia. Como muchos de ustedes saben, la semana pasada tuvimos nuestra reunin anual de la congregacin. En esa reunin se tomaron decisiones diferentes, escuchamos los informes del Consejo, se reconoci el fiel servicio de Toms y Juana, elegimos nuevos miembros del consejo de la iglesia y a los coordinadores de los comits, y se nombr a un equipo de bsqueda pastoral. Hoy vamos a encargar a nuestros lderes recin elegidos, y pedir que el Espritu este una vez ms presente y activo en la orientacin de la congregacin. Puesta en marcha es importante porque es un acto de bendicin y el empoderamiento de las personas que hemos elegido. He mencionado que hay una conexin obvia entre la lectura primera de Corintios y lo que est sucediendo en la vida de esta iglesia. Hoy escuchamos un "Quin, qu, dnde, cundo, por qu y cmo" en tipo de lista, sobre la utilizacin de los dones del Espritu. Es importante recordar que en das como estos. Quin utiliza estos dones del Espritu? Todos aquellos que proclaman el amor abundante de Dios a travs de Cristo. Cules son estos dones espirituales? La sabidura, el conocimiento, la fe, la curacin, poderes milagrosos, profeca, discernimiento, hablar en lenguas, y la interpretacin de lenguas. Es importante entender que estos no son los nicos dones del Espritu. Tambin existe la enseanza, la paciencia, el amor y la lista continua. Dnde y cundo ponemos estos dones en uso? En nuestras vidas diarias, o en cualquier momento hablamos o respondemos a los que dan vida al amor de Dios por nosotros. Cmo debemos usar estos dones? La respuesta a esta pregunta es la clave. Deberamos usar estos dones para el bien comn de las comunidades en las que vivimos. Deberamos utilizar estos dones en la forma de tratar de construir estas comunidades.

Y por ltimo, por qu utilizamos estos dones que el Espritu nos ha dado? Porque usndolos en las comunidades en las que vivimos es una manera de que podamos responder al amor misericordioso de Dios por nosotros... porque al usarlos, nuestras comunidades y esta comunidad de fe se construyen, independientemente de que dones particulares usted ofrece. Hermanos y hermanas, algunos de nosotros podramos pensar que las personas elegidas la semana pasada en la reunin congregacional mantienen un tipo especial de dones espirituales. Y aunque ciertamente ellos han dado responsabilidades particulares en la Iglesia, la verdad es... La buena nuevaes... que el Espritu nos ha dado a todos nosotros los dones que apoyan el bien comn de la comunidad. El Espritu nos ha dado dones que son capaces de construir la comunidad. Es simplemente una cuestin de encontrar la manera de usarlos. A medida que avanzamos con esta puesta en marcha, pregntense a s mismos: "Cmo se mueve el Espritu dentro de m para trabajar por el bien comn de la comunidad?" "Cmo se mueve el Espritu dentro de m para construir las comunidades en las que vivo y participo? "Tmese el tiempo para realmente pensar en ello, porque sus lderes necesitan su participacin, su entrada y su retroalimentacin, no slo hoy, sino en las semanas y meses por venir... a fin de que todos podamos unirnos y usar nuestros dones espirituales para construir esta comunidad de fe para la gloria de Dios. Amen.
